4 Appendix 1: Instructions for the seminar on the Swedish Neutrality The idea of Swedish neutrality is an important part of forming an understanding of Swedish politics in the 20 th century. It has also earned Sweden a reputation in the global community. However, the idea of Swedish neutrality is debated and discussed broadly by scholars. On April 27, we will have a two-hour seminar discussing the importance of Sweden s neutrality in the 20 th century. For this seminar, students are required to write a short essay and participate in the seminar. Literature: You are allowed to use any of the literature on the literature list and you are of course free to use any other literature or resources that you find relevant during this seminar. However, particular attention should be given to the texts listed below (see it as minimum reading list for the seminar): 1. Hadenius, Stig (1999). Pages: 25-28, 50,51, 55-70, 87-94, , , , , 2. Östling, Johan (2011). The Rise and Fall of Small-State Realism: Sweden and the Second World War 3. Almqvist, Kurt & Kay Glans (eds.) (2004). Pages: , , Short essay Each student shall write a short essay in preparation for the seminar. This paper should be pages long, written in good English in New Times Roman, 12 pt letters, and with a line spacing of one-and-a-half. your paper to the teacher holding the seminar latest 12:00 p.m. the day before the seminar (April 26; bjorn.lundberg@hist.lu.se). The essay shall use the course literature to discuss two of the following questions: 1.Discuss, using the course literature, the goals and motives behind Sweden s neutrality policy in the 20 th century. Did the aims and motives behind Swedish neutrality change with the shift to a doctrinal policy of non-alignment/neutrality in the Cold War? 2. Discuss the rise and fall of what Östling refers to as small state realism. In which context or contexts should we understand the shifts in the dominant narrative of World War II in Sweden? 3. Critically assess Hadenius representation of Swedish foreign policy during WWII. What do you think of the manner in which Hadenius represents Swedish foreign policy? Discuss this using Östling and other course literature (Almqvist, Kurt & Kay Glans, 2004). The essay shall end with a (one sentence) question or statement to further the discussion during the seminar. 4

5 Seminar The seminar will broadly discuss the topic of Swedish Neutrality in the 20 th century. The class will be divided into two groups. Group One will meet to Group Two will meet to A student whose surname (family name, last name) begins with A to L belongs to Group One. A student whose surname begins with M to Z belongs to Group Two. Longer essay Students that cannot attend the seminar are instead required to write an essay. The essay shall discuss two of the questions above in greater length. It shall be three to four pages long, written in good English in New Times Roman, 12 pt letters, with a line spacing of one-and-a-half. For this essay students are required to use footnotes or references. Stated otherwise: if you do not use them, you will not pass this assignment. Appendix 2: Instructions for the seminar on the Swedish Model Introduction The People's Home. The Welfare State. The Swedish Model. These terms are important for any understanding of 20 th century Swedish society. They are (or have been) important for the self-image of Sweden and have (allegedly) made Sweden internationally known as a model society or at least as a particular, perhaps even unique society. Yet their meanings are vague and partly overlapping. As many such words, they lack precision. This is what we will study in this seminar. On the 23 rd of May we will have a seminar discussing these concepts. For this seminar, students are required to write a short essay and participate in the seminar or, failing that, to write a longer essay. Literature You are allowed to use any of the literature on the literature list and you are of course free to use any other literature or resources that you find relevant. However, particular attention should be given to the texts listed below (see it as minimum reading list for the assignment): Andersson, Jenny (2009). Nordic Nostalgia and Nordic Light: the Swedish model as Utopia , Scandinavian Journal of History, 34:3, pp , 17 pp. Berggren Henrik & Trädgårdh, Lars (2010). Pippi Longstocking: The Autonomous Child and the Moral Logic of the Swedish Welfare State, in Mattsson, Helena & Wallenstein, Sven-Olov (eds.), Swedish Modernism: Architecture, Consumption and the Welfare State, pp , 14 pp. Bonoli, Giuliano (1997). Classifying Welfare States: a Two-dimension Approach, Journal of Social Policy, 26:3, pp , 22 pp. Esping-Andersen, Gøsta (1992, 2000). The Making of a Social Democratic Welfare State, in Misgeld, Klaus, Molin, Karl & Åmark, Klas (eds), Creating Social Democracy: A Century of the Social Democratic Labor Party in Sweden pp , 32 pp. Korpi, Walter and Joakim Palme (1998), The Paradox of Redistribution and Strategies of Equality: Welfare State Institution, Inequality, and Poverty in the Western Countries American Sociological Review, 63(5): Available online. 5

6 Lindbom, Anders (2001). Dismantling the Social Democratic Welfare Model? Has the Swedish Welfare State Lost its Defining Characteristics?, Scandinavian Political Studies, 24:3, pp , 23 pp. Lundberg, Urban & Åmark, Klas (2001), Social Rights and Social Security: The Swedish Welfare State, , Scandinavian Journal of History vol 26:3, pp , 20 pp. Stråth, Bo (2004). Nordic Modernity: Origins, trajectories and prospects, Thesis Eleven, vol 77, pp. 5-20, 16 pp. From Almqvist, Kurt & Glans Kay (eds.) (2004). The Swedish Success Story? read the following articles: Almqvist, Kurt & Glans Kay, Introduction, pp Magnusson, Lars, Adaption or over-confidence? Swedish economic history in the twentieth century, pp Torstendahl, Rolf, Sweden in a European perspective special path or mainstream?, pp Berman, Sheri, The folkhem was a success story, pp Short essay Each student shall write a short essay in preparation for the seminar. This paper should between one and two pages long, written in good English in New Times Roman, 12 pt letters, and with a line spacing of one-and-a-half. your paper to the teacher holding the seminar latest 12:00 p.m. the day before the seminar. The essay shall use the course literature to discuss one of the two topics below: 1) What are the essential traits of the welfare state that was built in Sweden from the 1930s onwards? Is this welfare state unique in comparison to other Western countries? Your answer should say something about how the Swedish welfare state is related to the concept of a Nordic or Scandinavian model. 2) The Swedish Model can be used with quite different meanings. What do the authors of the course literature seem to mean when they use the term? How do they define the Swedish Model? In what ways does the Swedish Model overlap (or not overlap) with the terms the People's Home and the Welfare State? The essay shall end with a (one sentence) question or statement to further the discussion during the seminar. Seminar The seminar will discuss the two topics given above. The essay shall discuss both topics above in greater length. It shall be three to four pages long, written in good English in New Times Roman, 12 pt letters, with a line spacing of one-and-a-half. For this essay students are required to use footnotes or references. Stated otherwise: if you do not use them, you will not pass this assignment. 6
