A housing professional who is equipped with key skills and expert knowledge with an accredited qualification from CIH, will drive improvement and add value enabling the organisation to perform and compete more effectively. 1.1 What is the Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession? The Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession will provide you with a structured introduction to all essential aspects of housing strategy, policy and theory. The course focuses on the following 6 subject areas: Housing need, supply and demand Housing policy Managing people Housing economics and finance Housing management services Housing law The learning outcomes and professional skills gained for each area are shown below: Learning outcomes Housing need, demand and supply 1. Understand the demographic profile of the UK and its impact on housing need and housing demand 2. Understand the relationship between the demand for and supply of housing in the UK across all tenures 3. Understand the range of factors that influence local housing market strategies Housing policy Understand how policy is made and implemented. Explain the difference between policy, legislation, regulation, guidance and incentives Know the organisations and agencies that influence and shape housing policy Understand the historical development of national housing policy and how policy impacts on practice Managing people Understand a range of human resource practices in housing organisations and identify good practice examples Know how to manage a team, understand the importance of teamwork and conflict resolution Know how to manage change 4. Manage and develop housing rent services Housing law An understanding of the legal system in relation to housing Monitor and respond to the potential for legal proceedings The Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession can be completed in one year. 1.2 How will this course benefit me and my organisation? Gaining a qualification is a great way to develop your career prospects. Qualifications at this level will enable you to be an effective housing practitioner and will provide you with a deeper understanding of how your organisation and others in the housing industry work. Successful completion of this course will serve as a foundation for students who wish to study for the CIH Professional Qualification via the postgraduate route for graduates or via the undergraduate route for non graduates. The Professional Qualification provides access to chartered membership of CIH.

4 4 1.3 What are the entry requirements? You should have completed the Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice or equivalent OR You should have two A levels of grade C or above You should hold a non-cognate degree (UK Honours or equivalent), such as history or science. You should be working in housing or in a related field at the time of applying OR You should hold an HNC/HND in a relevant subject and be working in housing or in a related field at the time of applying You will be asked to send evidence of your qualifications You may be admitted without the normal entry requirements or formal educational qualifications but you will need to produce evidence of your experience in the housing industry and the study skills necessary for the course. We recommend that you have more than five years experience at manager or senior level in a range of settings. 1.4 What will I gain? Successful completion of the Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession will provide you with the foundation to enable you to study for the CIH Professional Qualification. Graduate students passing the Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession can then progress onto the MSc Housing Studies. Successful non-graduate students will be able to progress onto the Professional Diploma in Housing and Sustainable Communities course (PDHSC). The completion of this course provides access to CIH chartered membership. 1.5 What can I expect as a CIH student? As an online learning student, CIH will support you every step of the way. At the beginning of the programme, during the online induction session, you will be provided with a brief introduction to the course and information on how it is delivered, structured and assessed. You will also be advised of the support you will receive from the CIH teams. The CIH learning team will offer guidance if personal or work-related problems arise which may affect your studies. Our new, improved online learning service, to be launched for the Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession from March 2014, will also feature: Updated content and a revised range of modules which build on our excellent study materials and will provide students with the knowledge and understanding they need to do their jobs brilliantly Increased support for students, including a more proactive and supportive model of tutoring, regular study skills sessions and resources and the opportunity to share experiences with other students
