2 COMMUNICATION EXCELLENCE PROGRAM Graduate Division helps graduate students and postdoctoral scholars speak clearly, succinctly, and comfortably to a variety of audiences inside and outside of the academy. COURSES Graduate students must apply to enroll in the course. Academic courses are open to all disciplines. Science Communication Skills (Phy Sci Winter; BioSci Spring) Science communication skills enable UCI grad students to lead the next century of discovery, impact world policy, architect a better planet, win multi-million dollar grants for their prize-winning research or simply continue to have the resources to pursue their scientific interests, wherever they might lead. PUBLIC SPEAKING: ACTIVATE TO CAPTIVATE Communication Certificate Series In this 8-week communication certificate program participants will learn and practice strategies to craft a dynamic and compelling presentation including: - Overcoming anxiety - Commanding a room - Effectively communicating with an audience of any size This certificate program is offered quarterly during the academic year and is open to postdocs and graduate students. INTERVIEW SKILLS BOOT CAMP This three-day boot camp provides the tools for participants to enter any interview situation with confidence including how to: - Adapt to changing circumstances and handle surprises with confidence - Practice effective small talk - Learn to interview in any setting, including interviewing with an individual, a panel, during a meal and on Skype. The Interview Skills Boot Camp is offered in the winter quarter and is open to postdocs and graduate students. PUBLIC SPEAKING BOOT CAMP - SUMMER This interactive four-day series teaches basic communication and public speaking techniques in order to transform a participant s ability to present persuasively to audiences large and small. The Public Speaking Boot Camp is offered in the summer and is open to postdocs and graduate students. COMMUNICATION CONSULTANT TRAINING CERTIFICATION - WINTER This certification program teaches participants how to conduct workshops and offer individual coaching/outreach to their peers at the GRC. Communication Consultant Certification training is offered during the winter quarter and is open to postdocs and graduate students. UNDERSTANDING THE U.S. CLASSROOM AS A STUDENT AND TEACHING ASSISTANT Thursday, October 22 from 11:00 AM 12:30 PM Discover methods for communicating science to non-scientific audiences. The workshop will cover public speaking skills including presence, dealing with anxiety, engaging the audience, and answering questions. WRITING YOUR WAY TO A FOCUSED RESEARCH QUESTION Thursday, October 29 from 1:30 2:30 PM The first step to writing an academic paper is creating a statement that identifies a phenomenon to be studied, also known as a research question. Explore different strategies for focusing your research question. LITERATURE REVIEW: TELLING THE STORY OF YOUR RESEARCH Tuesday, November 3 from 2:00 3:00 PM Build an effective literature review and sharpen your writing. The literature review defines prominent terminology, theories, and methods in a topic. This is important for academic writing as well as grant applications. This workshop reviews the specific problems graduate writers face in conducting a literature review and offers strategies for addressing them. INCORPORATING SOURCES AND AVOIDING PLAGIARISM Thursday, November 12 from 1:30 2:30 PM This interactive workshop shares strategies for correctly paraphrasing, summarizing and citing sources. This strengthens your writing and maintains academic integrity. STYLE, FLOW, & VOICE: EDITING AND REVISING Thursday, November 19 from 1:30 2:30 PM Learn revision strategies designed to clarify and organize your argument, create effective and concise paragraphs and sentences, and develop efficient editing skills. 5 DISSERTATION BOOT CAMP NOVEMBER Participate in our next Dissertation Boot Camp (DBC), an intensive 3-day writing opportunity for graduate students in the writing stage of their dissertation. The DBC helps writers overcome blocks, make significant progress in a short period of time, and develop skills for future academic writing. Dissertation Boot Camp provides: Three days of structured writing time in a quiet, distraction free setting Short, daily lessons on dissertation writing and goal setting Individualized consultation opportunities to address specific writing needs Opportunities for continued, peer-driven dissertation writing sessions Free refreshments including breakfast, lunch, coffee and snacks REQUIREMENTS TO ATTEND THE DBC: Must register via ([email protected]) Must attend all three days (9am-5pm on the first two days and 9am-1pm on the last day) First time attendees will have priority and returning attendees will be placed on a waitlist The DBC answered many questions I had in writing my dissertation. It should be a requirement class for every PhD student. Previously I struggled with time management and motivation. The Dissertation Boot Camp helped me enormously with both.
