1 OLUMBIA ENTRAL HIGH SHOOL Annual School Report Hewitt Road Brooklyn, Michigan (517) Annual School Report Meeting Wednesday, September 22, :45 PM Library Mission Statement The mission of olumbia entral High School is to provide a climate where true learning can take place and to guide students into effective learning experiences. Profile olumbia entral High School is a ninth through twelfth grade school housed in an attractive rural setting. The area is known for its abundant lakes, Michigan International Speedway and easy access to many larger cities. The district also has two elementary schools, a middle school and a ommunity Education enter, which houses an alternative high school. olumbia entral is classified as a lass B size school, under the Michigan High School Athletic Association standards, with over 530 students in attendance during the school year. olumbia entral High School is fortunate to have an experienced faculty with the necessary qualities and certifications to instruct our students. Accreditation olumbia entral High School has been fully accredited by the North entral Association (NA) since the school year. Accreditation signifies that olumbia entral High School recognizes and meets the diverse needs of it students. With the establishment of No hild Left Behind (NLB) and Michigan s EDUATION YES accountability requirements, olumbia entral High School has Met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) with a omposite Grade B on the Michigan School Report ard. Recently, the state has also required that districts record the percentage of students who drop out of the school system. The retention rate for olumbia entral High School is 99%. From our records, it was determined that during the school year, only one HS student did not enroll into another school district or Options High School. Attendance olumbia entral High School s daily average attendance rate for the school year was 93%. School Improvement Plan The olumbia entral High School s staff has established long-range school improvement goals that will prepare our students to be successful. The HS staff has embraced the district academic goals, as well as their building goals; District Academic Goals: olumbia students will improve writing skills. (Language Arts) 2

Schedule visitation of NA team. ore urriculum olumbia entral High School has met or exceeded the State Board of Education core urriculum in all of the following areas: Health and Physical Education Language Arts Education Math Education Science Education World Studies Education (Social Studies) Technology Arts Education Foreign Language Education urriculum objectives are met through a variety of strategies and methodologies. Students have a great variety of course offerings to successfully prepare them for postgraduate challenges. Teachers work together to optimize the learning experiences available at olumbia entral High School. Expanded urriculum olumbia entral High School students have the opportunity to participate in dual enrollment (post-graduate coursework) and attend classes at Jackson ommunity ollege in which they earn college or high school credit. Seventeen olumbia students took advantage of dual enrollment during the school year. Other specialized offerings at HS include: Advanced Placement English Advanced Placement Psychology Industrial Arts and two levels of ADD Extensive Science and Technology classes 3
4 urriculum alignment in Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Technology, Science, Health and Physical Education. Leadership lass (community service oriented) Musical performances (Band and hoir, Drum Line) Plays and dramatic performances Student ouncil ommunication amp Art Fair Student portfolios Student Achievement During the school year the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) was given in the spring for 11 th graders. Below are the scores for the past three years. (The percentage score given indicates that out of 100% of the students taking the test, the number given of HS students were deemed PROFIIENT satisfactorily meeting the established benchmarks for successfully completing the content area test.) Math 63.5% 53.5% 66.0% English/LA 65.3% 65.0% 79/6% Science 60.3% 64.5% 76.7% Social Studies 14.3% 20.0% 38.8% Merit Scholars 59 students (46%) 48 (38%) 54 (52%) The average composite AT score for the lass of 2004 was The state AT average was 21.4 and the national average AT Adequate Yearly Progress With the implementation of the federal No hild Left Behind (NLB) legislation, the olumbia entral High School received its first Michigan School Report ard during the school year. The State of Michigan has designed EDUATION YES as the monitoring format for the NLB requirements. olumbia entral High School Met Adequate Yearly Progress and received a omposite Grade of B. Specialized Schools At olumbia entral High School, 11 th and 12 th grade students are offered the option of attending the Jackson Area areer enter, an outreach of the Jackson ounty Intermediate School District. Students electing to attend the areer enter spend half of their school day enrolled in a particular program (i.e., Public Safety, Auto mechanics, osmetology, Horticulture, ommercial Arts, Health Services, ulinary School, hildcare, Pre-Teaching, Finance/Bookkeeping, etc.) 4
5 In addition, students that experience difficulty in the traditional high school setting have the ability to attend the alternative high school Options High School at the larklake building. This program houses approximately 90 students in grades olumbia entral High School has four full-time Special Education teachers who work with Learning Disabilities and Educationally Mental Impaired students. This has been expanded to include an Emotionally Impaired classroom for students from around Jackson ounty. Post-Secondary Enrollment Seventeen olumbia entral High School juniors and seniors enrolled in college courses at Jackson ommunity ollege. By completing their high school requirements and successfully passing the MEAP content area(s) tests, student qualify to be dually enrolled in high school and college classes. The district must pay for these courses, as long as the student has met the qualifying criteria. Student Support Services olumbia entral High School is dedicated to providing resources to address all aspects of developmental students needs. In an effort to do this, a 9 12 counseling department has 1-½ counselors, a full-time secretary to meet the needs for individuals, small groups, and the building. A monthly newsletter is sent from the ounseling Office to all HS families. Full-time breakfast and lunch service is available to HS students. Those qualifying for Free and/or Reduced Lunch benefits are provided meals, once proper paperwork has been completed. In addition, transportation is provided to in-district resident students should they opt to ride the bus system. Student Activities In an effort to encourage students to be well-rounded and healthy, a full complement of athletic, musical and student leadership options are available to the student body of HS. HS offers nine competitive sports for men and nine competitive sports for women. Sports, music, drama activities and student leadership play an important part in the life of students enrolled at HS. Activities that enrich academics, expand cultural awareness, and offer insight into special interest to our students include, but are not limited to: Marching Band Drumline oncert and Symphonic Bands Instrumental/Vocal Solo and Ensemble Activities Drama Presentations Voices of olumbia Field Trips Special Olympics ompetition 5
6 National Honor Society Academic Games Student ouncil Peer Listeners ommunication amp Parent and ommunity Participation olumbia entral High School enjoys the active involvement of its parents and the community. Parents provide leadership through the beneficial Athletic, Academic, and olumbia Music Association booster clubs. Parent-Teacher onferences are regularly held to discuss common concerns and to develop strategies to improve student performance. HS has a 65% attendance rate at the Fall onferences. In addition, the Open House held in September enjoys great parental support, as does the regularly scheduled student events, such as games, plays, musicals, Art Shows, etc. Points of Pride onstruction of the new olumbia ommunity Fitness enter has expanded health options for students and the community, with state-of-the-art fitness equipment and classes available for participation. For two years in a row, the olumbia entral Drum Line has been state champions. A dedicate staff willing to work and make every student successful in achieving their personal goals. The all-school musical has become a olumbia tradition and involves many students in many capacities. Student-athletes have earned commendable grade point averages while pursuing their sport(s) of choice. The Leadership lass has coordinated many events that encourage service to the community (i.e., ommunity Pantry Food Drive, etc.) The HS National Honor Society successfully hosts an annual Blood Drive each year. Our facilities have received face lifts and additions that create a safe and clean environment for students to learn and the community to enjoy. 6
