8 Answers to Frequently Asked Questions 1. It costs nothing to register and host a NNO party. The Orlando Police Department will even pay for you street closure. We encourage you to seek donations for all of your food, drinks and even your party activities (moon bounce, clown, DJ, etc.) 2. NNO is National Night Out, America s Night Out Against Crime. In 1984, NNO was introduced as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. NATW s National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August (In Texas, the first Tuesday of October). 3. NNO Block Parties can be held ANYWHERE in the City limits of Orlando. Many parties are held at churches, community centers, but the most effective parties are held right on your street or in your backyard. The idea behind NNO is to get to know who lives on your street and get neighbors talking to each other and looking out for one another. Apartment communities, individual streets, entire subdivisions, churches, condo communities, civic clubs; all are invited to participate. 4. To register your street or neighborhood, visit cityoforlando.net/police and under the Citizen Information tab you will find an option for NNO. There you will have the option to register online or print out a registration form that can be mailed to PO Box 913, Orlando, FL You can also call to have a registration packet sent to you. 5. NNO happens each year on the first Tuesday in August. This year it will take place on August 4, Most NNO Block Parties happen between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. However, you should tailor your party time to meet the needs of your guests. 7. The theme for Orlando is: "Crime and Drugs Not On My Block". Most neighborhoods use that theme, but you can feel free to select and use any theme that ties in to crime prevention. 8. AND 9. Each NNO Block Party that registers with the Orlando Police Department will receive a NNO Party Package. This package will include a NNO banner, NNO balloons, NNO t-shirts and a host of other give-a-ways that will assist in making 8

9 your party more memorable. If your registration is received by July 10, 2015, the Party Package will be delivered to the address you provide on your registration form. If you submit your application after July 11th, you must use the following pick up schedule: July 20 July 21 July 22 July a.m. - 2p.m. 3-7 p.m. 10 a.m. - 2p.m. 3-7 p.m. When picking up your party package at the Orlando Police Department Headquarters (100 S. Hughey Ave. Orlando, FL 32801), please call when you are 5 minutes away and a staff person will meet you at your car with your Party Package. This will help cut down your wait time. Upon arrival, please approach the gate at the rear of the building, press the button at the gate and let the staff person know that you are here to pick up NNO materials. 10. Neighborhoods that participate in NNO, report that they feel a stronger sense of community amongst their neighbors and really enjoy getting to know who lives in their neighborhoods. It is also a great way to meet your City Commissioner and the officers that patrol their neighborhood, since they will visit registered parties. 11. Each registered party is visited by their neighborhood OPD patrol officer. City of Orlando Commissioner s, OPD Mounted Officers and Bike Officers. Trucks from the Orlando Fire Department will also visit NNO parties. 12. The Orlando Police Department Neighborhood Watch Unit will supply fliers for your event. This is a great way to let your neighbors know that you are hosting a party and inviting them to attend your event. Please call to request your flyers. 13. NNO happens all across the country. If you are in the City of Orlando, but are not sure if your address falls within Orange County Sherriff s Department s jurisdiction or OPD s, please call and we can assist you in determining which you are in. If you are in another city, please contact your local law enforcement agency for further details on how to register your neighborhood. 14. OPD recognizes that businesses within the City are an integral part of each of our communities and we appreciate the support they offer to NNO. Past 9

10 business sponsors have included Target, Orlando Health, Flippers Pizzeria, WellCare, Sea World and many, many more. If you are interested in supporting our efforts please contact Georgeanna Butler at the Orlando Police Department. or For information on NNO across the country or to purchase NNO paraphernalia, visit Flyers that go on each neighbor s door, sending out evites, Nextdoor.com, your neighborhoods social media site or website. Be creative! 17. Yes, we encourage all City of Orlando churches to register for NNO. NNO Goes to Church Registrants will be given a NNO Block Party Package that includes: NNO t-shirts Coloring Books Water & Soda NNO banner Sidewalk Chalk Frisbees The first 25 churches that register for NNO Goes to Church will receive a moon bounce and a food concession machine. 18. Yes, apartment and condo communities are welcomed to register for NNO. We only require that community be within the City limits of Orlando.
