3 3 Iceland A few facts Iceland is often referred to as "the land of fire and Ice" this is because glaciers and icecaps lie next to steaming hot springs, geysers and volcanoes. stay 3 nights Winter Break Reykjavik weekend from 499 Population: 300,000. Iceland (103,000 sq km) is similar in size to England. The majority of the population (60%) is situated in and around the capital city of Reykjavik. Currency: Iceland has its own currency the Icelandic Kronur or ISK the exchange rate hovers between 110 and 150 ISK to the pound. In September 2008 it was 150 ISK to 1.00 GBP. A beer in Iceland costs 800 ISK or 5.00, a litre of unleaded petrol costs 165 ISK or Time Zone: Iceland is on GMT all year round so in the winter period it is the same as UK but in British Summer time it is 1 hour behind. On 21st June Iceland is truly the land of the midnight sun but on 21st December the day is very short indeed.it is light almost 24 hours a day in June and dark for a similar period in December. Example Climate Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec in Reykjavik High o C Low o C Average o C Rain mm Climate: In Reykjavik which is in the south of Iceland the average temperature is 11 o C (52 o f) in summer and C (30 o f) in winter. The climate in Iceland is surprisingly mild for its northerly lattitude (66 degrees) due to the warming effect of the gulf stream. The weather is however very changeable with plenty of wind and rain so come prepared for a very mixed bag. Good shoes or boots, fleeces, rain proof coats and a good pair of sun glasses. Month Jan Feb Mar Apr May June SUNRISE 11:19 9:55 8:21 6:42 4:39 3:15 SUNSET 15:44 17:29 18:59 20:22 22:12 23:29 Month July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec SUNRISE 3:07 4:50 6:16 7:36 9:24 10:51 SUNSET 23:55 22:15 20:37 18:57 16:58 15:40 Official Language: Whilst the official language is Icelandic most Icelanders speak two or more other languages. The most common being English, Danish, Swedish and German. Hot Water. Natural hot water is piped from underground springs directly to homes and hotels in Iceland. This is used for heating and drinking water. At first you may notice an unusual smell and this is the sulphur in the water which is harmless. Iceland is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) throughout the year, and does not go on daylight saving time. The majority of photographs in this brochure are taken by Ragnar Th. Sigurdsson and to see more of his work go to Many thanks to Ragnar.

4 4 The captal is a city full of contrast, from the bustling harbour and fishing port with its evocative smells and excellent fish restaurants, to the bustle of the modern shopping centre a short walk away There are many lovely old buildings to see in Reykjavik including the Parliament house, built in 1881, and the old Government building, which dates from the mid-eighteenth century. Both are in the old centre of Reykjavik between the harbour and the lake. Delightful cuisine There are over 80 fine restaurants in Reykjavik serving many of the countries specialty dishes. Some of the best fish in the World can be tried at the restaurants around the harbour. Reykjavik Reykjavik the most northerly capital city is the first port of call for most visitors to Iceland. This is most certainly the capital of cool with colourful buildings, clean streets and smartly dressed locals. From the University, historic and government buildings, galleries and museums to designer boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs to the family park and farmyard Zoo, Reykjavik has something for everyone. Once you have spent up in the boutiques, taken a site seeing tour and eaten at one of the town s restaurants you will be ready for the real reason for a visit to Iceland, exploring its natural beauty. Nightlife Reykjavik has a extremely active night life. The surprising variety of pubs offer a great night out and most serve meals as well as wines and beers. There are also several nightclubs, which open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Other nights the nightclubs will close at 1am. "The Smokeless City", is the most northerly capital in the World. Reykjavik is a modern capital with international standard hotels and restaurants. It also has a remarkable old world charm and there are many old buildings which add to this character. Reykjavik is thought to be the cleanest capital city in the world. stay 3 nights Luxury Borg break Reykjavik weekend from 599 stay 3 nights Blue City Break Reykjavik weekend from 399 All prices printed in this brochure are for guidline purposes only and do not constitute an offer. Isafjordur (457 km) The Western Fjords are one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and least visited corners of Iceland. The Western Fjords form the most westerly part of Iceland and geologically are very old. The mountains are high and the coastline indented by deep narrow fjords. At the foot of the cliffs you can see seals basking in the sun and whales are often seen off shore. There is an area of hot springs near Reykjanes at the south eastern end of Isafjordur. The town is surrounded by mountains and the sea.

The lake is one of the largest in Iceland, 36.6 km 2 and renowned for wildlife. In addition to two swimming pools, there are numerous bathing possibilities in Myvatnssveit. The most interesting one is the Lagoon, which is similar to the Blue Lagoon in Sudurnes, and for rinsing off the clay afterwards there is a natural steambath in Jardbadsholer. Myvatn is one of the best fishing lakes in Iceland and the bird life in the Myvatn area is world-famous. Blonduos (244 km) Blönduós is a small seaside town in the north-western part of Iceland. The fishing season begins in June and finishes in September. Other interests include bird watching, canoeing, golfing, hiking, kayaking, and river rafting. Golfers can enjoy a 9-hole golf course which is located just north of the town. Husafell (140km) Husafell is a lovely, wooded lava area with a nice swimming pool, sauna, and a 9 hole golf course, horse rental, organized walks and longer tours, such as glacier excursions and lava cave trips can be booked locally. The nearby Langjokull Glacier is a great location for skidooing. Skaftafell (327 km) Skaftafell is Iceland's second largest National Park after Pingvellir.
