1 Veterans/Ex Naval Men & Women s Navy Base Open Day Information and points of interest: Friday, 22 January The Naval Base Veteran s Day will be held on Friday 22 nd January 2016 between 0830 and There have been some comments regarding the lack of response to registrations. Please be assured if you have registered then that means you are confirmed as attending and welcome to be a part of this day. Whilst we do not have a maximum limit of how many can attend, in order to plan this day we need to know how many will be arriving and we certainly don t want to run out of food!! If you have any concerns please feel free to Trevor Smith trevor.smith2@nzdf.mil.nz and please don t forget the 2 in Trevor s as I suspect this could be a reason why some registrations may not have been received. Alternatively you can call on For base security and access all visitors will be required to bring photo ID. Those under 16 will not require ID. 3. All visitors are requested to wear suitable enclosed footwear e.g. no jandals or strapless sandals. 4. All visitors attending the Powhiri are requested to arrive at the Ngataringa Bay Sports fields between 0800 and 0815 where IDs will be checked and Name cards issued. Car parking attendants will direct where vehicles are to park. 5. For those who are unable to attend the Powhiri you are requested to arrive no later than 9.30am at the Ngataringa Bay Sports Fields for registration check and name card issue. All visitors will then be escorted onto the Base via the North Yard Gate in preparation for the Change of Command Ceremony Please Note: Only those who have attended the powhiri, or have been previously welcomed onto the Marae will be able to visit the Marae throughout the day 6. The only access to the Naval Base will be via the North Yard Gate off Jim Titchener Parade, If you intend to arrive Devonport via the Ferry from Auckland City we will organise a shuttle service to run from the Devonport ferry terminal to Ngataringa Bay Sports field 8am 8.25am and 9am 9.25am (if this is you intention let us know so we can work timings to ensure you are uplifted in time) 7. On completion of the Change of Command Ceremony the plan for the day is to allow you all to move around the base and visit the areas that interest you at the speed that suits you. We will have shuttle vans that will move between the North and South Yards, the Sea Safety Training Squadron (or DC School), the Seamanship Training Aid and the Museum and you can hop on and off at your leisure we are looking at the vans departing for venues approximately every 15 minutes or so.

2 You will be able to walk freely around the base and out to the wharves to the ships that will be open for viewing. There are some areas that will hold demonstrations at prescribed times so check out the programme below and you decide what you would like to attend. Areas of interest include: a. The Recruit Training Squadron (RTS), formerly the New Entry School, b. Witness the Change of Command Ceremony for our Deputy Chief of Navy and Maritime Component Commander, c. The Sea Safety Training Squadron (SSTS), formerly the Damage Control School, d. The Fleet Gym (for a Multi Stage Fitness Testing (MSFT) display)) and Drillshed (for small arms display), e. The Bridge Simulator, (for Officer of the Watch, Operations Branch/Comms training & flag-hoist demonstrations) f. The Littoral Warfare Unit (LWU) which includes the Maritime Survey, Mine Counter Measures and the Operational Dive Teams, g. Ships Open to Visitors include Canterbury, Wellington, Otago, and an Inshore Patrol Vessel (IPV), Te Mana will also present an engineering display h. There will be a bus service to take visitors to the Navy Museum situated at the very end of King Edward Parade, however the Navy Museum is open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm, i. There will be static displays of a Seasprite Helicopter (replacement of the Wasp) and a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) the navy s newest boats addition. Please note that operational taskings may determine if the Sea sprite is available for the day. j. The Defence Force Recruiting Bus will be on display in the Monowai Hill carpark, k. There will be entertainment given by the Navy Band and the Navy Pipes & Drums, l. A buffet lunch will be provided for all visitors between 1130 and 1330 situated at the Vince McGlone Galley. (Philomel s new Dining Hall), m. A Navy Haka performed by Navy personnel on the North Yard Parade Ground at 1430.

As this is a normal working day for navy personnel and civilian contractors, there will be some areas out of bounds to visitors and this is mainly the western or dockyard end of the Naval Base. 9. Booklets that outline the programme and contain general information regarding the Navy will be handed out on arrival to the Naval Base. 10. At the end of the day on completion of the base day people can get the shuttle service back to the North Yard/Ngataringa Bay or you may wish to walk to collect your vehicles. 11. Please be aware that with nearly 500 visitors expected there will be a bit of congestion at certain times during the day; for example at the start of the day getting everyone their name cards, moving everyone onto base and then getting everyone back to their vehicles at the end of the day. Additionally lunchtime may prove challenging as the Galley can only seat approx. 280 people that is why lunch is over a two hour period so some can have lunch early and others can come through a little later. 12. Along the Waterfront their will be shaded areas where you can take a rest in a and view the harbour and with it being mid January it is recommended you come prepared with water bottles and sunscreen. St Johns will be available on base should anyone require any medical attention. 13. Hopefully we have covered everything and if anything changes or we need to get you additional information we will do that prior to 18 th December or in the first week back at work which is the week of 11 th Jan We hope that you all enjoy this day and that it will be a great success and you catch up with many friends 15.
