2 Chapter 1: An Exciting Prize Malik rode the bus to school on Wednesday with butterflies in his stomach. A few weeks ago, everyone in his class wrote essays for a statewide contest. And today, Malik s teacher was going to announce the winners. The essays were for a science contest, and science was Malik s favorite subject. His essay was about how he wanted to be a paleontologist. Paleontologists are scientists who dig up and study fossils. Fossils are the remains of plants and animals that lived long ago. Malik wanted to find out what the world was like millions of years ago.

Malik had worked very hard on his essay. He really wanted to win, because the prize was something very exciting. The winners of the contest got to spend a night at the Museum of Natural History! The museum was actually going to let a bunch of kids have a sleepover! Malik s family had moved to New York City just a few months ago. His parents hadn t been able to take him to the museum yet. But he really, really wanted to go. 3 l

The bus ride to school seemed to take forever. At last Malik got to school, and sat down next to his best friend, Jamie. Malik couldn t wait for the bell to ring. Mrs. Vega took attendance, collected homework, and then finally it was time for morning announcements. I have a very special announcement today, said Mrs. Vega. Congratulations to Malik, who is one of the winners of the statewide science essay contest! Everyone cheered for Malik, and his teacher gave him a certificate. Malik couldn t believe it he was a winner! 4

Chapter 2: Dinosaurs in the Dark Malik and the other contest winners would get to see a movie on a huge screen and explore the museum by flashlight. They would sleep on cots right next to the exhibits! Malik could take a friend with him, so he invited Jamie to come. Awesome! said Jamie. I ve been to the museum before but never at night! The day of the sleepover at the museum finally came. Malik s mom brought him and Jamie to the museum after dinner. They each had a sleeping bag, toothbrush, and flashlight. Their group would be sleeping in the Hall of North American Mammals. 5 l

6 I hope we don t have to sleep under the bears, said Jamie. They look like they might come after us! I don t think that s going to happen, laughed Malik. Everything in this museum has been dead for a long time! Actually, said someone from behind Malik, that s not true. If you follow me, I ll show you something that s very much alive! The boys turned around and saw a short woman in a uniform.

Hi everyone I m Lucy, and I m your guide tonight. Are you ready for some fun? Everyone followed Lucy down the hall. She showed them an exhibit of live snakes and lizards. The kids wandered around, staring and pointing at the animals in the displays. Wow, look at this boa! said Malik. It s bigger than I am! Look at these cool lizards! said Jamie. These animals live all around the world today, said Lucy. Lizards and snakes are also some of the oldest creatures on Earth. 7 l

They ve been around since the time of the next creatures we re going to see, Lucy continued. So follow me into the movie theater! I m glad we re not sleeping with the snakes and lizards! said Jamie. There s no way they could get out, said Malik. They followed Lucy into an enormous movie theater. Once everyone was seated and quiet, the movie started. 8

The movie was called Dinosaurs Alive! It showed how dinosaurs might have looked and acted. It also showed paleontologists studying dinosaur bones. That s what I want to do when I grow up! Malik whispered to Jamie. Cool! And then you can be in movies, too! Jamie whispered back. Shhh! said a girl in the row behind them. Sorry! whispered Malik and Jamie. Then the boys stopped talking and watched the rest of the movie. 9

After the movie, Lucy told the kids to get out their flashlights and follow her. She led them back through the museum. Most of the lights were off. The kids laughed and talked about the movie. They tried to guess what they were going to see next. Then Lucy stopped and turned to them. Look up, she said, and pointed her flashlight up ahead of them. 10

There in the dark, they could see a huge skeleton towering over them. They were in the museum s dinosaur halls! Lit by flashlights, the head of a Tyrannosaurus rex with a mouth full of sharp teeth seemed to sneer at them. These were the bones of creatures that had lived millions of years ago. Yikes these dinosaurs are scary, said Jamie. I m sure glad they re just a bunch of dried up bones. These dinosaurs are awesome! said Malik. And he led Jamie around the exhibit by flashlight. 11 l

Chapter 3: A Mysterious Noise After an hour, Lucy called out, Time to get ready for bed! Who wants to sleep? asked Malik. I m not finished looking around. Malik and Jamie were the last to get back to the Hall of Mammals. They had a snack, brushed their teeth, and crawled into their sleeping bags. Kids were still whispering, but it got quieter and quieter as they fell asleep. Malik was just about to drift off when Jamie whispered to him. What s that sound? 12

What sound? Malik asked him. That squeaking sound, said Jamie. Can t you hear it? Malik listened closely, and he did hear it: squeaksqueak-squeak-squeak. Where is it coming from? Malik asked Jamie. I don t know it keeps moving around, said Jamie. It stops and starts and gets louder and softer. It sounds like something alive. Maybe it s a bear! 13 l

I told you the bears aren t alive! The only living things here are snakes and lizards. And I don t think they squeak, said Malik. Maybe the dinosaurs came to life, gasped Jamie, and they re coming after us! Even if that was possible, I m pretty sure they don t squeak either, said Malik. AHHH, whispered Jamie, it s getting closer! 14

The boys turned toward the noise, but they couldn t see anything. Lucy was standing by the door with a flashlight and looking at them. She started to walk toward them and then... SQUEAK, SQUEAK, SQUEAK. The noise started again, louder than ever. Both boys laughed so hard that they started to cry! 15 l

Boys, you have to be quiet now. Everyone s sleeping, whispered Lucy. Sorry, said Jamie, but your squeaky shoes scared me! Scary shoes? laughed Lucy. That is funny! Well we solved the mystery, Jamie, whispered Malik. You were right. It was nothing to be afraid of, said Jamie as he lay down. That s true, said Malik. But now I m not so sure about those bears! Jamie chuckled. Go to sleep, Malik, he said. 16
