2 What if we were weightless? From the outside it looked like an ordinary airplane. Actually it was a Boeing KC-135, a refuelling tanker built in 1964, whose design was based on the Boeing 707. However, appearances were deceptive as the 13 students from Europe and the USA boarding the plane would soon realize. Inside, instead of rows of seats there was a long tunnel which was heavily padded with some soft white material making it look like a lunatic asylum. There were only few windows, but the lights along the walls 13 provided an eery illumination. At the back a few seats had been left and that s where the young scientists quickly sat down anxious but ready for the flight of their lives. Each time we were in free fall and weightless another team of students conducted its experiment. The first were the Dutch who wanted to find out why cats always land on their paws. Next was the German team who wanted to find out if a traditional building method might be used for building in space. The American team conducted an experiment involving solar sails to be used by satellites. Two hours later, after more than a dozen times going up and down in the plane and doing their experiments, the students were predominantly feeling exhilarated rather than sick. Most of them said it was 61 an experience they would be keen to repeat. For a whole year, science students from both continents had competed for a place on this flight sponsored by the European space Agency. The task had been to suggest imaginative experiments that could be conducted in conditions of zero gravity and the winners then had been invited to join this flight. For the following two hours the Boeing s flight resembled that of a huge bird having lost its reason, sometimes shooting upwards towards the stars and then again hurtling down towards the Earth. The purpose was to achieve a state of weightlessness for a few seconds. The pilot took off smoothly enough but soon any feelings I or the young scientists might have had of being on a regular passenger flight got dismissed when the plane was put in a 45-degree climb for about 20 seconds. Then the engines were cut out and we were weightless. Left and right, up and down no longer had any meaning, it was very confusing. The pilot pulled the plane out of its nosedive after 10 seconds of free-fall. And although the return of gravity was less sudden than its loss, some students came down with a bump.
