4 Short DH History in Sweden Sweden introduced district in the late 1940s and since then is has been continuous extension. District heating is today the dominant form of heating in the central town of more than 240 of the 290 municipalities. In 2012, DH distributed over 53 TWh of district heating. Of this amount around, 60 percent for all home heating 30 percent for heating service sector premises 10 per cent of heat demand within industry. 7 Renova Renova (Co-owned by 10 municipalities in region) ~ ton/annum waste is burned ~1 500 GWh heat is produced (~30 % Gothenburg) ~275 GWh electricity is produced 1 ton waste ~ 3,2 MWh (2,7 heat & 0,5 electricity) ~ 50 % of total revenues comes from heat & electricity production (~30 million Euro)

8 The European Perspective In 414 waste-to-energy plants only half of the energy is recovered as electricity or heat 100 million tones of non-recycled waste is deposited in landfills That is equivalent to 200 plants the size of Renova (Gothenburg) the Parliament calls for a heat strategy heating and cooling remains largely neglected by EU policies, despite representing over 45% of the final energy consumption in the European Union. 9 Price trends for Gothenburg Energy is among the lowest in the country. Price trend in % since 2002 When ranking the municipalities for the lowest price, Gothenburg comes in place 15 out of more than 250 companies. 235 are more expensive.
