2004 Shaler Area Varsity Girls Softball The 2004 Shaler Area Varsity Girls Softball Team entered the WPIAL playoffs with the adversity of being a 5 th seed. As the games became more important, however, the Lady Titans improved their play and transformed themselves into a state championship winning team. The team s overall record was 17-5, including a 6-1 record in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs. The girls captured the state championship by defeating Chambersburg 3-2. This special team s motto was Extreme, and the girls lived it not only on the field, but in their closeness as best friends. Members of the team include: Back Row: Paul Holzshu, Bill Suit, Skip Palmer, Kim Valeriano, Tom Haser, Bill Couts Middle Row: Amanda Knaus, Megan Lynch, Jen Simile, Kaitlyn Kline, Julie Stampfle, Jen Popinski, Brittany Morgan, Laura Litwin, Melissa McQuade, Rich Massucci Front Row: Angela Mastrean, Ashley Scanga, Nataly Valeriano, Lia Source, Amber King, Kristen Lynch, Niki DeRenzo

Curtis Hetz Shaler Area Class of 1975 Curt is one of the most dominant hockey players to ever wear a Shaler Area jersey. He was the team s leading scorer in the , , and the seasons, and he was named the team s most valuable player each of these three seasons. Curt was the WPIHL s leading scorer with 75 points in followed by 96 points the next season. Overall, he averaged an amazing five points per game in his high school career and is still the only Shaler hockey player to score 50 goals. Curt s other accolades include being selected as the WPIAL MVP in 1974, being named the WPIAL All-Star Game MVP in 1974, and being included on the prestigious WPIAL 25 th Anniversary All-Star Hockey Team in After high school, Curt was offered playing opportunities at both Denver University and the University of Wisconsin, but he opted to play closer to home at the University of Pittsburgh. In his four years at Pitt, he was the leading scorer and team mvp as well as the recipient of the Panther s Sports Recognition Award in In 1980, Curt was invited to try out for the United States Olympic Hockey team. After surviving several rounds of cuts, he was not extended an invitation to the final tryout.

Hannah Joyce Shaler Area Class of 1998 Hannah s dominance on the cross country and track and field teams at Shaler Area is evident not only by her five varsity letters, but also by the standards she has set for future Lady Titan runners. Hannah s 5:08 time in the 1600 meter and 11:03 in the 3200 hundred meter are still school records. Her other track and field accomplishments include first place finishes in the 3200 meter at both the Baldwin Invitational and WPIAL Finals in As a cross country runner, Hannah placed third in the WPIAL in 1998 and competed in the PIAA Championship that same year. After high school, Hannah attended the College of Charleston where she was named the 1998 Cross Country Team MVP. She also placed an amazing second in the South Carolina Division AA Collegiate State Championships.

Doug Maggio Shaler Area Class of 1980 Former Shaler Area Varsity Baseball Coach Jerry Matulevic describes Doug as a great player and a great leader. Doug was an all-section catcher and captain of the legendary 1980 Shaler Varsity Baseball Team which won both the WPIAL and PIAA Championships, compiling an overall record of He also starred on that years American Legion team which finished its season with a 54-6 record, winning another state championship. After graduation, Doug received scholarship offers from top baseball schools such as LSU and Miami. However, he opted for professional baseball when the Philadelphia Phillies drafted him in the third round. Doug played pro ball for almost four years for the Phillies and also the Cleveland Indians.

Clarence Metzger Coach/Etna Clarence coached baseball, football, and basketball at Etna High School. He literally influenced the lives of generations of young men during his many years of coaching. Former players marvel at the ability of their coach to inspire his players to compete as well and as hard as the players and teams that had preceded them. Clarence s teams consistently made the playoffs. One of his biggest regrets was not having one of his teams compete in any kind of state championship, despite having what he called great talent. This example demonstrates Clarence s humility as well as the genuine admiration and respect he had for each of his players.

William Suit Administrator Bill s love of sports began early in life. He played football and baseball in high school and then accepted a scholarship to play football at Slippery Rock. After graduation, Bill remained actively involved in sports as a coach, WPIAL official, teacher, and school administrator. As a teacher and administrator, Bill was always involved in interscholastic athletics. He coached both football and track. He also served on the WPIAL s Wrestling Committee, Nomination Committee, Hall of Fame Committee, Scholarship Committee, and even on its Board of Control. Bill also served as President of Quad A Football for two years. Perhaps Bill s greatest accomplishment, however, is the impact he has had on the lives of countless students and student athletes. He is a proud recipient of the Paul Schweiger Award, an honor voted on by the Shaler Area Senior Class each year which recognizes the educator who had the greatest influence on them. Bill also has a track award named in his honor. Over his many years as Shaler Area High School Principal, Bill was consistently in attendance at sporting events at all levels, motivating student athletes while encouraging school spirit and Titan pride.
