Meerveld Gallinova, the show dedicated to exhibition fowl and small animals, was held on the 11th and 12th of November 2011, in Barneveld. A beautiful collection of nearly 1400 animals, from 250 exhibitors. Judges evaluations this year were also very impressive: 6 x 97 points (the maximum) and 168 times 96 points! Gallinova takes place in a beautiful and central location: the New Market Hall in Barneveld. The layout is spacious, the aisles are wide and the light hall is pleasant to walk through. You don t need to worry about money when visiting this exhibition: both the entrance and parking are free. With low penning fees and generous prizes, it is worthwhile to enter your birds or animals in the Gallinova Show. It is also the place to meet other top breeders and discuss the breeding results. Let s take a walk through the hall. Immediately you are greeted by the always cheerful Dirk de Jong. Especially for the kids he presents all sorts of tame animals that roam free on a large table and can be cuddled. A boy sits with a big Marans rooster on his arm, and a little girl is in love head over heels with a Flemish Giant. Learned young is done old, shall we say. We walk a little further and we come to a wonderful Aviornis display with aviaries. The many species of ducks and exotic birds are a feast for the eyes.

When we walk past the poultry cages we notice that many different breeds are entered: 21 large fowl and 25 bantam breeds. So nothing to complain about diversity in Barneveld! Outstanding evaluations were achieved, even twice birds with 97 points at the Bantams; a young white Barneveld bantam pullet by Partnership van de Kerkhof and a black Antwerp Bearded bantam by Partnership Hoevelaken. Two Specialty Clubs have housed their annual club show at Gallinova: the Silkie Club and the Barnevelder Club. At the Barnevelders, the judges Rijs, Siemens, Glastra, Kiewiet and Kip had their hands full with 151 large fowl and 193 bantams. And almost all of them were of good to excellent quality! Some birds were a bit too dark in ground colour, and sometimes the leg colour could be yellower. And there were some remarks on the comb serrations. Of the entered Silkies, the 36 large fowl were judged by Mr. Steenbakkers, who spent much time on this difficult breed that was presented in 9 different colours. He awarded 96 points to 6 birds, all 6 entered by Mr. Zwanenburg and Mr. Vulling. One of the large white Silkies without Beard even competed for Best LF in Show, but that honour was ultimately for a Groninger Meeuw pullet. In the class of Silkie bantams 40 birds had been entered. These were judged by Mr. Weaver who evaluated this breed for the first time and weighed the birds. Although the Bantams should be a third of the size of the LF, and the scales never lie, he handled this very smoothly. Above, right: Judge Martin Schreurs. Below: Judge Jonny Wever. Besides the chickens and bantams there were more animals of high quality. At the Guinea Fowl there was a well deserved 97 points for Partnership Drie Generaties from Lopik. At the turkeys there was a 96 points award for Junior Member Andre Biemans. In the class of Domesticated Waterfowl, the Pomeranian goose of Mr. Eenkhoorn won 97 points, same as the Black East Indian duck of R. Meijsen. Another 97 points award was for the Chilean Teal of Mr. Teunissen in the Wild Fowl. With only 50 birds entered, the number of fancy pigeons was a bit disappointing. Most reviews were between 92 and 96 points. So still a pretty high quality. After a walk through the aviaries and cages, it is high time for a snack at one of the cafes... This was Gallinova for the 2011 season. But the date for next year is already known: 9th and 10th November We are looking forward to meeting you there as a participant or visitor!
