Were the joint-stock company Metrostav to issue a guidebook to the interesting projects it has realised to date, it would be a large and impressive publication indeed. 3 A part of the multinational DDM Group, the joint-stock company Metrostav ranks among the largest companies in its field of activity. The company s current position is well illustrated by it being presented a prestigious AAA award from the ČEKIA rating agency the Stability Award, in Although it currently focuses mainly on general construction contracts, it also pursues its original orientation. It is one of just a few construction companies capable of effectuating significantly specialized structures for underground railways and other works using mining technologies. The company is equipped with both modern technologies, such as TBMs, and qualified personnel. Many structures bearing Metrostav s seal have made their mark in the chronicles of technical achievements and their exceptionality is confirmed by prestigious awards in both local and foreign competitions. All Metrostav s key technologies are certified; the umbrella certificate being for general construction contracts under CSN EN ISO 9001:2001. The company also holds the National Security Office certificate for handling confidential information and can, therefore, participate in tenders on specially designated projects in the Czech Republic and other NATO member countries. The company has long given priority to environmental protection. It holds the certificate of environmental management under CSN EN ISO :2005 and has successfully passed the EMAS (Eco- Management and Audit Scheme) audit. The company also successfully completed the certification audit procedures of Social Accountability according to the SA 8 000:2008 standard. All Metrostav s construction activities are conducted so that they have as little impact as possible on the surroundings of the sites and using technologies and procedures as ecologically sound as possible. The company requires all of its subcontractors to take a similar approach. A three-time winner of the Safe Company award, Metrostav guarantees its adherence to the strictest standards of occupational safety. Metrostav perceives its strong economic position as a long-term social commitment and, being a founding member of the Businesses for Society Platform (formerly the Corporate Donors Club) the company strives for establishing clear rules of donorship. By its conduct, the company confirms that in the Czech Republic, as elsewhere, successful companies do not renounce their social accountability, that they are interested in supporting public benefit projects and that they are ready to seek new forms of co-operation with the non-profit sector. IT TAKES COURAGE TO SEEK NEW WAYS In recent years, Metrostav has proven its ability to adapt to changes in sector demand as well as to increasingly strict requirements regarding completion deadlines and quality of construction works. The company has shown everincreasing courage to build more challenging, progressive and large-scale buildings and structures. Many of these projects have attracted the attention of both professionals and the general public for their architectural concepts, the conditions in which they had to be built and the technologies that were used. Metrostav s works are well-known abroad, primarily in Slovakia, Croatia, Germany and also Iceland. In Iceland, the construction of two road tunnels, with a total length of over 10 kilometres, was a stepping stone to the company s participation in works on the underground railway in Helsinki, Finland. CONNECTING THE CITY UNDER GROUND Generations of Czech project architects and builders have dreamt of succeeding in designing and building underground spaces that would be open, full of light and free of columns or pillars. For many years, their vision was utopian. The beginning of the 21st century saw their dreams become reality through the Kobylisy single-nave mined underground station on segment IV of Prague s C1 underground line. It is situated some 40 metres underground and can be justly compared to an underground cathedral. The dimensions of the tunnel that had to be mined in very difficult geological conditions are indeed impressive: it is 148 metres long; the excavated cross-sectional area totals 220 square metres. The Prague metro C1 line segment between Nádraží Holešovice and Ládví on which the above-mentioned station can be found received the public Structure of the Year award, After the opening of this section, works continued on the IV.C2 segment to a total length of 4.6 km from Ládví to Letňany. The construction took almost four years to finish. Whereas the line segment from Ládví to Prosek is mainly cut-and-cover, the following section; Prosek to Letňany is mined (except for two short tunnels after Prosek Station and before Letňany Station). This structure by Metrostav also won the Transport Construction Work of the Year, The latest part of the Prague underground system under construction is a six-kilometre-long Line A segment between Dejvická and Motol. The tunnelling works on the Petřiny (Markéta) access gallery began in June Petřiny will be the first station that the TBM machines will go through during the driving of the running tunnels in spring, TAMING A MOUNTAIN WITH A ROAD TUNNEL Built by Metrostav, two road tunnels of a total length of 11 kilometres connected the northern Icelandic towns of Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður. The tunnels reduced the journey from the towns to the district town of Akureyri from 200 to 80 kilometres. They are two-lane, bidirectional tunnels with a cross section of 53 m2 and 19 safety bays. One is 3.9 km in length, the other 7.1 kilometres. This contract has been the company s biggest project abroad so far. Metrostav won the tender over five other companies from all over the world. During the actual mining, using the Drill & Blast method, the builders had to tackle the problem of a high-pressure ice-cold groundwater affluent that prevented the special cements from setting. Large-scale chemical grouting had to be used instead of the more common cement injection. In total, 633 tons of polyurethanes and 617 tons of quick-setting cement were used during construction. GIVING A PRECISE SHAPE TO MATERIALS With just a little imagination, Střížkov station on segment IV of Prague underground's C Line resembles a prehistoric fish. Two slanting and wideset steel arches that cross at the height of approximately 8 metres above ground are the base of a self-supporting steel structure covering the underground station that opens to the surface. The weight of the arches constitutes nearly one half of the construction's total weight of 1200 tons. The self-supporting steel roofing structure made by Metrostav steelmakers for a large sports arena in Vysočany weighs about 1250 tons and is 135 metres in diameter. The gigantic circular steel umbrella eighteen metres in diametre, bears 36 girders of up to 57 metres. The unique roofing structure of the arena, made of 1950 tons of steel and 15 tons of jointing material, won the European Award for Steel Structures in On the premises of MERO ČR in Nelahozeves, we can see large-scale crude oil storage tanks built by Metrostav that are among the largest in the world. Each of the tanks can hold up to 125 thousand cubic metres of oil and are used for storing a substantial part of the Czech national oil reserve. The largest of the prestressed reinforcedconcrete storage tanks were built by Metrostav on the premises of ČEPRO s centre in Loukov. Each one of the four tanks is 48 metres in diameter; their height to rooftop being 27 metres. UNDER WATER AND OVER VALLEYS A unique method of construction was used by Metrostav on the C Line segment of the Prague metro between Holešovice and Ládví. Two 168 metre long, vertically and horizontally curved tunnels were built from concrete in a dry dock on the bank of the river Vltava and were then slid into a trench cut into the river bed. It was the first ever time this technology was used in these or similar conditions and it won Metrostav a 'fib' (Fédération Internationale du Béton) award which is presented every four years to exceptional concrete constructions. Another interesting project was Metrostav s realization of the bridge across the Rybný brook on the D8 motorway between Trmice and the border with Germany. For the first time in the Czech Republic, a continuously moving form was used for the construction of the bridge pillars allowing 189 running metres of pillars to be built in 52 days. Another unique object is the reinforcedconcrete arch Oparno bridge. It is situated on the final section of the D8 motorway and is currently under construction in the České Středohoří nature reserve. It is 275 metres in length and has an arch span of 135 metres. It will carry the motorway over the strictly protected area of the Opárenské Valley on two independent bridge structures that consist of an arch below and a monolithic prestressed bridge deck above with a two-beam cross section. It has 13 spans, 17.5 to 24 metres wide. During its construction, the builders had to operate in the very restricted conditions of the natural reserve; for example, it was forbidden to enter any part of the protected valley. Another exceptional structure in Metrostav s portfolio is the 575 metres long motorway bridge over the Koberný pond on the D3 motorway from Tábor to Veselí nad Lužnicí. It consists of two separate bridge constructions, one for each direction, from cantilever concreted box beams made of pre-stressed concrete. Alongside abutments, its lower structure has five pairs of pillars ranging from 6 to 10 metres in length. Three pairs are situated directly in the pond. CREATING A MODERN WORKING ENVIRONMENT The category of administration buildings has acquired a new dimension. They are designed by well-known architects and their realization has become a matter of prestige. A great example is Amazon Court with its seven storeys and two underground levels. In terms of energy, its design was considered to small detail. For example, it is air-conditioned by air drawn in from just above the surface of the nearby river. The selected technical solutions placed high demands on the Metrostav realization team during construction. The building is a part of the River City administration complex that bears the distinctive signature of our company. Another distinctive structure bearing Metrostav's signature in this category is the business and office complex of Česká Pojišťovna in Pankrác, Prague. Optimal conditions and hygiene of the working spaces are maintained through a system of heating, air-conditioning and cooling provided by a cooling tower and 'Icebank', structured cabling and intelligent wiring. Also, the largest specialized library in the Czech Republic containing 1.5 million items the National Technical Library in the university complex in Prague-Dejvice is the work of Metrostav. The new building unites modern architectural style and atypical and innovative technical solutions for load-bearing structures. RETURNING THE SHINE AND GLAMOUR TO HISTORY In the renovation of historic buildings, Metrostav continues the craftsmanship and tradition of older generations of builders with its expertise and skill. It returns faded beauty and shine to protected heritage sites using state-of-the-art technologies. The company participated in the renovation of both Lichtenstein and Hartig Palaces, the Institute for Noble Ladies Palace at Prague Castle, Měšťanská beseda in Plzeň and the Czech embassy in Paris. It also has to its credit the unique restoration of Nostitz Palace in Prague's Lesser Town. A true test of skill of the company s employees was the renovation of the Karlín Music Theatre. Metrostav was also in charge of major renovation works on the Imperial Hotel on Na Poříčí street, Prague. Its methods needed to be harmonized with the requirements of heritage protection regarding the preservation of the maximum number of original features.

With the exception of the surface section on the Troja enbankment, the whole route leads through mined and cut-and-cover tunnels. Between Holešovice and Troja, a new bridge for tramway and motor transport, as well as for pedestrian use, is being built over the river Vltava. Large-scale underground garages are being constructed at Letná and Prašný most. Alongside the route of the internal city circle road, a flood control system in the form of a six-meter high earth dike is being put in place in Troja. It is capable of the realisation of comprehensive projects using the Design and Build system (i.e. including the preparation of design documentation and dealing with all legal requirements). Top technological equipment enables its workers to build roads and motorways, railway and tramway tracks, steel sandwich-structured and reinforcedconcrete bridges as well as other transportation structures. The division is able to design, develop and implement completely new working methods and techniques, especially for exacting bridge structures. Its earth moving service participates in transportation and industrial constructions, the building of basement complexes of commercial premises and factory buildings, complete terrain preparation, demolitions and recycling. The division operates standard, over-sized cargo, technological and non-technological freight haulage. It also pursues its activities outside the Czech Republic. It is the source of the company s key technologies for the construction of tunnels and underground structures. It has at its disposal its own highly skilled professionals for the construction of tunnels with the use of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, the Drill & Blast (so-called Scandinavian) method and TBMs. It can handle construction of difficult reinforced-concrete bridge structures. 27 DIVISION 6 Division 6 is a universal building division; it carries out general civil engineering as well as industrial and housing contracts, water management works, industrial and power engineering constructions. The division has a specialized department for monolithic reinforced-concrete structures that realizes even the most difficult projects in its field. Within its framework, the division offers the services of a rebar-processing plant, a timber yard and shuttering and scaffolding hire and also caters to interested external parties. It operates all over the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. It has regional offices in the region of southern Bohemia and the Vysočina region.
