SUMMARY Background of the meeting: The aim of the ENCATC Thematic Area Performing Arts Management (TA PAM) is to steer up discussion and research on performing arts management and it education. The area was established in October 2011 in Helsinki within the annual ENCATC conference. The decision to meet again personally within the International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKANI/ENCOUNTER in spring 2012 was made there. Form of the meeting: The meeting was organised within the SETKANI/ENCOUNTER festival which is held by Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, Czech Republic (JAMU Brno) annually since The festival is fully produced by students from the Theatre Management Department under supervision of teachers who are also involved in TA PAM. The 5-day festival was launched on April 10 and its programme involved also 2-day workshop of TA PAM. Its participants took part both in the workshop and rich festival programme which included performance of theatre schools, off-programme activities and many informal meetings. Aim of the workshop: The main aim of the workshop was to discuss: profiles of participants arts management study programmes and their students teaching methods used in study programmes profile of an art manager Detailed programme of the workshop is in the part no. 3 of the final report. Participants of the workshop: The workshop was intended both for teachers and students from participating schools, particularly Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University of Arts in Belgrade (Serbia), Academy 2

3 of Performing Arts in Bratislava (Slovakia) and hosting school JAMU Brno. More than 20 participants took part in this event (6 teachers and 16 students). Name list you can find in the part no. 2 of the final report. Workshop day no. 1: The first day of workshop was held on April 11 and it was focused mainly on teaching methodology. Two papers were presented to teachers and students. Sanja Petricic from Faculty of Media and Communication in Belgrade raised a question on how to connect theory and practice in the field of arts management as part of the regular curriculum in higher education in her lecture. Anne Havukainen, head of the Degree Programme of Cultural Management in Mikkeli, presented the working based methodology used at their education of arts managers. Both topics were fully discussed both by teachers and students. PowerPoint presentations by Sanja Petricic and Anne Havukainen can be found at TA PAM blog: Workshop day no. 2: The second day programme was divided into two parts. Within the first part students and teachers discussed beforehand specified topics separately. Teachers compared their study programmes and discussed teaching methods, tools and references used in their lectures. Students formed three working groups and tried to suggest what the profile of art manager in the 21 st century is and if the courses in the field of arts management help them to prepare for their future jobs. In the second part of the workshop results and conclusions of teachers and students work were presented and discussed together. More detailed information from teachers discussion is in the part no. 4 of the final report. Summary from students part was prepared by students from Belgrade who shot and edited video from the workshop which can be found at TA PAM blog: Conclusions and outcomes: The workshop raised new questions concerning the thematic area topic (see the part no. 4 of the final report) and also many tasks for TA members. Besides given topics as profile of our study programmes, entrance examination requirements, what influences creation of our study programmes, teaching methods and references used in our lectures also possibilities of further cooperation were also discussed (teachers and students mobility, participation at activities organised by TA members, e.g. festivals and workshops). Outcomes and results from the meeting were published at the TA PAM blog. They include final report from the meeting, presentations of both lecturers from the 1 st day of the workshop, list of references used in lectures of participating teachers, some photos and also short video made by students from Belgrade. 3

Break Presentation and discussion led by Anne Havukainen, Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences General topic: Working based pedagogy Thursday, 12 April 2012, Focus: DISCUSSIONS ON PRE-SET TOPICS Round table discussion (separate sessions of teachers and students) Teachers group General topic: Let s compare our study programs (strength and weaknesses), make suggestions for some changes in the program and discuss our teaching methods (teaching tools, references). Discussion questions: 5

6 What are the profiles of our students? What are our goals and objectives when creating courses at our departments? Discuss our syllabus for courses (topics that are covered each week). What literature do we use for our classes (reference lists)? What factors should be considered for grading the student s work (student assessment)? Students groups General topic: What is the profile of art manager in the 21 century? Do courses in the field of art management help students to prepare for their future jobs? All students will be divided into three smaller groups Conclusion discussion Teachers and students are sharing their conclusions from the previous session and make suggestions for future meetings, presentations and work of the TA PAM. 4. MINUTES FROM TEACHERS DISCUSSION What are the profiles of our students? What does the profile mean? We should think about profile of an applicant, profile of a graduate, profile of a study programme itself. Study programmes of all four schools are described in presentations from the first TA PAM session held in Helsinki and presentation from TAM PAM workshop in Brno. What are the entrance examination requirements? Examination requirements differ from the level of studies. We are talking about bachelor entrance examinations. School: Belgrade Knowledge and skills to be examined: - project skills - leadership - teamwork - PR skills 6

7 Bratislava Brno Mikkeli - administration skills - stage management skills The exam consists of three parts: writing tests (examined: generally culture overview, public policy questions, essay on given topic and goal), English examination and interview. An important issue to be taken into account is a number of students in a class (we have to get all types of students to secure team roles in school theatre productions). First round: written tests focused on knowledge of culture and arts, management, logical thinking and leadership. Second round: English, written essay (simulation of a particular situation in which we examine project and financial thinking of applicants and their creativity, structural interview (motivation for study, personal strategy of an applicant). - written skills - calculation test - interview Question if study programmes taught in Bratislava and Brno are focused just on theatre: Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava runs a joint study programme which includes departments of theatre management, film production and music management. It is focused on performing arts. Students of music production are educated very individually but theatre production students cooperate with the opera studio. Students of music management have different expectations - very often there are students who wish to produce popular music. Theatre management department focuses mainly on theatre but regarding the situation of Slovakia graduates of theatre management enter the NGO sector and private sector in culture and public services very often. Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts runs two art management study programmes theatre management at Theatre Faculty (in bachelor there are two specializations: theatre production and stage management; master and doctoral studies are focused on theatre management) and music management at Music Faculty (also bachelor, master and doctoral studies). What are your goals and objectives when creating courses at your department? School: Bratislava Short summary: General rules determine strict conditions: 2/3 of courses must be based on core discipline (arts), 1/3 is intended for the specialisation. This is a problem for 7

8 Mikkeli theatre management: we need 2/3 for management, 1/3 for arts. Basic studies of different art disciplines, basic professional English and Swedish, literature (60 credits), professional studies (marketing, communication, funding, leadership management, economic studies). Teachers plan together a half year and make decision on students assignments. Practical training and optional studies (30 credits) and bachelor thesis (15 credits) are connected to working life. Language education is provided by language centre which is common for all programmes. What was also mentioned / shortly discussed. - special needs of minorities (Slovaks on Czech schools, bilingual assignments of Swedes in Finland) - why is art management taught at theatre faculties, not just at faculties of economics (the big advantage of theatre faculties is connection to artistic environment and connection to practice) - Arts management is an interdisciplinary field to prove that it is science on its own is a very hard job, Sanja Petricic. Topics to be discussed. - syllabus of our courses (topics that are covered each week) - difference between module courses and regular teaching - students assessment (what factors should be considered for grading student s work) - how we connect evaluation of practical project within the theoretical lectures - definition of the skills and competences in terms of the European Qualification Framework 8
