Welcome Welcome to the SnagIt Enterprise Installation Guide. This is a comprehensive guide on how to make the enterprise installation run smoothly for SnagIt versions and earlier. SnagIt has become an indispensable utility for organizations of all types and sizes. Just like an program or a word processing program, every user can benefit from SnagIt s capabilities to capture and share information. One of the growing challenges of enterprise-wide applications, such as SnagIt, is deploying the software to all of the personal computers. In an effort to accommodate this challenge, SnagIt offers an Enterprise Installation Mode that enables technology administrators to deliver SnagIt throughout an organization with a series of options suited to meet specific needs. These options include: Custom Installation: Enables administrators to set the specific options, application defaults and profiles for all SnagIt users. This is a great option when installing SnagIt for users that are not already familiar with the application or for setting up all users with defaults that comply with specific organizational standards. Silent Installation: Enables administrators to configure SnagIt to install behind the scenes without prompting all of the installation options to the end user, making for a more user-friendly deployment. The benefit of this option is that it does not interrupt a user s current workflow, giving the administrator flexibility as to when they perform the installation. Import and Export SnagIt Configuration Settings after Installation: Enables administrators or power users to install SnagIt to configure the settings and then export those settings to share with others in the organization. This works great when network deployment isn t possible or SnagIt is already installed throughout the organization. Additionally, SnagIt can be configured for a network installation point, alleviating the task of taking a CD from computer to computer. An important benefit is that administrators can configure SnagIt to automatically deploy the multi-user license key from the network installation point, preventing the manual entry of the license key to each individual SnagIt user. The best thing is that these options are not mutually exclusive, enabling the combination of a custom configuration and a silent installation, providing the administrator the flexibility to deploy SnagIt in a manner optimal for the organization. To learn more about how to deploy SnagIt using the Enterprise Installation Mode, please refer to the remainder of the information in this guide. 2

SnagIt s Enterprise Installation Mode Introduction SnagIt s Enterprise Installation mode was designed to help you quickly install SnagIt on multiple machines within your organization. Running the Enterprise Installation option creates a Network Installation Point, allowing users to install SnagIt on their local machines by running your custom setup from a shared network folder. During the Enterprise Installation process, you will create both a custom setup program and a custom default configuration for SnagIt, to be automatically installed on your users machines. Note: The Enterprise Installation process is used only in SnagIt version and earlier. Please consult the TechSmith Web Site for installation instructions for the latest versions of SnagIt. Before You Get Started SnagIt is the premier application for all of your organization s screen capture needs. If you are unfamiliar with SnagIt s key features, including profiles and hotkeys, we recommend that you install SnagIt and take some time becoming comfortable with it. Also, review the product orientation materials that are available in the Getting Started Guide and on the TechSmith Web site ( Doing this will help you decide the how to best customize SnagIt s installation setup and default configuration for your intended users. Overview of the Enterprise Installation Process The Enterprise Installation process can be summarized as follows. Each of these steps is described in detail in this document: 1. Enter the Enterprise Installation mode at the command line using the /admin switch. 2. Create your custom SnagIt setup. In this step, you ll customize the setup program for your users. 3. Create your custom SnagIt configuration. This step allows you to customize SnagIt s default options for all of your users. 4. Complete the setup. In this step, you ll decide where your setup, and the shortcut to run that setup, will be located for user access. Begin the Enterprise Installation process with Entering the Enterprise Installation Mode on page 4. 3

Entering the Enterprise Installation Mode When you purchase SnagIt, you receive a SnagIt setup (i.e., setup.exe) either on CD-ROM or by downloading it from the TechSmith Web site. To initiate the Enterprise Installation mode, simply move the SnagIt setup to a convenient location on your machine or network, and then follow the process outlined in this section. Initiating the Enterprise Installation Mode The process for initiating the Enterprise Installation mode is as follows: 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run. The Run dialog box appears. 2. In the Run dialog box, click Browse. 3. In the Browse dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains the SnagIt setup.exe. 4. Select the SnagIt setup.exe, and then click Open. 5. Add the /admin command-line option to the end of the path to the setup file. For example: "C:\Documents and Settings\SnagIt\Setup_SnagIt.exe" /admin 6. Click OK. This will bring up the About SnagIt Enterprise Installation screen. This screen describes the three-step installation process. Read through the process, and then choose Next. 4

Continue the process with Creating your Custom Setup on page 6. 5

Creating your Custom Setup Once you have initiated the Enterprise Installation mode, the SnagIt Enterprise Install Mode Wizard will help you through the process of creating your customized setup. Through this process, you can set default installation options for your users. SnagIt add-ins make it easy to capture anything on your screen from within your familiar desktop working environment. For more information about SnagIt Add-Ins, see the SnagIt Add-Ins User s Guide on TechSmith s Web site. If you choose not to enable any or all of the add-ins, the add-in files are still placed on the machine during the installation process. When disabled, these very small files remain inactive until they are enabled, either by selecting the add-in-specific options during a subsequent SnagIt install process or through the add-in options found within SnagIt. Note: Add-ins may not be available for selection in this dialog if the corresponding applications are not installed on the machine being used to create the setup. 12 Creating Your Custom Default Configuration When you have finished customizing your setup, the next step is to create a custom SnagIt configuration for your users. This configuration will contain the program-specific options that you select for your users. These include profiles, preferences, program settings, hotkeys, etc. To create the custom configuration, SnagIt will open during setup, and you will make the changes to profiles, preferences, etc. Exit SnagIt when finished and your selections will be saved in a file. This custom configuration will be loaded into SnagIt during installation. A custom configuration is an ideal way to be sure that all of your organization s users are using the same profiles, preferences, etc, that you have selected for them in advance. Once you ve clicked Next at the Start Installation Screen in the last step, the Step 2: Configure SnagIt screen will appear. Be sure to read the instructions given on this screen before proceeding. To create a custom default configuration 1. Choose OK. SnagIt will launch. 2. Within SnagIt, make any changes to profiles and settings (including preferences, hotkeys, etc.) that you want to automatically become part of your users default SnagIt configuration. Note: The changes you make to SnagIt s configuration during this step will be saved in a registry file called SNAGIT.REG. When the user launches the SnagIt setup you ve created, it will automatically read the SNAGIT. REG file and use it to determine the default configuration of the user s copy of SnagIt. 3. When you are finished customizing SnagIt s configuration, choose File > Exit. 4. The configuration settings are automatically saved in the SNAGIT.REG file. 12

Important Note: The REGINFO.TXT file will also appear on screen at this time. This file contains your software key. Print this file and save it. Continue with Completing the Setup on page

Completing the Setup After you have exited SnagIt in the previous step, the Step 3: Select Network Install Point screen appears. In this step, you will designate where the customized setup that you just created should be placed for user access. The custom configuration file (SNAGIT.REG) should be placed in the same location. 1. Specify a path to the network location where you want your customized SnagIt setup and settings file to be copied. Use the scrolling and dropdown directory lists to find the desired location. Be sure to choose the directory you want users to access to install SnagIt. 2. Choose OK. Your setup is complete. 3. On the final screen that appears, choose Finish. Final Steps Once the enterprise installation process is complete, four files will have been automatically copied to the location specified in Step 3. These files are: Setup_SnagIt.exe The SnagIt setup program. The filename may vary depending on the source of the file. INSTVAR.TXT Custom setup options SNAGIT.REG Custom default application settings SetupSnagIt.lnk Shortcut that runs the setup program Now you can direct your users to the directory containing these files and instruct them to double-click on the SnagIt setup shortcut (i.e., SetupSnagIt.lnk) to execute the setup program. When they use the shortcut, SnagIt will be installed as you have configured it onto the user s local machine. 14

Note: Double-clicking the SnagIt setup rather than the shortcut will install SnagIt with the default settings. Installing Locally from CD You can also create a custom installation CD by placing the setup and shortcut along with the SNAGIT.REG and INSTVAR.TXT files on the CD-ROM. Then, users can double-click on the shortcut to run the custom installation setup on their local machine. 15

Silent Installation of SnagIt Overview Silent installations are commonly used to simplify the process of installing or upgrading software on multiple machines within an organization. SnagIt s silent installation option installs SnagIt onto a user s machine without requiring any additional interaction from you or the user. For example, with silent installation, users do not have to choose the installation options or designate the folder into which to install the program. There are two ways to run a silent installation: 1) Custom. You can install SnagIt with custom setup options that you have established in an installer variables text file (INSTVAR.TXT). Each of the options presented on-screen during a regular installation is represented by a variable within the INSTVAR.TXT file. Simply customize the installation by selecting or disabling any of the available options. For more information, see Installer Variables File Entries on page 17. 2) Default. If no installer variable file exists, the /S switch will silently run SnagIt s setup using the default setup options. To Execute a Silent Installation of SnagIt 1. Locate the INSTVAR.TXT file, which should be in the same folder as the custom SnagIt setup. Note: If the installer variable file you want to use for silent installation is not located in the same directory as the installation Setup.exe, you will need to specify the path to the file on the command line. 2. Choose Windows Start > Run. 3. In the Browse dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains the SnagIt setup. 4. Select the SnagIt setup, and then click Open. 5. To run a silent installation with custom settings, add the /S /M=INSTVAR.TXT command-line options to the end of the path to the setup file. For example: "H:\SnagIt Enterprise Install\Setup_SnagIt.exe" /S /M=instvar.txt Note: If no installer variable file (INSTVAR.TXT) exists, the /S switch will still silently run SnagIt s setup with the default setup options. 6. Click OK. The /S /M=INSTVAR.TXT switches will silently run SnagIt s setup with the custom setup options that you ve included in the file. Editing the Setup Shortcut to Automatically Execute Silent Installation If you used the Enterprise Installation process described in the previous section, one result of that process was a shortcut to your custom SnagIt setup. You can now edit that shortcut to silently install your custom setup when double-clicked. 16

To edit the shortcut: 1) Right-click on the shortcut, and select Properties from the menu that appears: 2) In the Properties dialog that appears, choose the Shortcut tab: 3) In the Target field, add the /s switch to the command line. 4) Click OK. Installer Variables File Entries When you customize the SnagIt installation setup, an Installer Variables file (INSTVAR.TXT) is created. This file contains variables for each of the options that appear on the installer screens during setup. For each of the variables, you can choose A to select the option or leave the line blank to deselect the option (toggle the option off ). If there are two options for the variable, leaving the line blank will select the alternative option (toggle between the options). 17

For example, setting DESKTOP_LINK=A will place a shortcut on the desktop. Alternatively, setting DESKTOP_LINK = will result in no desktop shortcut being created. The Installer Variables text file should contain the entries described in the following table. Option MAINDIR=$PROGRAM_FILES%\ TechSmith\SnagIt DESKTOP_LINK=A START_AUTO START_MINI INSTALL_ALLUSERS INST_STUDIO INST_PRINTER INST_WORD_ADDIN INST_PP_ADDIN INST_EXCEL_ADDIN INST_OUTLOOK_ADDIN INST_IE_ADDIN INST_FM_ADDIN START_NOW Description By default, use Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt as the main installation directory (this is usually C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt). Create a desktop shortcut for the SnagIt application. Automatically launch SnagIt when Windows launches. Always start SnagIt minimized to the task bar. Install the settings for this application for all users of this computer. Install the SnagIt Studio application. Install the SnagIt Printer capture driver. Install the Microsoft Word add-in. Install the PowerPoint add-in. Install the Excel add-in. Install the Outlook add-in. Install the Internet Explorer add-in. Install the FrameMaker add-in. Launch SnagIt immediately after installation is complete. 18

Exporting and Importing SnagIt Configuration Settings after Installation Overview The Enterprise Installation mode stores SnagIt s configuration settings in a registry file called SNAGIT.REG. During installation, the SnagIt setup program automatically imports the default configuration settings from this file (when the file is located in the same directory as the installation setup). However, the settings are only imported once, when the setup program first installs SnagIt. As a system administrator, you may occasionally want to make changes to that configuration and then import the new configuration into your users copies of SnagIt. This section describes how to use command-line options to export your new settings to the SNAGIT.REG file, and then how to import those settings from the SNAGIT.REG file back into the user s already installed SnagIt application. Your users can also use these command line switches any time to import or export settings. Exporting Program Settings to a File Use the following process to customize your configuration settings and export them to a SNAGIT.REG file: 1. Open SnagIt. Make any changes to the settings, profiles, hotkeys, etc. that you wish to have stored in the new SNAGIT.REG file. 2. Choose Windows Start > Run. 3. In the Browse dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains the SnagIt.exe. This is the folder in which SnagIt is installed. 4. Select the SnagIt.exe, and click Open. 5. Add the /e command-line switch to the end of the path. For example: "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagIt32.exe"/e [alternate file name] Note: Any alternate file name may be specified on the command line. SNAGIT.REG is only used of no alternate name is specified. 6. Click OK. The /e switch will export your configuration settings into the SNAGIT.REG file (or alternate file you have specified). Note: If you do not want to overwrite the SNAGIT.REG file that is currently located in the same folder as the SnagIt.exe, you will need to specify a location for the new registry file on the command line after the /e switch. For example: "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagIt32.exe"/e e:\snagit\[file name] Importing Program Settings after Installation You can use the following process to import your customized configuration settings into the SnagIt application: 1. Copy your customized SNAGIT.REG file in the same folder as the SnagIt application (SnagIt.exe). Note: If the registry file is not located in the same directory as the SnagIt.exe (or you want to change 19

the name of the registry file), you will need to specify the path and name of the registry file on the command line. For example: e:\snagit\snagit.reg 2. Choose Windows Start > Run. 3. In the Browse dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains the SnagIt.exe. 4. Select the SnagIt.exe, and then click Open. 5. Add the /d command-line option to the end of the path to the SnagIt program. For example: "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\SnagIt32.exe"/d [alternate file name] Note: Any alternate file name may be specified on the command line. SNAGIT.REG is only used of no alternate name is specified. 6. Click OK. The /d switch will import the new registry settings into SnagIt. 20
