NURS 620 Course Description and Goals This course provides an overview of the research process and explores major nursing and health related theoretical models. The purpose of this course is to provide the background that will prepare the student to apply and conduct graduate level research in nursing. The use of research and theory to influence changes in nursing care delivery, in health care agencies, and in educational settings is explored. Ethical considerations and the critique of literature for scientific rigor and clinical utility are provided. Trends in nursing theory, health- related research, research design, data collection and analysis are explored. This course provides the foundation for the master's thesis, project, or professional paper. Course Content Objectives Course Content Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Analyze selected nursing and health related models 2. Evaluate the appropriateness of the selected nursing and health related models and theories for application in research, advanced nursing care, and in educational and leadership settings 3. Increase knowledge and methodological skills needed to carry out the research process including moral and ethical dimensions of research 4. Critique nursing research reports for rigor and clinical utility
4 5. Assess the practical application of interpreting research outcomes to promote evidence- based practice 6. Design and present a graduate level literature review. Required Texts/Readings - may be purchased online by most book- selling vendors. Used books and e- books are fine and will be less expensive. Textbooks Grove, S.K., Burns, N., & Gray, J.R. (2014). The practice of nursing research: Appraisal, synthesis and generation of evidence (7 th ed.). St. Louis, MO: Elsevier Sanders. ISBN: Peteva, R. (2011). A cross section of nursing research: Journal articles for discussion and evaluation (5 th ed.). Glendale: CA. Pyrczak. ISBN: American Psychological Association. (2009). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.). ISBN RECOMMENDED TEXT: Nursing Theory Reference Textbook of Your Choice Classroom Protocol and Requirements There are two primary assignments that will be ongoing throughout the semester: discussion forum questions based on assigned article readings and a literature review. The third assignment is a poster presentation of the findings from your literature review, including introduction information from Module 1 Discussion Posting about the leadership problem that is the focus of the literature review. Discussion Assignments 312 points = 60% of total grade for course Part of course requirements includes participation in all discussion forum bulletin boards with evidence of substantial reading and critical thinking. I
5 expect each student to contribute to the class in a thoughtful manner at least two times every week. Discussion forum postings must be relevant to the class discussion. You are being evaluated on quality of response more so than quantity. Literature Review Assignment 100 points = 30% of total grade The literature review is a direct application of course content. The course modules will present the steps of the research process including the application of a theoretical frame in a research study, methodology, data collection and analysis. You will go through many of the steps of the research process in the discussion board postings. However, for this assignment you will complete a literature review about a leadership topic that interests you that may carry over into your culminating activity. The literature review is a formal scholarly paper using APA format. This assignment is 30% of the total grade for the course. See the Assignment Guidelines for the Literature Review for the structure and content of the assignment. The grading rubric closely follows these areas. Therefore, it is critical that you read the guidelines/rubric carefully, understand and meet the expectations, and ask for clarification if needed. Poster Display of Scholarly Paper 25 points = 10% total grade Display a poster using power point that summarizes your research topic and what was found from the review of literature that will lead to a question. This poster will be posted at the end of the semester in the Discussions Board. Late Papers and Late Postings. Turning papers in on time is an important part of professional responsibility and is an expectation at the graduate level. Papers turned in after the posted due date will not earn any points. Discussion forum bulletin board postings also must be made in a timely manner as indicated by the weekly schedule of module learning activities and will not be accepted late. If you have extenuating circumstances contact me before the due date of any assignment. Dropping and Adding You are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures about add/drops, academic renewal, etc.
6 found You should be aware of the new deadlines and penalties for adding and dropping classes. Grading Policy Grades will be determined based on your final cumulative scores on the graded discussion forums, scholarly paper (literature review assignment), and the poster presentation. You must earn a B- or greater in every required MSN course order to continue in the MSN program. Grades are awarded based on points, which equal total percentage earned: Online Participation (12 modules = 26 points each) 312 points = 60% Literature Review Assignment 100 points = 30% Poster Presentation 25 points = 10% TOTAL = 437 points = 100% Grading Scale N620 Percentage of Total Points Possible Points Possible Grade A A B B B- < or less Fail University Policies and Campus Resources Academic Integrity Students are expected to be familiar with the University s Academic Integrity Policy.
