2 Introduction Cognitive Radio Testbed 2011 is an industry project for TEKES Trial program by Nokia during 2011 Main target is to produce a cognitive radio coexistence testbed (IEEE ), cognitivity enablers and concepts/standards. The project is divided to three Work Packages (WP) Nokia is also contributing to/following several other TEKES Trial projects Main features of the implemented testbed are Co-existence of heterogeneous radio access technologies along the lines of ongoing IEEE standardization. Collection and publishing of bit rate related information. Visualization of the status and operation of the testbed. 2 Nokia 2012 CRT 2011 Results, JR

3 WP1 Concept Development (1/2) TV WS related standardization work First complete IEEE draft specification expected P3/2012 (later than original schedule) Following Nokia contributions: Main architecture according to Nokia proposal New pending proposals on co-existence discovery, coexistence manager signaling and interactions, co-existence decision algorithm and system overview Driving the white space adaption through af standard defining the TVWS utilization of WLAN systems ETSI Reconfigurable Radio Systems group work Engagement of the European Commission to the European TV WS work. Nokia had three successful accepted contributions to the working group.

4 WP1 Concept Development (2/2) WLAN offloading work: Improve the utilization of WLAN offloading from the consumer perspective. Speed-up the handover times from cellular network to the WLAN network. Contributed multiple solutions to IEEE ai (Fast initial link setup) improving the connection setup times of the WLAN system. This standard is still in development phase and it is too early to estimate how many contributions will end up to the final draft. Nevertheless, Nokia is having a good position in this standard with multiple contributions. Other WP1 has produced during 2011 IPR and a book chapter

Studying intelligent solutions to enable coexistence of LTE with co-located non-lte radios Developing time-domain simulation capability First results were contributed to 3GPP during 2H2011 Two papers produced. This work has been done in collaboration with Aalto University

8 WP3 Enablers (2/2) Developing a novel time domain RF simulator Capable of modeling typical resource allocations of state-of-the-art radio system such as LTE Taken into use in defining requirements for bands for 3GPP LTE specification In collaboration with Tampere University of Technology Portable implementation of signal processing To make software defined implementations of physical layer more attractive. Improved the maturity of the LLVM based compiler Two papers submitted The programming language and the tools are available for public beta through In collaboration with Atostek Oy.

9 Main objectives for CRT 2012 project Continue the work of CRT 2011 with 1. System development for cognitive radio testbed. This includes commercialization of results through standardization, e.g. IEEE, ETSI. 2. Application development for cognitive radio testbed. This includes connectivity optimization for mobile devices and WLAN coverage extension using TV WS based connection with WLAN hotspots. The testbed will also be maintained and updated. 3. Producing TV White Space radio in the form factor of a USB dongle. This made in collaboration with Finnish SME industry and the plan is to provide these for the research community to create new innovations with TV White Space. We also plan to launch a TV White Space test network in Otaniemi campus, in Espoo. 4. Finding solutions for performance portability in context of software defined radio. Enabling technologies including SW defined cognitive radio implementations, tunable RF-front-end, multicore computation architecture for cognitive radios and co-existence of radios in a terminal. 9 Nokia 2012 CRT 2011 Results, JR

10 TV White Space Radio testbed 2012 Extending CR Testbed with TV White Space (TV WS) radio. Target is to create an experimental TV WS network in Otaniemi campus (Espoo, Finland) for developing innovations and estimating the benefits of TV WS technologies for consumer. Consists of TV WS radio connected to a mobile device or a laptop with USB cable + a number of access points offering internet access. Planned to be available for partners in TEKES Trial program and to partners in European Institute of Technology (EIT). 10 Nokia 2012 CRT 2011 Results, JR

11 Summary 2011 the main effort has been on TV White Space co-existence testbed, concept development, standardization, Bandwidth Manager service, and radio enablers the testbed is extended with mobile TV White Space WLAN radios allowing real-life application and use case tests. We will also continue with system development, application development, performance portability and enabling technologies for Software Defined Radios (SDR).
