3 GETTING THERE Location The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business European campus in Barcelona is located near Passeig de Gracia in the city s central business and entertainment district. The building is also used as a conference center. For airport information, call Metro There is a Metro station on Passeig de Gracia down the block from the school. This line connects with all of the main lines of the city. Taxis In tipping taxi drivers, rounding up the fare or adding on 5 percent is standard. Lockers For your convenience, there are 32 lockers available during class sessions in the basement floor. Two lockers are assigned per group. If you want to use a locker, please ask for a key at the Program Office and make sure you return it at the end of the session. You are required to remove all your belongings after every session. BARCELONA VISITOR INFORMATION For first-time visitors to Barcelona, we have compiled some useful information about services and customs. For Holmes Place Balmes Two blocks from the GSB. Language In Barcelona, as in the rest of Catalonia, there are two Bookstores official languages: Catalan and Spanish. The GSB recommends Casa del Llibre, one block from the school. It carries extensive literature in many languages. Casa del Llibre Passeig de Gracia Medical Assistance Hospital, Clinic, is at Casanova 151, five minutes away from the school by taxi. Students are responsible for their Car Rental own medical insurance. We suggest the following agency: Vanguard c/ viladomat (25 percent discount for GSB students.) Passports and Visas Non-Spanish citizens are required to hold a passport from their home countries in order to enter Spain. Please Currency The Spanish currency is the Euro (s). Check the rate before you go at check with your country s consulate regarding visa requirements. U.S. citizens do not need visas for travel to Spain. 6 the school. Weather Post Office There is a post office located directly across the street from the school. It is open Monday through Friday, with limited hours on Saturdays. It is closed Sundays. Barcelona enjoys a relatively mild Mediterranean climate. The annual average temperature is 15.8ºC (about 60 F). In winter and spring, the temperature can range between 11ºC and 17ºC (50 F and 60 F). In summer, it can easily reach 25ºC to 30ºC (80 F to 90 F). Tipping Standards Standard tip in restaurants is about 10 percent. In a taxi, add 5 percent or round up. Tourist Information The main tourist office in Barcelona is located in Placa Catalunya 17. Bus Turistic, a double deck bus with an open top, stops at the main areas of interest in Barcelona.
