3 Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences an international and multidisciplinary university of applied sciences in the Greater Helsinki area Students can apply for the degree programmes commencing in the autumn of 2010 through the spring 2010 joint application process. This guide presents both the Finnish- and English-language Bachelor s degree programmes conducted as daytime studies. In the spring joint application, Metropolia offers 49 Bachelor s degree programmes, nine of which are taught in English. There are also 14 Master s degree programmes, two of which are taught in English and also Bachelor s degree programme conducted as evening/multiform studies and Specialisation Studies. These degree programmes are presented in Continuing Education: Applicant s Guide There are four fields of study: Culture; Business and Administration; Health Care and Social Services; and Technology and Transport, some of which also offer teaching in English. It takes 3.5 to 4.5 years to graduate. Studies are measured in units called credit points, which are based on the amount of work put in. An average academic year consists of 1,600 hours of work, which is equivalent to 60 credit points. Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences utilises the facilities, laboratories and equipment in its various locations, offering its students an innovative, modern and high-quality learning environment. The students engage in joint working life and business projects across degree programmes in the capital region, the benefit being the large number of training opportunities and jobs. 6 Degree Programme in European Business Administration Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) The EBA is a distinctive double-degree programme taught entirely in English and run in conjunction with partner universities in the UK, Austria and the Netherlands. Students will select their partner university during the first year of their studies and will do their year abroad either in their second or third year. Students will graduate with two degrees, the Finnish BBA and Bachelor from the partner university. The programme aims to prepare students for a career in international business. They are taught key aspects of marketing, finance, human resource management and information technology by means of stimulating learning methods in a dynamic and truly international atmosphere. Students receive guidance and personal support from native English speaking lecturers from a variety of cultural and professional backgrounds. 7 Degree Programme in European Management Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) The EM is a double-degree programme run in conjunction with partner universities in the UK, France, Germany and Spain. Graduates of the programme receive both the Finnish BBA and degree from our partner university. The teaching is held in English, preparing the students for the challenges of the global business environment. The first two years of studies are held in Finland and the student gains core competencies in marketing, finance, human resource management and information technology. While in Finland, students receive guidance and support from native English-speaking lecturers from a variety of cultural and professional backgrounds. 8 Degree Programme in International Business and Logistics Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Business today is global. To prepare for a career in global business, the student must gain knowledge, experience and competence in core skills and complement them with specialised expertise. After instruction in fundamental business subjects, the students will get the opportunity to apply their skills in an integrated manner, covering both strategic and operational management areas in activities such as purchasing, logistics management, project management and legal aspects of business. This encompasses generic business competencies including quality control and the incorporation of environmental and ethical factors. Students are strongly encouraged to complete part of their studies abroad. This can be study exchange or/ and work placement. After graduation, students can work within industrial, commercial or public sector organisations and the job title may be e.g. Purchasing Assistant, Buyer, and Import/Export Assistant. 11 Degree Programme in Nursing Bachelor of Health Care The aim is to educate culturally competent registered ed nurses. Upon the completion of the programme, the student will possess skills to deliver nursing and health care services to meet the needs of clients with various cultural backgrounds in Finland and abroad, in national and international, governmental and non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, the graduates will be ready to work in multinational and multidisciplinary teams in various parts of the world. 12 Degree Programme in Social Services Bachelor of Social Services As a Bachelor of Social Services you are capable of supporting your clients daily lives by using social pedagogical working methods, and to express yourself clearly and be creative. Empowerment is an essential approach in this work. You are able to work in a multicultural environment both in Finnish and English. As a Bachelor of Social Services you are qualified to work with various client groups of all ages. Your work can be linked for example with child protection, family and youth work, elderly care, early childhood education, disabilities, substance abuse as well as mental health. Multicultural working skills are your strengths. Your work may consist of supervision, guidance, coordination of services and managerial work in communities or in a residential setting. 14 Degree Programme in Electronics Bachelor of Engineering The goal of the Degree Programme in Electronics is to educate qualified engineers specialised in either electronics design or sensor systems. Studying electronics in a truly multicultural environment in Metropolia gives you a perfect start towards an international career in this challenging and fastly developing field. 15 Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering Bachelor of Engineering The basis of your knowledge is the understanding of natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry. You understand the importance of international communication, business and cultural skills. Even more importantly, you understand the cause of pollution and the preventative actions available to minimise its impact. After the completions of your studies, you will have excellent knowledge in Environmental Engineering and Technology. You are also aware of the technologies related to biomass, solar and wind energy. As an Environmental Engineer you will possess special knowledge of overall solutions related to Environmental Engineering, and skills to operate and communicate internationally. Your cross-engineering thinking links you extensively to Environmental Engineer from the technology perspective. You have a good overview of the prevention of pollution and the corrective actions of environmental protection. 17 Degree Programme in Media Engineering Bachelor of Engineering As a Media Engineering graduate, you will have the knowledge and skills to work in media production and management: digital printing, multimedia and Internet, e-commerce, audiovisual technology, digital television, mobile media etc. You will have good skills in media technology, computing, and data communications and basic knowledge and skills in multimedia-related design, production and business subjects. You will work with media content and services: information, education, news, entertainment, marketing and advertising. You will have a career in a media company, a software house, or an electronic documentation and publishing company. You can work as an interactive TV and video producer, with a telecommunication service provider or in an open and distance learning institution. 18 Application Instructions The Finnish professionally oriented higher education institutions either use the English translation Polytechnic or University of Applied Sciences when referring to themselves. We use the abbreviation UAS for University of Applied Sciences. Application to Finnish Bachelor s Degree Programmes conducted in English (daytime studies) at Polytechnics/UASs takes place through a nationwide online joint application system. Applicants can fill in only one application per application period but they can apply for up to four (4) different degree programmes by using the same form. ADMISSION CRITERIA The Rectors Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (Ammattikorkeakoulujen rehtorineuvosto, ARENE) has given a Recommendation on Student Admission Criteria, which applies to the selection/admission process of Finnish Polytechnics/ UASs Bachelor s Degree programmes in the joint application system. The recommendation can be found at => Application Practicalities. Polytechnics/UASs decide on their own student admission criteria based on the recommendation. The recommendation is applied to Metropolia with the following exceptions: Degree Programme Electronics and Environmental Engineering European Business Administration and European Management Information Technology and Media Engineering Exceptions School performance points will not be considered but the student selections will be made solely on the basis of entrance examination results. The Degree Programme will use Metropolia s own entrance examination for European Business Administration and European Management Degree Programmes. Other entrance examination results will not be considered. The Entrance Examination s English language test is compulsory for all applicants; exemption is not possible. 19 Nursing Social Services In addition to the recommendation s eligibility requirements, applicants must have a minimum of basic level 2 in Finnish language skills (A2 in the Common European Framework). The Degree Programme will use Metropolia s own entrance examination for Nursing. Other entrance examination results will not be considered. The Entrance Examination s English language test is compulsory for all applicants; exemption is not possible. The entrance examination will contain a Finnish language test compulsory for all non-native applicants (unless the language of education is Finnish). In addition to the recommendation s eligibility requirements, applicants must have a minimum of basic level 2 in Finnish language skills (A2 in the Common European Framework). The following application instructions are only valid for Metropolia. Please note that the selection/admission processes may vary between different Polytechnics/UASs and degree programmes. Applicants must therefore check the admission criteria of each degree programme they are applying to. In order to apply successfully, it is crucial to follow the instructions exactly as given. All information in this guide is subject to change and therefore, applicants are recommended to check possible changes in the application instructions on Metropolia s web site at 19

20 APPLICATION PROCESS STEP BY STEP Metropolia has only one admission per year. The application period is always in the spring and the studies will always start in the autumn. The application period for studies starting in autumn 2010 is from 11 January 2010 to 12 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time (+ 2 hrs GMT). 1. Check the nationwide education offering at => Degree Programmes. 2. Choose 1-4 degree programmes to which you want to apply. Please note that applicants can fill in only one application per application period! 3. Decide your order of preference for the degree programmes. Please note that this order defines the degree programme where the applicant will be admitted and therefore, it is absolutely crucial this order reflects your true wishes! 4. Check the eligibility requirements and application instructions of each degree programme before your start the application process because the requirements/instructions may vary between the degree programmes. 5. Have all the required certificates with you when you fill in your application because the joint application system will ask you to give information regarding your educational background. 6. Fill in and send the online application at by 12 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. The application service guides and helps you to fill in the application form. Make sure that all the information you have given is true and correct before sending the application. Wrong or false information may cause major problems in the application process! 7. Print a copy of the application form for yourself for future reference and memorize your application number as you will need it in order to identify yourself during the application process. 8. Take copies of all the required certificate copies (plain photocopies are enough except with TOEFL) and write your applicant number on each certificate copy. Deliver all the required certificate copies to the Admissions Office of the polytechnic/uas of your first choice so that they are received by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. Late certificate copies will not be accepted. Please note that certificate copies will not be returned to applicants. Never send any original documents (certificates or their translations)! 9. Keep your contact information always up to date, because otherwise the Admissions Office will not be able to reach you, which in the worst case may result in your application being rejected. Check your frequently in case the Admissions Office should need to contact you, and wait patiently for the eligibility decision, which will be posted to you in mid March. 10. If you want to change your application data, the Admissions Office of your first-choice polytechnic/uas. The order of preference chosen in the application is binding and cannot be altered after the application deadline. Please remember to inform your applicant number when contacting the Admissions Office. 20

21 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Some polytechnic/uass use discretionary admission if the skills and knowledge of an ineligible applicant are sufficient. However, Metropolia does not, which means that if an applicant does not meet all the eligibility requirements, his or her application will be rejected with no exception. The eligibility decision will be made by the first-option polytechnic/uas on behalf of all the application options (unless the polytechnic/uas uses discretionary admission). All applicants who have demonstrated their eligibility in the required way will be invited to the entrance examination(s). There are three requirements that applicants must fulfil in order to be eligible to apply: 1. Basic education requirement (all applicants): Applicants must have a degree/qualification, which gives eligibility for higher education in the awarding country (normally a general or vocational upper secondary level certificate awarded after 12 years of schooling). Please note that it is not possible to apply with a higher education degree (e.g. Bachelor s or Master s Degree). More information can be found e.g. at => Application Practicalities => Eligibility or at Only final certificates will be accepted. Statements of results, result slips, scratch cards, provisional or temporary certificates etc. are not considered to be final certificates and are therefore unacceptable. In West Africa, for example, it may take even several years to get the final certificate but it does not change the fact that the applicant is not eligible to apply before he or she is able to provide a copy of the final certificate when applying. Applicants applying with a non-finnish qualification (completed outside Finland), with a Finnish competence-based vocational qualification or with a Finnish Matriculation Examination completed before 1990 must deliver copies of their final certificates to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. However, this does not apply to EU/EEA citizens completing foreign qualification during the spring of application. Please read the more detailed instructions in chapter Required Certificates. 2. English language qualification requirement (non-eu/eea citizens only): One of the following English language qualifications is required from applicants who are non-eu/eea citizens and not applying with a qualification completed in Finland (only the qualifications below will be accepted): IELTS, minimum score academic level 6.0 ( TOEFL, minimum score 550 paper-based test / internet-based test ( Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency minimum skills level 4 in English ( => Mobility => Testing Language Skills) Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804). In addition, upper secondary school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or Bachelor s or Master s degree completed in English in one of these countries is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills (education completed outside the above-mentioned countries will not be accepted under any circumstances). The English language qualification must be delivered to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. Applicants are not required to send any certificates regarding their Finnish language skills when applying. In addition, all non-native applicants must participate in a Finnish language test during the entrance examination unless the language of their previous education is Finnish. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES Applicants are required to prove their eligibility with adequate certificate copies by the deadline; otherwise their applications will be automatically rejected. No exceptions can be made with this. Before sending certificate copies, the applicant must write his or her applicant number on each certificate copy. The education must have been completed by 3 August ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS Only those applicants, who have proved their eligibility as required will be invited to the entrance examination(s). Some Finnish polytechnics/uass co-operate by using the same entrance examination. This means that an entrance examination completed at one polytechnic/uas is accepted by another and if you are invited to the entrance examination of your first choice, your second option will also accept the result. Applicants will only be invited to the entrance examinations of their highest option in the same co-operating programme. A list of polytechnic/uas degree programmes that accept the results of each others entrance examination in the mentioned field of study can be found at => Application Practicalities => Selection or new students/entrance examinations => Co-operating degree programmes. 23

24 If a polytechnic/uas degree programme is not included in the list, it does not accept entrance examination results from any other polytechnic/uas, and the applicant has to attend the entrance examination of that polytechnic/uas. English language test exemption In Metropolia, the English language test exemptions are considered only in the Electronics and Environmental Engineering Degree Programmes! In other Metropolia s Degree Programmes the English language test is compulsory for all applicants. Applicants can be exempted from the English language test if they deliver one of the following English language qualifications (no other qualification will be accepted) to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. IELTS minimum score academic level 6.0 ( TOEFL minimum score 550 paper-based test/ internet-based test ( Finnish Matriculation Examination minimum grade C in the advanced level English Finnish IBexamination: minimum grade 4 in English Finnish Reifeprüfung examination: minimum grade 7 in English Finnish EB examination: minimum grade in English Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency minimum skills level 4 in English ( => Mobility => Testing Language Skills) Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804). In addition, upper secondary school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or Bachelor s or Master s degree completed in English in one of these countries is accepted as demonstration of sufficient English language skills (education completed outside the above-mentioned countries will not be accepted under any circumstances). PLEASE NOTE! Some applicants are required to supply an English language qualification in order to be eligible to apply. If such applicants decide to take the English language test, they will nevertheless be required to supply such language qualification. STUDENT SELECTIONS Applicants must pass all compulsory parts of the entrance examination in order to get admitted. Applicants who fail one of the exam s part cannot get admitted regardless of how well they did in the other parts. Student selections will be made based on applicants admissions points and preference option order. Admission points In the following degree programmes, 50% of the applicants will be admitted on the basis of the combined points for previous school performance and the entrance examination, and the other 50% on the basis of the entrance examination only: Nursing Social Services The maximum total of admission points is 100. When admitting on the basis of the combined points for previous school performance and the entrance examination, 0 30 points will be awarded for school performance and 0 70 points for the entrance examination.
