The Conference Board s periodic benefits trends survey provides essential information to help you direct and refine you benefits plan. Nicole Stewart, the study s author, will present the benefits benchmarking report publicly for the first time at this event. The findings are based on a survey of hundreds of Canadian employers, and offer a wealth of real-world data and experience. The Value of Specialty Medications: An Employer s Perspective Louise Chénier, Manager, Workplace Health and Wellness Research, The Conference Board of Canada Suzanne Lepage, Private Health Plan Strategist, Suzanne Lepage Consulting Inc. Employers have many difficult benefits plan choices, particularly as they relate to specialty medications. While the high costs of such medications are known, there s little information on the benefits these medications may bring employees and their employers. To address this knowledge gap, in 2014 the Conference Board launched an in-depth study on the return on investment of specialty medications. The Board s study assessed specialty medications in 5

6 DAY 1 / Tuesday, October 20, 2015 the treatment of some common diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Two of the study s authors will present the results, and discuss the implications for employers, governments, and plan providers. 12:00 p.m. Luncheon and Presentation Is the Sky Falling? Sarah J. The compensation and benefits packages that companies offer today are also evolving faster than ever, as technology, medicine, and employee expectations change. With increasing health care costs, and new, high-cost specialty drug launches becoming routine, plan sponsors are left wondering what s next, and how can anyone possibly stay ahead of the changes? And, like many, they use a wide array of surveys, and benefits and wellness programs to understand and improve the health and engagement of their faculty and staff. This was the question Ann Dowsett Johnston posed to dozens of women. Not one woman chose alcoholic. Why? The stigma was too overwhelming. For 20 years, scientists have known that alcohol addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease. While there has been strong national leadership around stigma and mental health, the voices on addiction have been silent. Ann s page on the National Speakers Bureau Web site Based on her own experiences, Ann will explore the issues related to alcoholism, and recommend how to create workplace policies and practices to deal with this important health and productivity challenge. 9

10 DAY 2 / Wednesday, October 21, :15 a.m. Plenary Session 8 Mental Health and Addiction Disorders: Navigating Dual Diagnosis Disabilities in the Workplace Colleen J. Hutchings,Director, Organizational Health, Group Benefits, Sun Life Financial Canada Hear from one of the industry leaders, Colleen Hutchings, as she provides an update on absence statistics and related costs, and discusses the complex relationship between mental health and addiction disorders. In her presentation, Colleen will drill down on the challenges of mental health and addiction faced by employers and providers in managing disability issues as they relate to: stigma, maintaining employment, access to treatment, and managing workplace issues when two complex conditions are present. Part A Comprehensive Drug and Alcohol Program in Action at Emera Much attention has been paid to the alarming substance abuse trends in the workforce. Less attention has been dedicated to comprehensive programs to manage these issues. Alcohol and drug abuse and addiction are sensitive topics people prefer to avoid. Leanne Dixon will discuss how Emera has approached these challenges head on. 10

11 Wednesday, October 21, 2015 In an overview of Emera s initiatives, Leanne will discuss the lessons learned, including: operational challenges dealing with multiple stakeholders working with third party vendors Leanne will also share how the company manages the return to work for employees with substance abuse issues. Part B Engaging Middle Managers in Mental Wellness at Canada Post Mental health issues are a major cause of short and long-term absences, but organizations often struggle with providing effective support. Progressive employers know that, if they can help employees deal with their mental health issues, everyone wins. In working to align with the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, Canada Post has seen encouraging results.
