Pa r i s : A e r o t r o p o l i s E u r o p e The aerotropolis: the economic center of the 21 st century A revolution is taking place. Throughout the world, entire cities are rising up around major airports like Memphis, Paris, Bangkok and Guangzhou. With their high-tech offices, logistics warehousing, hotel and leisure resorts, they represent the business centers of tomorrow. They are known as aerotropolises. Air transport is transforming world trade. If we look back over the last thirty years, the world s GDP has grown by 150%, world trade by 350%, and air freight by an incredible 1,400%. More than a third of the value of the goods transported worldwide is now shipped by plane. All industries are concerned if the value added is high enough, going from microelectronics to pharmaceuticals, from engine parts to luxury goods. This is not surprising. Air freight meets all the actual needs of our economy with direct access to markets worldwide, rapid and flexible logistics and just in time management. As a result, the world s principal air hubs such as Memphis, Bangkok, Paris and Guangzhou are in the process of surrounding themselves with new business centers thanks to their drawing power. The various areas of the aerotropolis, up to twenty kilometers around the airport terminals, are linked by expressways and high speed trains. These hubs contain logistics and semi-industrial areas, offices, business and convention centers, hotel resorts and leisure parks, including residential areas. Sky City in Hong Kong even has an artificial island housing 45,000 residents, who generally work at the airport or nearby. There are many benefits to establish in an aerotropolis. If you ask LG or LVMH why they have located in an aerotropolis, they will give you the same reason. Being close to the runways allows their companies to be only a few flight hours from their suppliers as well as their end markets. The multimodal connection with expressways, trains, canals and ports gives them a solid base in the region and enables them to optimize their supply chain. The presence of logistics, industrial and tertiary sector partners, often within the aerotropolis area, helps their businesses perform better. The quality of life that their employees can benefit from with green areas, leisure activities and shopping centers, while still being close to a major city, is considerably higher than the standards today. Aerotropolises are already a reality. This is true to Memphis, the leading aerotropolis in North America in terms of size and freight activity. In Asia, Guangzhou in the heart of China s leading industrial region is foreseeing to join Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing as the main Asian aerotropolis. Paris Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, the largest freight hub in Europe, is becoming the biggest aerotropolis in the region, with more than 3 billion to be invested over the next four years.
Memphis, America s Aerotropolis This is the world s leading cargo airport, and the finest example of the airport-city today, according to the American magazine Fast Company. Memphis International, with its 7 expressways, 5 railroads, 53 terminals on the Mississippi River and direct access to both Atlantic and Pacific ports, has attracted more than 1,000 companies. As a result, the region s GDP has grown by half again as much over the past ten years. The 25 main players of this economic center have come together as a group within the aerotropolis. 80% of goods will cross at least one border by 2020, compared to 20% today. Source: McKinsey 40% of the value of international trade is achieved using air transport. This should increase from 4% to 6% per year over the next few years. Source: IATA AN EXPERT VIEW John Kasarda, Director and Professor, Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina Airports are going to shape the economic zones and urban development of the 21 st century, just as expressways did in the 20 th, railroads in the 19 th and seaports in the 18 th.
Roissy-CDG: the ideal location for your company Roissy-CDG: open to the world Roissy-CDG is the leading freight hub in Europe and the second biggest in terms of passenger traffic. It is also the major connection point in terms of road, rail, river and indirectly maritime transport. It provides immediate access to 500 million consumers in Europe and across the world. Welcome to Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, Europe s number one airport for air freight (2.3 million metric tons in 2008), and number two for passenger traffic (61 million passengers). This gigantic airport which never sleeps serves nearly 500 cargo destinations throughout the world, and allows 24,000 connections every few days, mainly thanks to the interconnection between the major hubs like FedEx, Air France-KLM and France s La Poste postal services. Ressources remain with 371 acres of real estate available. CDG is also an impressive multimodal logistics platform. The airport runways lie directly alongside several expressways: the A1 (Paris-Brussels), and the A3 and A86 (serving the east and west of Paris), and are linked to 10,500 kilometers of motorways and 1 million kilometers of highways in France. Thanks to the Carex project, the rail junction inside the airport will soon make it possible to transport freight in the world s densest high speed rail network, setting CDG only a few hours from Lyon, Marseille, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy and Spain. The region has 70 river ports, including one in Gennevilliers (3.4 million metric tons of cargo per year) just a few kilometers away. Last but not least, the proximity of major European ports like Le Havre, Antwerp and Rotterdam and the ports of the Mediterranean sea, connects the airport s main sea routes to Africa (in a few days) and Asia (in less than 30 days). 1st 2 nd BIGGEST PASSENGER AIRPORT IN EUROPE 5 CARGO AIRPORT IN EUROPE TRANSPORT MODES FOR AN UNRIVALED MULTIMODAL SOLUTION: AIR, ROAD, RAIL, RIVER AND MARITIME 500 CARGO DESTINATIONS WORLDWIDE 500 MILLION CONSUMERS REACHABLE IN JUST A FEW HOURS
Paris - Europe s leading economic region Thanks to its location just outside Paris, Aerotropolis Europe, Paris offers a solid anchor for a corporate headquarter or subsidiary. No other economic region in Europe benefits from the economic dynamism, international appeal, workforce and modern infrastructure offered by the Paris metropolitan area. I t s simple: Paris is number 1. The Paris metropolitan area is Europe s leading economic region, with a GDP of 534 billion (2007). It draws most of its business from the tertiary sector, particularly services targeting companies, and is the largest business region in France, and again number 1 in Europe in terms of R&D investment. It is the leading destination for tourists, of course, but also as the location of over 500 of the biggest worldwide groups, and for the number of jobs created locally by foreign companies. It is the second biggest destination in Europe for foreign investment. What do companies like about Paris? First of all, its economic dynamism. Secondly, its labor pool of 5.7 million workers with a highly qualified and productive labor force among which business executives and professionals are fully represented. Lastly, Paris s work conditions and quality of life, with the largest variety of cultural and sports activities in Europe. Paris Roissy-CDG is one of the economic driving forces in the Paris metropolitan area, attracting a large number of new technology companies and industries in the automotive, aeronautics, luxury and design sectors. The Roissy-CDG Customs offer companies trading internationally a collaborative approach and all necessary tools to facilitate their competitiveness: Customs clearance around the clock Fast and simple dematerialized applications: Delta, ECS The economic action center, a council for companies which provides tailor-made, enabling companies to minimize costs Systems like the «42» customs system, economic customs systems and A12 clearance offer the considerable benefit of importing with the suspension or exoneration of VAT. The Roissy platform also contributes to future Europewide customs clearance by participating in the drafting of single European Community clearance procedures.
Aerotropolis Europe TM, Paris: a strategic project To promote the economic hub around CDG, an association has been created which brings together the major players in the area. The goal is to facilitate other companies to establish in the area and generate synergies between them. THE EXAMPLE OF CAREX, FOUNDING MEMBER The Carex project has found its true role within the Aerotropolis Europe, Paris association. The future European high speed rail freight service will by 2013 place Roissy-CDG 2 hours from Lyon, 2 hours 15 minutes from London, and 3 hours from Amsterdam. This multimodal platform will be able to transport nearly 900 airfreight pallets per day, at lower cost than air transport and with lower CO 2 emissions. It is thus a potential key partner for companies wishing to service Europe from Paris. All the more so in that Carex already gathers the major transport players (including Air France, FedEx and France s La Poste postal service), adding considerable economic weight to the Aerotropolis Europe, Paris association. U nion is strength. In 2009, 12 representatives of the major companies and institutions in the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle hub joined forces to form the Aerotropolis Europe, Paris association. They consist of carriers (Air France, Carex, FedEx), business park and infrastructure owners (Aéroville, the Roissy Golf Park, the international Sino-European and New Energy Center, Parc Mail, Paris Nord 2, Parc Sud Roissy, Roissy Paris CDG World Trade Center), and local players in economic development (Plaine de France, Roissy Développement). Together, they represent over 3 billion and around 1 million square meters of projects over the next few years in the area (see following page), i.e. nearly 20% of the office capacity (80,000 sq. m.) and logistics warehousing capacity (50,000 sq. m.), which will be added to the existing capacity. Not to mention the commercial, hotel and leisure (movies, spas, golf courses, etc.) facilities, parks and green areas that will go hand in hand with these structures to guarantee a pleasant environment for workers. With all these resources, the association is pursuing a number of objectives. Firstly, to be able to speak to the local, national, European and international authorities with a single voice in order to promote economic activity around Roissy-CDG, and facilitate the set-up of other companies and institutions in the area. By creating work groups and partnerships, the members want to optimize the synergies between them all, and create the best possible conditions for them to operate in. Lastly, the creation of Aerotropolis Europe, Paris will make it possible to generate strong economic links with the other aerotropolises already established around the world, such as those in Memphis and Guangzhou. 1 million sq. m. of projects programmed Over 3 billion in investments over four years 12 major economic players united in one association
Alain Chaillé President of Aerotropolis Europe TM, Paris The member companies and institutions decided to found the Aerotropolis Europe association in order to promote economic activity around Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport and in the Paris metropolitan area. With Europe s highest GDP, this is one of the most attractive regions in Europe offering companies access to more than 500 million consumers and has major potential for growth. The Aerotropolis Europe association has two objectives: firstly, to enhance the reputation, dynamism and appeal of Roissy-CDG and then the Paris region as a whole, and secondly, to foster the setting up of private ventures. Through Aerotropolis Europe we can communicate our projects and issues to local and national authorities with one voice. The aerotropolis concept is a marvellous opportunity for economic development not only around Roissy-CDG but everywhere else in France and Europe. We hope to welcome new members and large-scale projects that will make Roissy-CDG Europe s reference distribution center. The success of Aerotropolis America in Memphis, around FedEx main hub, and the future aerotropolis at Guangzhou in China, will enable us to forge strong economic ties. With support from all concerned, we have the ability to drive the Paris region internationally.
