2 Rajasthan Land of the Rajput Kings Overview This 18-day tour takes in the highlights of Rajasthan the land of the great Rajput kings who are renowned across India as warriors and champions of the Hindu faith. From the great metropolis of Delhi and its rich history under centuries of conquest and foreign rule, we head to Agra, home to that most glorious of monuments, the fabled Taj Mahal. Then on to Rajasthan s capital, the pink city of Jaipur and the golden palace of Samode, set in the hills outside Jaipur and our home for a tour highlight the greatest Indian festival of lights Diwali. We then proceed to Jodhpur, a desert town nestled beneath the great Mehrangarh Fort of the Marwari kings. From here to the fairytale town on the great Pichola Lake Udaipur, a stay at the world famous Lake Palace Hotel is an experience never to be forgotten. We conclude our Indian experience with a visit to Mumbai, gateway to old British India and the modern nation s economic capital. This tour offers the very best that India has to offer the great deserts of Rajasthan, palace forts, historic cities and towns and a sense of what is quintessentially India. Saturday October 22 Arrive Delhi Flights depart Australian cities during the day arriving in Delhi, late on Saturday night. Passengers booking their flights through Academy Travel, to commence the tour today, will be transferred to the group hotel. Overnight Delhi Sunday October 23 Old Delhi After a morning welcome meeting in the hotel we cross into the old city of Delhi to visit to great Red Fort (Lal Qila), built by Shah Jahan and home of the Mughal rulers until the Great Mutiny of The fort is named for its large red sandstone defensive walls that now house several museums. Most of the fort s treasures were looted and the gardens destroyed to make way for the British Army barracks, however a few examples of beautiful carving, inlay and gilding can be seen in the Diwan-I Khas where the emperor held court from the gilded peacock throne. After a break for lunch we take a rickshaw ride through the narrow alleys of the old city, regrouping at the famed Jama Masjid Mosque. Completed in 1656 by Shah Jahan the mosque took 5000 workers six years to construct. It is the largest mosque in India with the courtyard able to accommodate 25,000 worshippers. We return to the hotel before gathering for a welcome dinner this evening. Overnight Delhi (B, L, D) Monday October 24 New Delhi Today we look at New Delhi and the role that it played in the Indian independence movement. We will stop to see the great work of British architects Edwin Landseer Lutyens and Herbert Baker who designed the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan, originally the Viceroy s residence and seat of power of the British in India from It is now the official residence of the Indian president. We also spend time at Birla House, the site of Gandhi s assassination and now a memorial to the iconic leader before moving on to Teen Murti, the former home of Jawaharlal Nehru, India s first president. It is now a wonderful museum and library. This evening is at leisure. Overnight Delhi (B, L) Tuesday October 25 To Agra An early start today as we depart by coach for the 204km drive to Agra, the city made famous for the Taj Mahal. The journey takes approximately three to four hours and Judy will give a talk about the coming of the Mughals to India and Shah Jahan and the building of the Taj Mahal. 5 . emperor Akbar and centre of India s power for centuries. The structure took over 4,000 workers eight years to build. Behind the fort s formidable walls we wander through lovely palace apartments, gardens and audience halls evoking the splendours of a bygone era. It has a rich history as Mughal India s capital and was besieged by the British during the 1857 Mutiny. Overnight Agra (B, L) Wednesday October 26 The Taj Majal We rise before dawn in order to arrive at the famed Taj Mahal for its sunrise opening. This is the best time to visit as the crowds are far less pervasive and the light is usually soft and beautiful for photography. One of the most ethereal of buildings, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his queen and completed in 1653, it is an extraordinary monument to love and power. After lunch in a local restaurant the remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight Agra (B, L, D) Thursday October 27 Fatehpur Sikri Departing Agra we drive for approximately an hour to Fatehpur Sikri, the 'City of Victory'. The emperor Akbar spent fourteen years planning and constructing the magnificent walled city but by 1585, shortly after its completion, he had abandoned the site and moved his capitol to Lahore. With its blend of Persian and Indian architectural influences, this perfect ghost city is one of the best preserved examples of Mughal architecture in India. We explore the palace complex and see the Jama Masjid, the huge congregational mosque which could accommodate up to 10,000 faithful. After a break for lunch we continue for about 200 kilometres to Jaipur. Dinner tonight is in our hotel. We then continue to the wonderful City Palace, built by the Rajput Maharajah Jai Singh in the early 18th century. The palace museum houses a stunning collection of textiles, artefacts, armoury and Indian miniature paintings. From here the skills and knowledge of the Indian craftsmen is further reflected in the Jantar Mantar observatory, begun by Jai Singh in 1728 and one the best of its kind in the world. The scale and accuracy of each structure is extraordinary and a unique memory of this city. Overnight Jaipur (B, L, D) Saturday October 29 Amer Fort Today we head out of Jaipur to the old fortress of Amer, the former seat of the Jaipuri Rajputs, spectacularly sited on a hillside overlooking a lake. Inside the fort we wander through the four sections of the palace each with its own courtyard and entrance. The Maharajah s apartments in the third courtyard are the jewel in the crown, featuring the sparkling Hall of Mirrors

6 Rajasthan Land of the Rajput Kings or Sheesh Mahal. We also visit the nearby Anokhi Heritage Museum to see the beautifully displayed collection of old textiles and wares. Tucked away in the hills outside Jaipur, Samode Palace has been host to royalty, artists and fortunate travellers for decades. A splendid example of regal Indo- Saracenic architecture, the palace combines the best of Indian and Mughal styles. The 475-year-old palace is a celebration of all things Rajput and is a feast for all the senses. Diwali is the "festival of lights", an ancient Hindu festival celebrated annually in the autumn. It is one of the largest and most joyous festivals in India, spiritually signifying the victory of light over darkness or the triumph of good over evil. Diwali is characterised by the thousands of lamps and lights shining on rooftops, outside doors and windows and around temples and other buildings. Before Diwali, Indians clean and decorate their homes and offices and purchase new clothes, wearing their best outfits on the night of the festival. After prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity there are fireworks followed by a family feast with gifts exchanged between family and friends. The celebrations at Samode Palace are particularly special and we are privileged to be able to share this celebration with them. Overnight Samode (B, L, D) Monday October 31 Drive to Pushkar Today we travel 185km to Pushkar, one of the five sacred Hindu pilgrimage towns which every Hindu should visit at least once in their lifetime. The town is nestled around a holy lake, said to have appeared when Brahma, the Hindu creator god, dropped a lotus flower. We visit the bathing ghats around the lake, including Gandhi Ghat where the Mahatma s ashes were scattered. We then visit Pushkar s famous Brahma Temple, one of only a handful of shrines in the world dedicated to the Hindu deity. The present temple structure dates from the 14th century and is built from marble and stone topped, with distinct a red spire on the roof and the hans (bird motif) of Brahma over the entranceway. Dinner is in our hotel this evening. Overnight Pushkar (B, L, D) Tuesday November 1 Drive to Jodhpur A three-hour journey across the Thar Desert brings us to Jodhpur, known as the Blue City. The old city lies at the base of the Mehrangarh Fort and comprises a maze of blue cube houses, signifying a Brahmin residence, and spreads almost 10kms out to the city walls. Within the walls, the city is

7 a labyrinth of winding, medieval streets, which seem to head in circles and are heady with incense, roses and spices, with bazaars selling everything from sitars to silk. After lunch and checking into our hotel, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight Jodhpur (B, L) Wednesday November 2 In Jodhpur This morning we visit the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, built in the 16th century to repel attacks from neighbouring Rajput kings. This spectacular fort built around 1460, rises 120m from the rocky hill above Jodhpur s skyline and is fortified by 36m-high battlements carved from the rock. Inside the stone latticed courtyards and halls that formed the palace is one of India s finest museums and a superb example of Rajput architecture. After a break for lunch we head to the museum at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, which focuses on the history of the Jodhpur Royal family. The current royal incumbent, Gaj Singh II, still lives in part of the building. Built in 1929, the 365-room edifice of sandstone and marble was designed by the British architect Henry Lanchester for Maharaja Umaid Singh, and reflects the Indo-deco or beaux arts style of architecture. Overnight Jodhpur (B, L, D) Thursday November 3 In Jodhpur Today is essentially at leisure but Judy will be on hand to guide you through the Jodhpur bazaar as you hunt for some traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts, such as leather and textiles. We may perhaps also see some artisans making the famed Rajasthani dhurries beautifully woven cotton carpets. Overnight Jodhpur (B) Friday November 4 Drive to Udaipur The journey to Udaipur today takes us a distance of 265kms and should take six hours, with rest stops and a break for lunch on the way. Udaipur is home to the great Mewar dynasty that prides itself on being the only Rajput kingdom that did not allow any of its daughters to marry into the Mughal court. Upon arrival into Udaipur we check into the magnificent Lake Palace hotel built between under the direction of the Maharana Jagat Singh II (62nd successor to the royal dynasty of Mewar) as a royal summer palace. It was initially called Jagniwas or Jan Niwas after its founder. This evening is free to simply relax and luxuriate in the surroundings of this beautiful hotel. Overnight Udaipur (B, L) Saturday November 5 In Udaipur A leisurely breakfast today, followed by a visit to the nearby City Palace Museum, built over a period of nearly 400 years by several kings of the dynasty, starting with the Maharana Udai Singh as the capital of Images right: Mehrangarh Fort dominates the skyline over Jodhpur; Lily pads and water features are a serene feature of the elegant, Lake Palace Hotel; the sun sets over Lake Pichola, best viewed from the deck of the hotel s boat

8 Rajasthan Land of the Rajput Kings the Sisodia Rajput clan in It s a flamboyant fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. The Museum houses an incomparable collection of court paintings of the Mewar School that flourished from the 17th to the 20th centuries. We also visit the Jagdish Temple in central Udaipur. One of the largest and most famous temples in Udaipur, it was built in 1652 in Indo-Aryan architectural style by Maharana Jagat Singh, who ruled Udaipur from 1628 to The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Laxmi Narayan), the preserver of the Universe. This temple is three storeys tall and is an architectural wonder, comprising beautifully carved pillars, decorated ceilings, painted walls and lush halls. This evening is free to enjoy the sunset over Lake Pichola. Overnight Udaipur (B, L) Sunday November 6 To Bombay Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring more of the city or relaxing at the palace before our flight to Mumbai. The ghosts of the past are loud and clear here. For those who wish we also visit the Thieves Market, a remarkable place where you may find all manner of treasures amidst a sea of wares for sale. We conclude with a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum. Founded in the early 20th century and built in the Indosaracenic style of architecture, the museum incorporates elements of other styles of architecture such as the Mughal, Maratha and Jain, and is surrounded by a lovely garden of palm trees and formal flower beds. The museum houses approximately 50,000 exhibits of ancient Indian history, including artefacts from Indus Valley civilisation, and other ancient Indian relics from the time of the Guptas, Mauryas, Chalukyas and Rashtrakuta. This evening we gather in a local restaurant for our farewell dinner. Overnight Mumbai (B, L, D) Tuesday November 8 Departure The tour concludes after breakfast. To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Academy Travel s tours tend to feature extended walking tours and site visits, which require greater fitness than coach touring. Participation criteria for this tour This Grade Two tour is designed for people who lead active lives and can comfortably participate in up to five hours of physical activity per day on most days, including longer walking tours, challenging archaeological sites, climbing stairs, embarking and disembarking trains and/or boats, and a more demanding tour schedule with one night stops or several internal flights. WEATHER Out travel through Rajasthan occurs in the post monsoon season which extends from September to November. Average daytime temperatures are between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius with maximums sometimes reaching into the mid 30 s. Expect minimum temperatures of between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. There is little chance of rainfall during the post monsoon season.
