3 jamaica pond quaker friends school arch 517 summer 2010 This project was all about the landscape. Initially I documented and analyzed the site. I made models and tested out which site at Jamaica Pond would be best for a school. After I picked a site, I decided to make massing blocks and arrange the program according to sunlight. For one of my reviews, I had a model that was more of a diagram. I wasn t happy with the way it worked, so I discarded the features that didn t work and made my focus about a community. In my final model, I have an interior atrium space where the students and staff could socialize, fostering that sense of community. On the top floor is all the classrooms as well as the meeting room. On the bottom is the more public activities, including the library and multi-purpose space. The library opens out to a private swale that faces the constructed wetland. To the south, the multi-purpose space opens out towards the pond and amphitheater, making it more open. Along the north classrooms is a path that connects across the swale, and along the south facade is a vertical sun screen to block summer sunlight. The top story mimics the landscape s swale through its form, and the bottom story emphasizes the flow of the swale by the use of glass to make it transparent. 1 2

5 bicycle production center arch 467 fall 2009 From early bas relief models, I decided to work off the idea of tubes. In the beginning, the tubes acted as ornaments piercing through a glass facade. The idea was for the tubes to filter light and direct views, much like the work of artist Tara Donovan. After a critique, I realized I had to take a step back and re-evaluate what they could be. As you move out from the manufacturing space, the materials become lighter, going from concrete to translucent concrete to glass. The tubes on the glass facade serve as structure that hold up the exterior curtain wall. In the manufacturing space, the idea of tubes transformed into the idea of mass vs void. The space itself was enclosed by thick concrete walls pierced by holes. 5 6

7 ideo work space arch 245 fall 2008 The objective of this project was to design an office space for IDEO within a 25 x100 x60 volume that included spaces for reception, brainstorming, implementation, and prototyping. I researched Tadao Ando s works because of his use of concrete and light. I was inspired when I saw his Rokko Housing design, which led to my concept of intersecting volumes. The structure of the building is concrete columns. All of the rooms only touch one exterior wall of the building, leaving a gap that spans the distance from front to back. The idea was to have a strip of light shine through and reflect off the wall (much like the way light enters into Ando s Church of Light). sketch sketch 9 10

Most of the work I did was for the John and Frances Angelos Law Center at the University of Baltimore, but I also had the opportunity to help with several competitions and proposals.
