1 Proud owners, top animals and striking breed products Part 1 YOUNG BIRD S DAY COCHIN CLUB IN TIEL (NL) Text and photos: Peter van den Top Each year, the Young Bird s Day of the Cochin Club is held in the building of the local breeders club in Tiel. With 126 Cochin bantams and 36 large fowl entered, this day was once again a big success. Here follows a report of the day. 3 THE COCHIN BANTAMS Like in other years the majority of the entered today were bantams. Compared to last year, a much larger number of Columbia coloured bantams; in 2006 only 5 but today a class of 18 birds, being Buff black columbia, Buff blue columbia, White black columbia and White blue columbia. Several breeders have chosen to work on these varieties and this will certainly have a positive influence on the quality of the birds. Left: A White black columbia pullet. We noticed a striking progress concerning type and tail carriage in this rather difficult and rare colour variety. Ria Lubbers pullet scored 95 point, very good! Right: An outstanding Partridge cockerel, owner Ardjan Warnshuis. The judge s report said: Apart from the comb an excellent bird in all parts. In the middle: A Partridge pullet. Left: This Mottled pullet showed an ideal type in the show pen, although she would not pose in the picture. Right: Silver Partridge pullet; an outstanding bird. Owner: Ria Lubbers. This pullet was Best of the notrecognised colours (AOC). Very good in type, the marking is not perfect but in Cochin bantam this sure is very good.

Right: Having lunch together. Days like this are not just for showing birds but also to meet each other and share experiences. Enjoying lunch together is a pleasure not to be missed, and as you can see in the picture, many join in. There also was a For Sale corner that was a big success, not only for breeders but also for people looking for some nice and friendly backyard chickens. Copyright 2008 Aviculture-Europe. 5 MERELBEKE Provincial Show of West Flanders October 2007 Text and photos: Dirk de Jong. 184 Chickens LF, 352 bantams. 402 fancy pigeons, 202 waterfowl & ornamental fowl, 308 rabbits, and 98 cavies were entered at the Provincial Show of West Flanders, as well as 77 homing pigeons (a separate group) and 20 series of eggs with their respective trios of chickens. For many years, the eggcompetition has been the pride of this exhibition, which has come up with a special concept to make it more attractive for the visitors. Next to each plate of eggs stood a trio of the breed that produces the eggs. Often a revelation to the public, everyone being amazed to see the relatively small eggs of the giant Brahma and surprised to see the chickens that lay the blue or green eggs. 7 Text and photos: Dirk de Jong 1105 animals were entered in Brugge, among those several animals from Dutch breeders. Becoming Champion is not that important in Brugge; sometimes it looks like everyone is a winner! This year, the Theme of the Show was The Goose and indeed they really were in the picture. The students of the painting and drawing course from the Brugge Academy under the guidance of Ann Baslahe and working in groups, made several superb auquaacryl paintings. One painting consisting of 9 panels was very appealing to me; a striking ninetych with air-borne geese, completed with a poem in the outer right below panel with the following text: Sometimes in a breath of wind Sometimes in a storm They are air borne A cloud of geese Outlined against the sun Which dreams Possibly inspire these birds Daring to set out So rash In so much air. A poem by Bert Schierbeek, from his work 'Vlucht van de vogel', Publisher: De Bezige Bij, Amsterdam An impressive variety of Goose breeds were gathered in the Geese Street of the made-up village of Geese Town, where all sorts of geese-related activities took place. You could learn how to cut a goose feather to write with. All pleasant characteristics of geese were shed light on, but also the aspects of problems with migrating geese were discussed.
