4 BA Translation September 2016 entry Full-time (day): 3 years Part-time (day): 4-6 years Arabic, English, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish For those wishing to engage with all aspects of technical and literary translation with a focus on practical work and the development of professional skills. Career opportunities Our graduates typically find work in national and international government, as well as nongovernmental organisations, such as the EU, banks, translation agencies and multinational corporations. Applicants should have: an A-level or A-level equivalent qualification very good reading and writing skills in their two languages (they must be able to read/interpret complex texts taken from a range of subjects and registers, and produce equivalent complex language in their other language) an understanding of and interest in the cultural context/s of their two languages an interest in cultural differences and how language can be used to mediate such differences an interest in analysing texts and meanings an interest in learning about new topics and researching them the ability to work on their own and carry out research independently using a variety of resources (including the internet) Professional accreditation Students of a high standard are awarded a certificate from the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), and may be exempt from Paper 1 of the CIOL s Postgraduate Diploma in Translation. MA Translation September 2016 entry Full time: 1 year, three days a week Part-time: 2 years, 3 evenings a week The following languages are included, to and from English (translating into mother language): Arabic, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian, Greek and Spanish Graduates with a good first degree who wish to start a career in translation Professional translators who wish to acquire a formal qualification in translation Mature students with previous career experience who wish to use their language skills differently Candidates should normally have: a good first degree in translation, interpreting, modern languages or a related field (a 2:2 degree may be considered depending on mark transcript and references.) substantial experience in translation in absence of a first degree excellent/native proficiency in mother language near native proficiency in the first foreign language good command of the second foreign language (if applicable) good command of English for non-native speakers, with the following English language qualification: IELTS 6.5 minimum, with a minimum score of 6 in all component parts Eligible applicants may be required to take an entrance aptitude test, and must provide their BA mark transcript and two references, one of which should be academic.

5 MA Conference Interpreting and MA Interpreting September 2016 entry Full-time and part-time modes of attendance. No evening or weekend courses are available. Open Language pathways are Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Spanish Other language combinations are possible when four students of a particular language combination pass the entry test. In the past, Farsi and Lithuanian have been offered. Translators or linguists wishing to start a career in interpreting and conference interpreting Practising interpreters with no formal qualification Mature students with previous career experience who wish to use their language skills to pursue a career in conference interpreting or interpreting Potential interpreters working as conference interpreters and public service interpreters A 2.1 first degree (or a 2.2 with professional experience in interpreting) Candidates with substantial experience as a professional interpreter but no degree will be considered. English and one/two other language(s) (for courses in Conference Interpreting) DPSI (for Interpreting applicants without a degree) Near-native proficiency in their first foreign language (language B) and a good command of their second foreign language (language C) (Conference Interpreting) English and one/two other language(s) (Interpreting) Good command of English for non-native speakers, with the following English language qualification: IELTS 6.5 minimum, with a minimum score of 6 in all component parts Eligible applicants may be required to take an entrance aptitude test, and must provide their BA mark transcript and two references, one of which should be academic. 6 Diploma in DPSI English Law and DPSI Health 09 October January 2016 (Law) 19 February 27 May 2016 (Health) 10:00-15:00 every Friday In the last five years the course has been available in the following languages: Arabic, Czech, Farsi/ Dari, French, Hausa, Italian, Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu. If your language is not listed, please contact us at New language pathways, however, can only be opened for a minimum of three students. Please note: This is a preparatory course for the DPSI examination. London Met is not an DPSI examination centre. Students wishing to sit the exam will have to register for it with the Chartered Institute of Linguists - visit their website ciol.org.uk for more information. Understand and practise the techniques used during consecutive, liaison and whispered interpreting in the diplomatic environment (eg. political talks, consular situations, visa interviews, diplomatic receptions) Understand the role of and the code of conduct for diplomatic interpreters English for main lectures Language specific sessions with tutors Advanced Conference Interpreting for EU/UN 08 October May October May :45 18:45 on Thursdays every two weeks Active language and passive languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Portuguese London Met interpreting alumni: 600 External participants: 950 Interpreters working towards taking the interpreting accreditation test for the EU and/or UN institutions Interpreters who are already qualified who wish to continue with and improve their practice Students will only be admitted following an interview with a lecturer. To give students an overview of the main characteristics of subtitling against other audiovisual translation modes To familiarise students with the complex semiotic essence of audio-visual texts To familiarise students with the main constraints (spatial and temporal) and cultural issues (eg. register, taboo words, dialects) and stylistic conventions related to the subtitling process To develop appropriate translation strategies for dealing with technical and linguistic issues in subtitling English 8

11 Diploma in Translation Preparatory Course [Training for the Dip Trans examination (CIOL)] Flexible starting dates; courses are arranged upon request Flexible From English into: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Russian From Spanish, French, German, Italian and Russian into: English 350 per unit 550 for two units 750 for three units The course is intended for candidates: enrolled or wishing to enrol on the CIOL Dip Trans examination wishing to revise and practise their translation skills, and improve their confidence in exam taking Candidates with a high level of linguistic competence equivalent to at least a good Honours degree in languages; this course is a postgraduate qualification. Located in the heart of the City, the building is just a few minutes from Moorgate tube station. Translation courses are based at our North London campus, opposite Holloway Road tube station on the Piccadilly line. Terms and conditions We cannot hold places unless we have full payment in advance. Places are allocated strictly on a first-come first-served basis. Full payment must be received at least two weeks before the start of the course. Payment must be made in full by the date listed to qualify for an early booking fee (if any). Please note that deadlines vary from one course to another. Places on a course will only be confirmed in writing once we know enough students have registered to run the course. Cancellation by the participant must be received in writing three weeks prior to the commencement of the course. Transfer to another short course is possible during the same academic year, subject to availability. All transfers and cancellations are subject to a 20% administration charge. There will be no refunds for cancellations received less than three weeks prior to the commencement of the course, or once a course has started. London Metropolitan University reserves the right to cancel courses or language pathways where there are insufficient numbers of participants. In this event, we will make a full refund of the course fees. If we have to cancel a course that has already begun, we will try to make alternative arrangements or will make a full or partial refund of the course fee as appropriate.
