Help Guide About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties Using a combination of a Capture Mode and the Input and Output options, gives you many, many different ways to capture what is on your screen. In fact, there are so many different ways, it would be hard to number them all or to mention every possible capture combination. However, to make it faster and easier to take different kinds of captures, s capture categories are all organized for you according to their mode. The modes can be found on the main interface within the Capture Settings Pane. In general, each capture type is considered a mode and each mode has it s own Input, Output, and Properties that you can control in order to get just the right capture. The following topics are contained within this chapter: Capture Modes Overview Capture Input Overview Capture Mode & Input Combinations Input Properties About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties 15

Help Guide Capture Modes Overview Capture Modes are general categories of the different types of captures that you can take using. There are five different modes or general categories. Once you select a mode, you will have many different types of output to select from which will allow you to capture exactly what you need on the screen. For instance, if you select Image as your mode, then you can select to capture, or input, the entire screen, a window on the screen, or just a piece of the screen. Once the image is captured, you can select to output the image to a file, an , Instant Messenger, and more. The following table gives a brief overview of each of the five different capture modes. Following this table is more in-depth information on each capture mode. Icon Mode Name Image Capture Text Capture Video Capture Web Capture Printer Capture Overview captures an image of your screen or any portion of it. You can capture images of any software application, DirectX games, from scanners, or anything else you see on your computer screen. Once captured, you can send the image to many outputs including a graphic file, the printer, , or even a Web server. See also Image Capture Overview. captures the text you see on the screen as editable, ASCII text. can even save the text in tab delimited format so that it can be easily imported into spreadsheets or database applications for sorting and other manipulation. See also Text Capture Overview. records any on-screen activity on your Windows desktop. Capture all your mouse movements and application action and save the video as an industry-standard AVI file. You can also use to create time-lapse video of desktop activity over a period of time. See also Video Capture Overview. With Web Capture, you can simultaneously capture all the images from a Web site. All you need to do is type in the Web site address. You can then select the Web page link depth, which is the number of levels of directories from the root Web address to be included in the search. See also Web Capture Overview. captures anything you would normally send to a printer and spools it to an image file instead. You do this by printing to the virtual printer from any Windows application. Printer Capture settings are accessed from the main interface by selecting Tools > Printer Capture Settings. See also Working with Printer Capture. 16 About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties

Help Guide Image Capture Overview The Image Mode allows you take a capture of your screen in graphic format. When you take an image capture using, you are actually saving a GIF graphic. Pngs are highly compressed images that contain data about the placement of pixels on your computer screen. These files can be saved as they are or they can be edited in Preview Window, Editor, or by another compatible graphics program. Image Capture works by taking a "screenshot" of whatever you tell it to and allowing you to save, file, print, or mail it. To make a screenshot, put the desired screen on your computer monitor, return to, select the desired Input and Output options, and select the Capture button. Depending on the output options you have set, takes the screenshot, allows you to preview it (if selected), and sends it to your selected output. Text Capture Overview Text Mode is a feature that brings an easier solution to frequent users of Edit > Copy/Paste or for anyone who has found themselves writing down text from the screen or a dialog box. Text captures are created from the text on the screen, not from bitmaps or graphics, which are ignored in this mode of capture. While most computer programs can make copies of text and paste it, adds some important features you do not get with copy and paste. allows you to: Capture text from screens that do not allow copy and paste in Windows (not available on the other platforms with which operates). Not all screens or programs have these edit features. works with most screens seen on your computer. Keep the approximate vertical and horizontal placement of text or have collapse these spaces. Use s Auto Scroll so that scrolling and highlighting long screens or blocks of text is not necessary. Send output to a variety of destinations such as the Clipboard, printer, Preview Window, or a file with flexible naming and saving. Annotate and timestamp the captured text. Append text to one file to keep a running log of captured passages. This can be used for clipping notes from your Web browser or er to a file to share with others. Also use it to capture a series of error messages from a program to send to technical support persons. Text files are saved in ASCII format and are usually appended with a.txt filename extension. These files are small when compared to image files and video. Almost all computer programs (word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, or graphics programs) can import and operate with ASCII text. All of the text capture options that you set for are saved independently of the other capture types. There are two ways to use text capture: from screen images or from the clipboard. About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties 17

Help Guide Capture Text from Screen Images Capture text on the screen in the same way that you use to capture image files from the screen. Rather than capturing an image, though, you capture plain ASCII text. This allows you to capture text even if the program you are capturing from does not support Edit > Copy or File > Save. When capturing text from screen images, "reads the screen" for you. Some programs and "Rich Text" windows can not be captured, but can probably be captured from the clipboard. Capture Text from the Clipboard In capturing text from the clipboard, works as a Windows Clipboard enhancement tool. can boost productivity by automatically capturing text from the Windows Clipboard and sending it to the configured text Output. Your text captures can be annotated and text can be appended to files. With the Clipboard Chain option, you can automatically capture and output text copied to the Clipboard (without pressing a hotkey). is an intelligent and configurable Edit > Paste command. Video Capture Overview Video Capture Mode allows you to take a movie of what is happening on your screen. There Anyone who has used a video camera knows the value of video when compared to snapshots. And, if you have gone to the movies lately, you have seen computer-enhanced moving images in animation and special effects. Imagine having some of this same power on your own computer. Overall, using Video Capture can dramatically change how you interact with your computer. Here are some of the ways people are making using Video Capture: Creating Windows program demonstrations that show the movement of the cursor, selection of menus, interaction with programs (such as entering text or commands), and the finish. These demonstrations, when shown to users or possible users, can illustrate the high points of a program and how the program can be used. Adding audio to your videos using Input > Record Audio. You can record sounds through a microphone "real time" while capturing video from the screen. Adding video captures on the Web to enliven Web sites. This can make a Web site more dynamic and dramatic by adding elements of multimedia. Any movement on your computer screen can be captured with. Recording program actions and reactions. You could record a sequence of actions to remind yourself, or show colleagues, how to perform a task. Important Information: When you make a video capture using, you are actually saving a series of bitmap graphics, that, when replayed quickly in sequence, show movement. These captures are stored as AVI files. Video files can be placed in other Windows programs and in all Microsoft Office programs. The file shows the video viewer where you pasted the AVI file. The viewer is stopped on the first frame of the captured video. The user can view, pause, stop, replay, and close the video by clicking the controls on the viewer. AVI file size tends to be quite large for long, complex videos. AVIs over one megabyte in size are not uncommon. Keep the size to a limit by: Limiting the size of the program window being captured. Do not bother adding more content than is necessary (size or length). 18 About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties

Help Guide Hint: Use s Region input selection to select a smaller area to capture and then "pan" across the screen while capturing, thereby making a much smaller video file. Limiting the speed at which video frames are captured. Limiting the length of the video capture sequence. captures video sequences in real-time seconds and minutes. The shorter your sequence, the smaller the AVI file. Changing compression. By default, selects the best compression to use for your capture and system. Experimenting with the settings is also possible. Note: Video capture is started by pressing the hotkey combination. Stop capturing by pressing the same hotkeys again. Tip: Tip: Rehearse your video capture sequences to get the best results. Mouse and cursor movement can be jerky, hesitant, or too fast for the capture to collect. To remove some of these problems, which can be annoying to those viewing the video, practice the sequence slowly, then speed up as you go. By viewing glitches and correcting them, you can make a professional-looking video sequence that can be saved and shown. A frequent complaint about computer videos that include cursor movement is that the cursor looks as if it jumps and the program reacts before the viewer can see where the mouse is. Prevent this by practicing precision movements of the cursor to the menu or button you must click, pausing for a fraction of a second over the element, then clicking. On the video capture, the cursor travels smoothly to the menu or button and stops there briefly before movement happens and a different screen or menu attracts the viewer s eye. Web Capture Overview Use Web Capture mode to search (scan) and gather images published on a Web site. For example, you can specify any public Web site URL to capture all images used on the site. This is the easiest and best way to build a library of Web images. Preview the images to be captured from the Web site, then include or exclude them from the final scan. After capturing these images, they can be directed to any folder on your PC or to a designated Catalog Folder so they can be browsed and viewed using Catalog. GIF, JPG, and PNG files can be scanned and captured using Web Capture. See also Fixed Address, Prompt for Address, and Web Capture Preferences. About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties 19

Help Guide Capture Input Overview The Capture Input simply tells what it is that you want to capture on the screen. The Capture Mode and the Capture Input work side-by-side to help you define exactly what it is that you what to capture. You can think of the Mode as the general capture category and the Input as the more specific category. Each mode has it s own particular input options Once you have selected the Mode and the Input, you can define even more specific options using the Input Properties. The properties allow you to fully customize your capture, enabling you to get just the capture you need. For example, if Image Capture is my Mode, I can select Screen as my Input. This means that will capture the entire PC screen as an image. If you select Image Mode and then Input > Window, then you get to select the window that you want to capture as an image. Each capture mode has its own set of input options and their associated Properties. These input options and properties can be accessed from the s main interface by the doing the following: 1. First select the desired Mode. 2. Select the Input button. 3. Select the desired input from the dropdown menu that displays. 4. Select the Input Properties by clicking on the Properties button next to the Input button. Each of the different capture inputs are described in the following chapter, Capture Mode & Input Combinations. For a description of each of the Input Properties, see Input Properties. 20 About Capture Modes, Input, and Input Properties

Push the <Scroll Lock> key to start capture. The capture is made, and the Scroll Lock indicator on the keyboard lights to indicate when is ready for another capture. If you are not using a timed capture, continue taking shots with <Scroll Lock>. 6. Push and hold <Scroll Lock> to take the last shot. To Touch Up DirectX Program Screens: Note: Since many game scenes are dark, use these procedures to touch up the captures in Editor. 1. Open Catalog or the folder where your images are stored. 2. Double-click a DirectX capture. The image opens in Editor. 3. Within the Tasks Pane, select Color Editing > Color Correction > Gamma. 4.
