2 About this Program This program is designed to easily capture data from a user s screen and pass it as a command line to a program or CSV File. It will capture the data from up to three different applications from six different methods. It can be activated by Hot Keys, an Icon on the Quick Launch Tool Bar or an Icon on the Desktop. Numerous Profiles can be setup to allow the user to capture different screens to different applications. There is also an Auto Start feature that will determine the active Window, match a profile to it and activate the progam Systems Requirements and Help This program requires Microsoft s Windows 2000 or later. There is no reason it will not work with Windows 98; however, it has not been tested with 98. Please call us at with any questions regarding requirements or for assistance with installation Setup Capturing the Data The first decision is what kind of capture should I be using? This is not easily explained as every application is a little different and what will work for one application may not work for another. Advantages Disadvantages Use Clipboard Reasonably quick the user has to copy the index information to the clipboard first This would be done by double clicking on the data and then pressing CTRL+C This method can be used by any application where data can be captured to the clipboard and allows the user to capture data from various programs The user may forget to copy it first and have to exit and start over or double key the data Capture from Handle Capture Highlighted Text The fastest and most accurate method of data collection, the index data is collected from Windows. The user just clicks on an Icon (or uses hot keys) and that s it. Once setup on one PC the settings will work on all PCs Similar to using the clipboard only the user only has to Most time consuming to setup and will not work with all applications. User could highlight wrong field for capture and only works with one application

The handle name is displayed on the top left side of the Window. Shown above are two Windows Handles one being Contacts Microsoft Outlook and the other Smith, Bubba Contact. When the user looks up another contact in Outlook, the Handle of the Window displaying the new contact will have the new contact s name followed by - Contact. Since the Window name changes with each contact s name, only the constant part of the Handle name can be used to identify the Window. Because of this only one window can be open with the same name selected. If more than one Window were open the software would not know which Window to use. When capturing the window handle, the output will be the portion not specifed in the setup. For instance, if Contact were entered in the setup using the above example, Smith, Bubba would be returned. Classes and Instances:

6 Classes are the type of data entry field on a users screen. The name of the class can vary by application. For instance, a simple text box where a user enters a name in one application may be called Edit in another application; it may be called Tedit or RichEdit20WPT. Utilities are available that allow the user to drag a mouse over the box to determine it s Class. The instance is which box of the type specified. Numerous boxes can be on a Window where the user can enter data, the instance is which of these boxes. Please note on different computers running the same application the Class Name may be different, however the instance will remain the same. The Window Name Open the Application and the Window that will be captured. In this example a Contact from Outlook will be used. Since numerous Windows can be open on a user s desktop it is important to define exactly the Window name containing the information that is going to be captured. Begin by opening the Window that contains the data to be captured. Press and hold the ALT key and press tab to flip through the Windows that are open. An Icon will be displayed along with the Window Handle. Although there are only two Outlook Icons shown, when flipping through the Icons, the user will realize that there are actually three Outlook Windows open. As can be seen here there are three Windows that are open in Outlook This window displays Contacts This Window displays the Inbox

7 This is the Contact record in Outlook of an Individual and is what will be captured. To separate it from the other Windows - Contact will be used as the Window name as the first part of this Window will change depending upon the contact being displayed. Important: Always use the static part of the Window name. In the screen shots above one Window is titled Contacts Microsoft Outlook However; the one containing the information to be captured is titled Thomas Wheeler Contact. If the word Contact was used the software would not know which Window to capture. However by using - Contact it will capture the Widow that has the contacts information. Always use as much of the Window name as possible and remember that it is case sensitive. Obtaining Class Name Many applications use similar class names such as Edit, Tedit, ComboBox etc and these are built into the utility that edocfile has created for testing instance. However, there are excellent free utilities that display more information. It is suggested that one be used to obtain the name of the class. The edocfile Website has links to three of these utilities under the Utilities Section. The easiest to use is WinID. WinID WinID allows to get the most important information about MS Windows control classes, styles, and window titles. All you need is to point mouse cursor to a window, or any of system or customcreated controls. It employs functionality of the Microsoft Visual Studio Spy++ tool adding visual simplicity and compactness. WinExplorer WinExplorer is a utility that shows all system's windows in hierarchical display. For every window in the hierarchy, you can view its properties, like handle, class name, caption, size, position and more. You can also modify some properties, like Caption and Visible/Enabled. You can use this utility in all Win32-based operating systems: Windows 95,98,ME,NT,2000,XP

8 WinDowse An extremely convenient tool for obtaining necessary technical information about any window, best Borland's WinSight replacement. Place a mouse cursor on a window, and WinDowse will show all about the window: Download one of the utilities and install it to obtain the window class. Show below is WinID. With WinID the user just places the cursor over the area that contains the information they want to capture and its properties are displayed on the screen. Shown here is a Contact in Outlook. The cursor is over Bubba Smith and the Title Shown in WinID is Bubba, Smith (this is the contents of the field not the Window Name). The class is RichEdit20WPT; however the instance is not displayed. edocfile s Test Class and Instance Utility should now be used. This utility checks the contents of the first 25 instances of a class and generates a report at the end showing the contents. Open the Test Class and Instance Utility by going to Start/All Programs/eDocFile/Capture Test Utilities and select Test Class and Instance A new Window will open

9 Enter the Window Name (Remember only the part that does not change) and the class. If the class name is not in the drop down enter it in the text box. Click on Continue The Window the user is capturing will be brought forward with the capture results window on top of it.

10 Click on OK to test the next location Continue Clicking on OK each time the menu appears, it will only appear if something is captured. When finished a text file will open showing the results

11 Use the information in the text file to fill in the fields in the setup menu. Obtaining Screen Location Determine the Window name as explained above and open Test Screen Capture Locations by going to Start/All Programs/eDocFile/Capture Test Utilities/Test Screen Capture Locations A new Window will appear

12 Click on Continue Enter the Name of the Window that contains the data to be captured. If the Window Name changes with different documents, enter the portion that remains the same. Click on OK The Window to be captured will appear with this message box on top of it. Data is usually captured left to right. (However some applications do it right to left) Click on yes to continue (Always try left to right first) A new Window will appear on top of the screen to be captured

13 Move the cursor to the left side of the data to be captured without clicking on the screen Press Enter Note: If the window being captured is clicked on the message box will disappear. If this happens, Click on the application window again if necessary to bring it to the front, Click on the beginning of the field that is to be captured, WITHOUT MOVING THE MOUSE, Press Tab + Enter until the Capture the Field Window appears. Press Enter The location of the field will be recorded and its contents displayed.

14 Click on OK Click on Yes to repeat the process Clicking on No opens the following Window Yes Generates the following report

15 Clicking on No Exits the Utility Setup Output The four output types: 1. Run Program Creates a text line that is passed to activate a program with the captured data, similar to using the Start/Run. With the command line being passed 2. Execute File Opens the file in the default application. This is idea to passing the captured data to a browser. 3. CSV Creates a CSV file with the captured data. The CSV file will be the same name as the profile and stored in the path specified in the CSV Output Path (this folder must exist). The CSV file can be one file with each line added to the end of it or it can be set to create a series of one line CSV files. 4. Note Pad Demo returns captured data and output command line to Note Pad where it can be viewed and checked, used for testing The Command Line The Command line is broken down into four sections. Enter the text up until the first field value in the first box. The text between field 1 and 2 goes in the second box. The text between field 2 and 3 goes in the third box. The last box is the value that appears after the last field The Note Pad Option

16 This is ideal for testing the program. If checked the values captured will appear with the command line in notepad. The command line will not be passed to the application. This allows the user to check the command line without the browser changing it. Saving the Profile When finished enter a name for your profile in the Save As Box, if only one profile is to be used name it default. Setting up Hot Keys Right Click on the Shortcut to Capture to Command Line Icon Select Properties A new Window will Open

17 Place your cursor in the Shortcut key box and click Enter the Hot Key to be used CTRL+ALT+ The key to be used Click on Apply and then OK Setting up multiple Hot Keys Repeat the process for setting up Hot Keys only edit the target field (as shown below) by adding a forward slash the letters initouse /initouse=web.ini and the profile name you want to run.

18 As many profiles as needed can be created and run. Setting up AutoStart Open the file c:\edocfile\autoini.txt

19 Create a line for the Window Title and then enter = and the name of the Profile to use. The software will capture the current Window Name, match it to the value on the left of the equals sign and execute the Profile on the right of the equals sign. If no match is found the default profile will be used.
