1 Migrate from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail Windows Live Mail is the successor to Microsoft's Outlook Express mail client. Windows Live Mail is not preinstalled with Windows 7. It can be downloaded from Microsoft for a computer running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. There are different versions for each operating system. Outlook Express is not included with Windows 7 and the Address Book (on Windows XP) has been replaced with Windows Contacts. Windows Live Mail provides access to any account that could be used in Outlook Express. Users of Windows XP (32 bit version only, not available for 64 bit systems) can upgrade to Windows Live Mail and their Outlook Express settings for their Main Identity will automatically be imported into Windows Live Mail. Users upgrading to Windows 7 on the same computer, or moving to Windows 7 on a new computer will need to back up their Outlook Express data. Backup instructions start on page 5. Each scenario is detailed below. Installing on a Windows XP Computer that has Outlook Express If you are installing Windows Live Mail to a Windows XP computer that has a working version of Outlook Express, the first time you run Windows Live Mail it will automatically import all of your accounts and mail from your Main Identity in Outlook Express. If you have multiple Identities in Outlook Express you can import those by selecting Identities from the File menu in Windows Live Mail. 1. If you have Outlook Express open, close the program now. 2. Install Windows Live Mail. Please read the Download and Installation Notes beginning on page 12 of the installation instructions before installing the program. Continue with the next step after installation. 3. Run Windows Live Mail for the first time: Click Start, and then All Programs, the Windows Live folder, and then Windows Live Mail. (You will see a message that

2 Installing on a Windows XP Computer that has Outlook Express 2 WLM is Importing Accounts from Outlook Express.) If you have multiple Identities set up in Outlook Express, follow the steps below. Importing Multiple Identities 1. In order to perform the following steps, you need access to the menus. The menus are not visible by default. Click the Menu Control icon on the right end of the Title bar of the program, and then click Show menu bar. If you do not want to have menus showing all the time, you can simply press and release the Alt button once 2. Click File, and then click Identities The Identity Import dialog box will appear with an explanation that individual user accounts provide better security. 3. Click Next.

3 Installing on a Windows XP Computer that has Outlook Express 3 4. Leave the selection to Import Identities as it is, and click Next. 5. Select the Identity that you wish to import, and then click Next The progress bar will display while the import is being processed.

After the selected identity has been imported, if you have more identities you can use the Back button to select the others for import. 7. Click Finish. You will find each of the imported Identities in the navigation pane on the left side of the interface. Notice that each has its own Inbox and other folders as the Identity has been set up as a separate account. If you don t see all of the personal folders that you created in the Outlook Express Identity, scroll down to the Storage folders area. You should be able to find them there. Note: the Identity import process can only be performed one time for each Identity. If for any reason you delete the account that was created in Windows Live Mail for an Identity, you will not be able to import that identity again.

5 Installing after upgrading the current Operating System to Windows 7 5 Installing after upgrading the current Operating System to Windows 7 Before upgrading the operating system, backing up Outlook Express's DBX files is recommended. How you perform the upgrade will determine if you need the backup files or not. If you upgrade from XP and do not reformat the hard drive, all of your Outlook Express files will still be located on the drive. For each folder in a mailbox, Outlook Express saves its messages in a single compressed file with an extension of.dbx. For example, all messages in the Inbox will be in a file named Inbox.dbx. Reading this tutorial from Microsoft is recommended: 7?T1=tab01 The following is a Manual method to Export and Import your Messages, Address Book, and Internet accounts using a backup device. If you use this Manual method, you must repeat the steps for each Identity that you have setup in Outlook Express. 1. DBX files can be located within Outlook Express by clicking Tools, then Options, then Maintenance, then Store Folder. When the Store Location dialog box appears, right click on the address, and then click Select All from the popup menu. Now, right click on the highlighted address, and click Copy to use Windows Explorer to find the files. Typically the Store Folder is named something similar to C:\Documents and Settings\XP_User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{D AED BFF B0B5C06}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Be sure to copy the entire Store Folder, Outlook Express, including any sub-folders, to a location that can be easily accessed when the reinstall is completed with a device such as a USB flash drive or backup drive. 2. To export the Address Book, open Outlook Express. Click Addresses, then File, then Export. Choose Other Address Book from the popup menu. Select Text File (Comma Separated Values) as the file type, and then click Export. In the Save exported file as: type in a file name such as OE6 Addresses. Click the Browse button and select the location you would like to save this file, and then click Save. When you click Next, you will be given the option to select more fields such as First Name. It s a good idea to select all the fields. Then click Finish. When saving this file, be sure this is a location that you can copy to a removable device such as a USB flash drive or backup drive. 3. To export Outlook Express Internet account files (.iaf), click Tools, Accounts, the Mail tab, and select the account you want to export. Click the Export button, and choose a location to save the file that can be copied to a backup device. It will already be named as it was in your list with an extension of.iaf. Click the Save button. You should do this for each account that you want to export. 4. Upgrade the operating system to Windows Download and install Windows Live Mail as described on page 1 of this document.

6 Installing on a new PC and importing Outlook Express Data 6 Message Import 6. To import your messages, open Windows Live Mail and click the Menu tab, then Import Messages, then Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Browse to the location on your removable device that you used earlier to copy the Outlook Express folder containing the dbx files and select the folder you created in step 1 above. Your imported message folders will be located in the Storage Folders area of the navigation pane on the left side of the interface. It will be listed as Imported Folder. You can expand this folder to find your sub-folders. Address-book Import 7. To import your Address Book into the Windows Live Mail Contacts, click Contacts on the lower left area of the interface. Click All Contacts at the top of the list, then Import on the right hand end of the top ribbon, select Comma separated values (.CSV), then Browse to the location on your removable device that you used earlier to copy the Outlook Express folder containing the dbx files and select the folder you created in step 2 above 8. Select your file, and then click Open. 9. Click Next. 10. The CSV Import dialog box will appear. Click the Finish button. Internet Accounts Import 11. To import your Internet account file (.iaf) in Windows Live Mail, click the Menu tab, and then point to Options, and then accounts. 12. When the Accounts dialog box appears, click the Import button. 13. Browse to the location on the USB flash drive or backup drive or you saved the file in step Select the file by clicking on it, and then click the Open button. 15. Click the Close button to close the Accounts dialog box. Your account will appear in the navigation pane on the left side of the interface. Installing on a new PC and importing Outlook Express Data If you choose to use the Manual method, backing up Outlook Express's DBX files, Addressbook, and Internet accounts is required. Use the same procedure as the previous section except for step 4. As an alternative, you may wish to use Windows Easy Transfer that is included with Windows 7. In Windows 7, click the Start button, and then began typing Easy Transfer in the search box immediately above the Start button. You should see the program listed and at the top of your menu. It can also be downloaded from here, IS/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer.

Open Outlook Express on your Windows XP computer and choose "Address Book" export function from the "File" menu 2. Select "Text File (Comma Separated Values)" option and click the "Export" button to continue

8 Manual Address Book Export and Import Details for Windows XP Move to the folder in which you want to store the exported CSV Outlook Express address book (use the browse function) 4. Enter a file name for the CSV file and click "Save" 5. Click Next.

This ensures that all information from the Outlook Express address book will be exported 7. Click "Finish" when done. A pop-up will display a confirmation message once the address book has been successfully saved to the CSV format 8. If moving to a new computer, Copy and move the CSV Outlook Express address book to the Windows 7 computer; use a Flash drive or just the CSV file to yourself. Importing Windows Address Book contacts into Windows Live Mail The screen shots on the following pages are from the Windows XP version of Windows Live Mail. Images for the Windows 7 version are not available in this document. If you are importing to a Windows 7 version, follow the steps beginning with step 7 on page 6 of this document.

Click"Contacts" from the "Go" menu You must unhide the Windows Live Mail toolbar to get these options. See the first image on page 2 of this document. 11. It's now time to import the entries from the CSV file into Windows Contacts. Choose "Import" -> "Comma Separated Values (CSV)"

12 Manual Address Book Export and Import Details for Windows XP The system will ask you to choose the fields you like to import. I suggest selecting everything if that's what you had done when you had exported the data from Outlook Express Windows Contacts will be populated with Values from the CSV file Congratulations! You have been able to successfully move the entries from Outlook Express address book to the Windows Live Mail Contacts application in Windows XP.
