2 Admission Guide 2015 This guide is made to help the applicant get through the application process of the Bachelor s Program in International Business (also called BScBA Program) offered at the Aalto School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. NEW: Students accepted to the BScBA Program (from 2015 onwards) have an automatic study right to continue their studies in the Master s Programs at the Helsinki Campus after completing the Bachelor s Degree at the Mikkeli Campus. In this admission guide, the BScBA admission refers to both Bachelor s and Master s study rights. The online application form is available on the website: (opintopolku.fi in Finnish) during the application period January 7 27, 2015 (by 3:00 p.m.). Please note that the order of study options chosen by the applicant during the first application period in January cannot be altered during the second application period in March-April NOTE. There is a separate admission process for the Open University Track (please see section 2 for admission criteria and application deadline for these applications). This Admission Guide contains an unofficial translation of the admission process and criteria of the Bachelor s Program in International Business offered at the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. In the event that there is any inconsistency between this version and that written in Finnish, the official Finnish text version will prevail. All applicants to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business should carefully read this Admission Guide and the instructions on how to fill in the online application form. 4 1 Admission Process and Requirements The Aalto University School of Business Two Campuses Established in 2010, Aalto University is a new university with centuries of experience. It has been created by merging the Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology. Merging the three universities provides possibilities for multidisciplinary and strong education and research. The goal for the new university is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialized disciplines by For further information on Aalto University, please visit The Aalto University School of Business (Aalto BIZ) is the new name of the Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), which was founded in The Aalto University School of Business is an innovative and lively community of about 3,800 students and over 600 researchers, teachers and service personnel with two campuses in Helsinki and in Mikkeli. The Bachelor s Program in International Business (also called the BScBA Program), located at the Mikkeli campus, is one of the leading academic programs in Finland, offering cutting-edge approaches to business education in a unique learning environment. The program leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Business Administration, an officially accredited university degree in Finland. NEW: Students accepted to the program will get a study right to the Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration, so that the student first completes the Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration degree at the Mikkeli Campus and after graduating from Mikkeli, the student has an automatic study right to continue their studies in one of the Master s Programs at the Helsinki Campus. The students in the program all major in international business and the language of instruction is English. The BScBA Degree can be obtained in less than three years, due to the fast pace of the program. Most courses are taught by visiting faculty in the form of intensive three-week modules that run through the entire year. The academic year is comprised of fifteen modules. For each module, classes are scheduled for three hours a day, five days a week, for a total of 45 contact hours including examinations. All students are expected to attend courses on a full-time basis yearround. There are normally three short breaks during the academic year. International experience is ensured through a semester abroad in one of our many partner universities around the world. 5 1 Admission Process and Requirements Admission Process ) The joint online application system to Finnish higher education institutions (universities and polytechnics) is used for studies starting in fall Also, the applications to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business are sent through this joint online application system. The online application form is available on the website: (opintopolku.fi in Finnish) during the application period: January 7 27, 2015 (by 3:00 p.m., GMT +2:00 hrs). You can find the BScBA Program from the studyinfo.fi-portal by using Aalto University Mikkeli as your search. There is a separate schedule for delivering the requested attachments to the admissions office of Aalto University. Please see section How to apply for the BScBA Program in Mikkeli. 2) Open University Track Five (5) students can be accepted to the program based on their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate Aalto School of Business admission process for this Open University Track (both to Helsinki Campus and Mikkeli Campus) and the application period is March 17 April 9, Please see section 2.4 for more information on this admission. Please note that there are two separate application periods: during January 7-27, 2015 for programs taught in languages other than Finnish, like the BScBA Program, and for the Academy of Fine Arts, and during March 17 April 9, 2015 for programs taught in Finnish. Applicant can apply to a maximum of six (6) programs in order of the preference. Only the study place prioritized the highest to which the applicant s points are enough for admission will be offered. The same application form is used for both of the application periods. For example, if you apply to study business in the BScBA Program at the Mikkeli Campus as well as to other Bachelor s Programs taught in Finnish in Finland, remember to fill in the application for the BScBA Program already in January after which you can reopen the form to fulfill it later. Please note that it is not possible to submit an application to the BScBA Program during the second application period March 17 April 9, 2015, and the order of study options chosen by the applicant during the first application period in January cannot be altered during the second application period in March-April An applicant may accept only one study place in a degree program in Finland leading to a higher education degree during one academic term. The purpose is to ensure admission to higher education institutions for as many students as possible. 5

In addition, five (5) students can be accepted to the program based on their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate Aalto School of Business admission process for this Open University Track (both to Helsinki Campus and Mikkeli Campus). See section 2.4 for more information on this admission. Below you can find information on the admission groups, and in section 2, the full admission criteria is described for each admission group. Four types of high school diplomas earned in Finland or abroad are recognized in the admission process: 1. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate 2. International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) 3. Reifeprüfung Diploma (RP) 4. European Baccalaureate Diploma (EB) Students are accepted to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business through a highly selective process that consists of three admission groups. NOTE. An applicant must apply via one and only one admission track: I Applicants who have graduated with one of the types of high school diplomas listed above. The admission is based on points awarded for grades obtained while earning one of the four types of diplomas. II Applicants who have graduated with one of the types of high school diplomas listed above. The admission is based on test scores from the SAT Test. III Applicants without any of the types of high school diplomas listed above but who can demonstrate university eligibility. The admission is based on test scores from the SAT Test General Eligibility to Apply Every applicant must fulfill the formal eligibility requirement for admission to the Bachelor s studies defined in the Finnish University Law. An applicant can show this eligibility, for example, with such secondary education which gives an applicant eligibility for university studies in an applicant s own home country (e.g. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate, High School Diploma or its equivalent, International Baccalaureate Diploma, European Baccalaureate Diploma, Vocational College Diploma (minimum 3 years), Reifeprüfung Diploma, Community College Diploma equivalent to an Associate of Arts Degree or a University or College Diploma equivalent to a Bachelor s degree or higher). 6

7 1 Admission Process and Requirements How to Apply for the BScBA Program in Mikkeli The Bachelor s Program in International Business offered at the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus has its own unique admission process and criteria. The information below concerns the admission process for admission groups I- III. Please see section 2.4 for information on the Open University Track admission. The applications to the Bachelor s Program in International Business are sent through the joint online application system of Finnish higher education institutions. The application period is January 7 27, 2015 ( at 3:00 p.m., GMT +2:00 hrs). There is a separate schedule for delivering the requested attachments to Aalto University (see The requested attachments to the application later in this section). Please note that the application form will be available only after the application period begins (January 7, 2015). Applications which are submitted after the application deadline are not considered, thus, submit your application early enough. The applicant is solely responsible for meeting the application deadline. If the application does not contain the requested documents, the applicant may be removed from further consideration. You have the following options how to apply through the joint application system (please find also later in this section more information on the details for applying to the Bachelor s Program in International Business in Mikkeli): Option 1) The best and preferred option for the applicant who knows Finnish is to log on to the Applicants Online Service on the website: (opintopolku.fi in Finnish) and fill out the application form in the joint online application system. This option requires the use of your personal Finnish Internet banking codes, Finnish electronic ID-card or Finnish mobile certificate. In addition, you also need to have a Finnish social security number and an address. By using the Applicants Online Service, you can: transfer your preferred application options to the shortlist fill in and submit the online application during the application period check and make corrections to your application during the application period check your admission results accept a study place Option 2) You can also fill out the online application form in English or in Finnish through the joint online application system on (opintopolku.fi in Finnish) without logging onto the Applicants Online Service. Processing and sending the application form At (opintopolku.fi in Finnish), you can search for education programs and fill in the application form online. You can search for all degree-offering programs at Finnish higher education institutions (Search for study options). When filling in the application form, please note that you can list a maximum of six (6) application options. 7

8 1 Admission Process and Requirements 2015 Please note that it is not possible to submit an application to the BScBA Program during the second application period March 17 April 9, 2015, and the order of study options chosen by the applicant that is selected during the first application period in January cannot be altered during the second application period in March- April You can find the BScBA Program from the studyinfo.fi-portal by using Aalto University Mikkeli as your search. Students are formally admitted to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business in three separate admission groups (see sections Admission groups and Admission criteria 2015). All applicants must choose the right admission group (I-III). Each applicant can apply via one and only one admission track. NOTE. Applicants in admission groups II and III must provide the date of the SAT Test taken or to be taken. The test scores should be given per section (Writing, Mathematics, Critical Reading). If you give on the application form your user name and password to your College Board account, the Aalto University School of Business can try to print out your test report in case the official report has not reached the Aalto University School of Business by June 11, However, you must also request that the SAT Test score is submitted directly to the Aalto University School of Business by the testing authority (please see section 3 for more information on the SAT Test). After you have filled in the application form, you will be able to review it on the screen. You need to send the application form by pressing the application submission button no later than January 27, 2015 by 3:00 p.m. (GMT +2:00 hrs) in order to send the application form on time. You will receive a confirmation if the application has been submitted successfully. Please notice also that the joint online application system may not work properly during the last minutes if there are too many users. You should also print out your application form for later use. In the form, you can also see a list of the requested attachments you have to send to Aalto University and other universities and the correct delivery addresses. The requested attachments to the application Please notice that you only need to send certain attachments to Aalto University depending on your admission group. Therefore, it is also important that you choose your admission group correctly. All relevant attachments should be sent to the admission office of Aalto University by the given deadline (address below). Please find here below the requirements and deadlines for requested attachments. 8

9 1 Admission Process and Requirements The required attachments for applicants in all three admission groups: to be received at the latest by February 10, 2015, an official transcript or a copy of the diploma from upper secondary school, undergraduate, graduate and professional school attended*, except: Those applicants who have received their Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate after the year 1989 do not have to send a copy of their diploma as an attachment to the application form. The Aalto University School of Business gets this information from the universities applicant and enrolment register. Those applicants who have not received their final RP, IB or EB grades by February 10, 2015, must provide a copy of the diploma or an official final transcript showing the final grades as soon as they get them, but at the latest by July 10, Those applicants who are graduating in spring 2015 and applying in the admission group III must deliver a copy of the final diploma or another document given by the school proofing the expected graduation by June 4, In this case, a copy of the final diploma has to be delivered by July 17, * Please note that if the school grading system is unusual, a memorandum of explanation is required. All documents in languages other than Finnish or English must be accompanied by a certified translation into English 2. The required attachments for applicants in admission groups II and III: applicant must request that the test score report from the SAT Test be submitted directly to the Aalto University School of Business by the testing authority by June 11, To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved (from the same SAT Test) a score of at least 500 points from the test module Writing, and at least a total of 1050 points from the two test modules: Critical Reading and Mathematics. Please note that the test scores mentioned above are the minimum requirements to be eligible for the admission process, but they do not yet guarantee the acceptance to the program. To be considered, an SAT Test score report must be submitted from a test taken after January 1, Aalto University School of Business must receive the test score reports directly from the test organizer no later than June 11, Aalto University School of Business code is If you give on the application form your user name and password to your College Board account, Aalto University School of Business can print out your test report in case the official report has not reached the Aalto University School of Business by June 11, Please see also section 3. If such misrepresentation is discovered after admission, it will result in immediate termination from the Aalto University School of Business Bachelor s Program in International Business in Mikkeli. 11 1 Admission Process and Requirements Important Dates January 7, 2015 Application period begins January 27, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. Closing date for applications (for applicants in admission groups I-III) February 10, 2015 An official final transcript or a copy of the diploma from any upper secondary school, undergraduate, graduate or professional school attended (showing the eligibility to study in a university) must be received by Aalto University by this date* March 17, 2015 Application period starts for the Open University Track (for the Open University Track applicants; please see section 2.4) April 9, 2015 Application period ends for the Open University Track June 4, 2015 For graduates of spring 2015 in the admission group III: deadline for delivering a copy of a foreign high school diploma or another document given by the school showing the final grades or expected graduation (more information for applicants in the admission group III on page 9) June 5, 2015 Deadline for delivering an official transcript of credits and grades earned at the Open University for applicants applying through the Open University Track June 11, 2015 The official SAT Test score report must be received by the Aalto University (code 1700) by this date July 3, 2015 Admission decisions made by the Aalto University School of Business are finalized at the latest by this date (with the exception of the 2015 IB, EB and RP applicants who will be notified later) July 10, 2015 Final IB, EB and RP grades 2015 must be received by Aalto University by this date (preferably earlier)** July 17, 2015 For students admitted to the Mikkeli BScBA Program at the latest by July 3, 2015, this is the last day to accept a study place *** July 17, 2015 For graduates of spring 2015 in the admission group III: deadline for delivering a copy of the final high school diploma August 24-28, 2015 Studies begin with mandatory orientation week Note: Finnish time is GMT +2:00 hrs * Those applicants who have received their Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate after the year 1989 do not have to send a copy of their diploma as an attachment to the application form. 12 1 Admission Process and Requirements 2015 *** Those admitted to the Mikkeli Bachelor s Program in International Business will get instructions on how to accept a study place when they get the acceptance letter from the Aalto University School of Business. 1.4 Admission Decisions and Registration The final decision on admission is made by the Dean of the Aalto University School of Business. The admission results will be published at the latest by July 3, 2015 (with the exception of the 2015 IB, EB and RP applicants, who will be notified later). Applicants will get instructions on how to accept the study place with the notification of acceptance. Students admitted to the Mikkeli BScBA Program at the latest by July 3, 2015 must confirm their enrolment by July 17, 2015 at15:00 hrs (3:00 pm, GMT + 2:00 hrs) at the latest. If the enrolment is not confirmed by the given time, the applicant loses his/her right to study at the Aalto University School of Business. The confirmation of acceptance is binding and irrevocable and it cannot be altered. Dissatisfied applicants may appeal an admission decision within 14 days of the publication of the results by submitting a written appeal to the university to the given address by the deadline. Your appeal must specify the subject matter of the appeal as well as the grounds for it. The appeal should contain the applicant s personal data and be signed either by the applicant or his/her authorized representative. A study right already granted may be cancelled if the applicant has provided the Aalto University School of Business with, in any way, inaccurate, false or misleading information. Note: Confirming enrolment in a university is binding and irrevocable and it cannot be altered. Do not confirm your enrolment until you are sure about your situation. However, do note that the confirmations arriving after the prescribed time limit cannot be considered and the applicant loses a study right already earned. The mandatory orientation week for the new students will be organized during week 35 (Aug 24-28, 2015). There will also be an unofficial program organized by the students during the weekend of Aug 29-A ug 30, The courses begin on Monday, August 31,

14 2 Admission Criteria 2015 In the year 2015, 80 students will be accepted to the Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus, Bachelor s Program in International Business through a highly selective process that consists of three admission groups I-III with specific criteria for each group. An applicant must apply via one and only one admission track. In addition, five (5) students can be accepted to the program on the basis of their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate Aalto School of Business admission process for this Open University Track. See section 2.4 for information on the Open University Track admission. Please see also section 1 for information on the admission process, how to apply for the Mikkeli BScBA Program in 2015, and what attachments the applicant needs to send to Aalto University. 2.1 Admission Group I 45 new students are admitted via this admission track. Applicants in this admission group must have one of the four types of high school diplomas earned in Finland or abroad: 1. Finnish Matriculation Examination Certificate 2. International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) 3. Reifeprüfung Diploma (RP) 4. European Baccalaureate Diploma (EB) The admission is based on points awarded for grades obtained while earning one of the four types of diplomas, Points will be given as specified in section Matriculation exams. Should the total score of two or more applicants equal, the following criteria will be used. If there is more than one applicant with the same total score in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from English exam will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from Mathematics exam will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant in place 45, the applicant who receives the best score from a language exam other than English will be admitted. If there is still more than one applicant with the same score in place 45, all these applicants will be admitted. If an applicant is offered a study place, but declines admission, the next applicant on the reserve list of this admission group is admitted. If an applicant registers as a non-attending student, the next applicant on the reserve list may be admitted. 14

15 2 Admission Criteria 2015 Matriculation Exams The points for the applicant in admission group I will be calculated as presented below. The maximum number of points that can be earned is 42. One of them has to be mathematics exam and one of them has to be a language exam. If less than 10 applicants would be admitted via this admission group, the rest of the study places will be given to applicants from the admission group I according to the selection criteria in the admission group I. Admission group III is for applicants who have not earned any of the types of high school diplomas listed below, but who can demonstrate university eligibility (see section 1.2): 1. If an applicant is offered a study place, but declines admission, the next applicant on the reserve list of this admission group is admitted. If less than 25 applicants would be admitted via this admission group, the rest of the study places will be given to applicants from the admission group I according to the selection criteria in the admission group I. If an applicant registers as a non-attending student, the next applicant on the reserve list may be admitted. 18

19 2 Admission Criteria Open University Track Admission Five (5) new students can be admitted to the program on the basis of their studies completed in the Open University. There is a separate admission process for the Open University Track (both to Helsinki Campus and Mikkeli Campus) and the application period is March 17 April 9, The application form will be available during the application period on the website of (opintopolku.fi in Finnish). This admission track is for applicants who 1) have earned 60 open university credits from the courses listed on the next page by June 5, 2015 with a cumulative GPA equivalent to at least 3,0 on the Aalto University School of Business grading scale. The courses are part of the required courses of the B.Sc. degree of the Aalto University School of Business; and 2) have received passing grades for studies amounting to no less than 36 of the 60 Open University credits described above in which the language of instruction was English. NOTE. This admission quota is not an option for students who have already earned a higher education degree or who have a valid right to study towards a degree at a university, at the National Defence University or at a polytechnic.
