Target pests Control of pollen beetle and larvae of various Lepidopteran (caterpillar) species. Use rate Oilseed rape g/ha depending on pest pressure. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli 85g/ha. Protected cucumber, courgette, marrow, winter squash, pumpkin, melon, aubergine, tomato and pepper 12.5g/100 litre water. Water volume and spray quality Oilseed rape 200 litres of water/ha. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli 200 litres of water/ha. Protected cucumber, courgette, marrow, winter squash, pumpkin, melon, aubergine, tomato and pepper 100 litres of water/ha. When applying to protected crops, the maximum spray concentration must not exceed 12.5g product/100 litres of water. LERAP information Category C no buffer zone, no LERAP required. Minimum interval between sprays Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli 8-14 day intervals. 5 Restrictions Rumo must not be applied to any crop suffering from stress as a result of drought, waterlogging, low temperatures, pest or disease attack, nutrient or lime deficiency or other factors reducing crop growth. Good agricultural practice suggests that Rumo should be used when bees are less active (i.e. early morning or late evening). Following crops There are no following crop restrictions following an application of Rumo. General information Rumo is an oxadiazine (IRAC group 22) insecticide, which offers a unique mode of action. Rumo offers specific and effective pest control of pollen beetle (Meligethes spp.), including pyrethroid resistant forms and larvae of various Lepidopteran (caterpillar) species. All larval stages are controlled. Rumo offers general safety to beneficial insects. Activity is mainly by ingestion. The product also shows ovicidal efficacy against some species. Paralysis of the pest occurs within a few hours of exposure and results in cessation of movement and feeding. Optimum effectiveness takes 6-7 days and the product is persistent for 7-10 days. 264 Rumo insecticide

6 Directions for use Crops/dose/application and timing Rumo may be applied to the following crops: Oilseed rape Pest controlled: Rumo offers control of Pollen Beetle (Meligethes spp.) including pyrethroid resistant forms. Rumo stops pollen beetles feeding very quickly but the pollen beetles may take several days to die. Dose: Timing: 85 g/ha in 200 l/ha using boom sprayer. Apply when pollen beetles are present and reaching threshold levels. For effective control of Pollen Beetle, sprays should be applied at the green bud stage. Application may be made before GS 60 first flowers open growth stage. DuPont trials have shown that a rate of 62.5 g/ha of Rumo gives control of Pollen Beetle at least as good as competitor standards, eg neonicotinoids. For persistent control of high populations, DuPont would recommend 85 g/ha of Rumo (equivalent to approx 3 ha pack). For lower populations, or where 10 days persistence is not required, 62.5 g/ha of Rumo would be appropriate (equivalent to 4 ha pack). Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli Pests controlled: Cabbage whites (Pieris spp.), Cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae), Garden pebble moth (Evergestis forficalis), Cabbage leafroller (Clepsis spectrana) and Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella). Dose: Timing: 85 g/ha in 200 l/ha using boom sprayer. Treat when first caterpillars are detected or 7-10 days after trapping of the first adults in pheromone traps. Subsequent treatments may be applied at 8-14 day intervals as required. insecticide Rumo 265

7 Protected cucumber (gherkin), courgette (zucchini), marrow, winter squash, pumpkin, melon, aubergine, tomato and pepper Pests controlled: Golden twin-spot moth (Chrysodeixis chalcites), Beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua), Cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae), Tomato moth (Lacanobia oleracea), Silver y-moth (Autographa gamma) and other Plusia species and leafrollers. Dose: Timing: % w/v (12.5 g/100 L of water). Treat as soon as the first caterpillars (damage) are detected. Subsequent treatments may be applied at 8-14 day intervals as required. Note: Since there is only limited experience with this use, a test spraying should be performed to determine if the corresponding plant and/or variety tolerates the application. Limit to number of applications Rumo can only be applied once to a crop of oilseed rape. Rumo can be applied three times to a crop of cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli. Rumo can be applied six times per year to approved protected vegetables. Crop safety Rumo is safe to use on all recommended crops if used as directed. Honey Bees In accordance with good agricultural practice, avoid spraying when bees are actively foraging i.e. during the heat of the day. 266 Rumo insecticide

8 Resistance management When insecticides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years to control the same species in the same field, naturally-occurring resistant strains may survive a correctly applied treatment, propagate, and become dominant in that field. An insect can be resistant if the product applied under recommended conditions does not work well. Some insects have developed resistance to commercially available products. When resistance occurs, recommended rates fail to suppress the pest population below economic thresholds. It is important that the grower considers the following: Alternate the use of Rumo with products with a different mode of action than indoxacarb. Monitor insect populations and apply Rumo when locally determined economic thresholds are reached. Follow the directions for use as mentioned on this label, regarding dose, interval and optimum application timing. Growers should consult the IRAG website for further information on the current resistance management strategy for pollen beetle. Compatibility Refer to Compatibility appendix. Mixing Before using Rumo, make sure that the spraying equipment is clean. Rumo mixes easily with water, but the following mixing procedure should be followed: Quarter fill the spray tank with clean water, start the agitation and add the required quantity of Rumo directly to the tank without prior creaming. Continue agitation while topping up the tank and while spraying. Always add Rumo to the spray tank first. insecticide Rumo 267

9 Spray tank clean out Immediately after application, completely drain spray equipment. Thoroughly rinse sprayer and flush the hoses, boom and nozzles with clean water. Loosen and physically remove visible deposits. Remove and clean nozzles, screens and strainers. Flush the entire system with clean water. Take all necessary safety precautions when cleaning equipment. Do not clean near wells or water sources. Consult label tank clean up procedures for all tank-mix partners and be sure to use the most rigorous procedure recommended. If a box is left blank then a product from that column group cannot be included in the tank-mix. For example, mix 1 would allow EXPLICIT / RUMO / STEWARD to be used with Folicur.
