Each day of travel will celebrate the history and culture proudly embraced by the great 20th-century Spaniard, including his birthplace at Zumaia, the 13th-century castle he restored in Pedraza de La Sierra his life s touchstone, and the picturesque Segovia a favored destination for artistic inspiration. We will see, touch, and taste Spain as intended by this charismatic and influential painter a national hero and life-long friend of both Ambassador and Mrs. Garrett. As ongoing supporters and previous travelers with strong ties to Evergreen Museum & Library, we are offering you the opportunity to join us on this special adventure. The trip price is $4400 based on twenty travelers ($3500 land only), of which $300 may be considered a tax-deductible charitable contribution to the museum. As you ll read in the following itinerary, the trip includes airport shuttle service to/from Baltimore, international flights, accommodations based on double occupancy, extensive and unique cultural activities, and exquisite meals. Please complete the enclosed Reservation Form and return it with your deposit of $500 per person by June 15, 2010, after which time deposits cannot be refunded. Fly nonstop to Madrid. Thursday, September 23 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Arrive in madrid, our home for the next two nights. After a late lunch, we lll explore 20thand 21st-century Spanish art at the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, including works by the great masters of the interwar period Juan Gris, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso (whose Guernica is the centerpiece) and by modern Spanish artists including Ignacio Zuloaga. In the evening, savor something of the atmosphere of 19th-century Madrid as you dine on traditional Madrileño cusine. Friday, September 24 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Enjoy a guided tour of the Palacio Real, Madrid s fabulous Royal Palace, inspired by Bernini s designs for the Louvre in Paris and one of Europe s outstanding architectural monuments. This former residence of Spain s Bourbon rulers boasts more rooms than any other palace in Europe, with priceless collections of tapestries, paintings, furniture, and objets d art. After lunch, visit the Prado Museum, featuring one of the world s finest collections of European art, from the 12th century to the early 19th century, based on the former Spanish Royal Collection. 3 Saturday, September 25 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner In segovia, a World Heritage site which figures prominently in the life and work of Ignacio Zuloaga, we ll be greeted at our hotel by members of the Zuloaga family, who will orient us to this fascinating city. Visit the Cathedral, the last Gothic building constructed in Spain; the Alcázar fortress with stunning views of the city; the Roman Aquaduct, an engineering achievement dating back almost 2,000 years; and San Juan de los Caballeros, the city s oldest church, today housing ceramic works by Zuloaga s uncle, Daniel, along with paintings and drawings by both artists. In the evening, we ll enjoy a special dinner of local Segovian specialities hosted by Professor Ignacio Suárez- Zuloaga of the Fundación Zuloaga. Sunday, September 26 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner The walled medieval town of pedraza de la sierra has one of the most beautiful main squares in Spain. The castle, built in the 13th century, has an imposing keep and moat. Purchased and restored in 1926 by Ignacio Zuloaga to serve as his studio, today the castle s tower houses the Zuloaga Museum. After lunch, we continue to bilboa on the Bay of Biscay, our home for the next two nights. After a panoramic overview of the city you will be escorted through the Guggenheim Museum, Frank Gehry s titanium masterpiece that recalls Bilboa s shipbuilding and steel-manufactuaring past. See the collections of 20th-century art and a special exhibition of largescale contemporary sculpture by the Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor (b. 1954). Bilboa is the capital of Spain s Basque region, and we ll sample some of the local specialities at dinner. Monday, September 27 Breakfast & Lunch We reunite with the Zuloaga family in zumaia, Ignacio Zuloaga s birthplace and the site of his summer home and studio. Built on the ruins of a 12th century monastery, today the studio houses part of his remarkable art collection; works by Goya, Rodin, and Zuberan number among the artist s own pieces. The nearby Laia Craft Museum contains traditional handicrafts as well as contemporary arts. Dinner tonight is at your leisure. Tuesday, September 28 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner On our way to Barcelona, we ll stop for sightseeing and lunch in zaragoza, located on the banks of the Ebro river in the beautiful Aragon region. Awash with buildings dating from the time of the Romans and Moors, this Northern Spanish gem is famous for its trilogy of landmarks: the Basílica del Pilar, La Seo Catherdral, and the Aljafería Palace. We continue to barcelona, the most cosmopolitan and avant-garde city in Spain, and our home for the next three nights. Wednesday, September 29 Breakfast & Lunch Begin the day with a guided walk through the atmospheric mediaval streets of Barcelona s fascinating Barri Gòtic. Visit the district s squares, old buildings, and Roman ruins, and learn about the quarter s history and people. Next we re on the trail of Spain s most famous architect, Antoni Gaudí ( ), with visits to some of the most emblematic works of this visionary from Barcelona s Modernista (Art Nouveau) period. In the afternoon, we ll journey to Montjuïc, a hill-top park with fabulous panoramic views of the city. The stately Palau Nacional, the central pavilion of the 1929 World s Fair, is now home to the Museu Nacional d Art de Catalunya, boasting one of the world s most extensive collections of Romanesque art, and the Font Màgica, a huge fountain that comes alive with a spectacular, choreographed show of music, lights, and water. Dinner tonight is at your leisure. Thursday, September 30 Breakfast & Dinner Pay homage to the 20th-century s most acclaimed artist at the Museu Picasso, highlighting Pablo Picasso s ( ) formative years from precocious schoolbook sketches and powerful family portraits to selected works from his Blue and Rose periods. Lunch is on your own with time for shopping, strolling, and sightseeing, before our farewell dinner. Friday, October 1 Depart Barcelona for Dulles International airport, with shuttle connection to Evergreen Museum & Library in Baltimore.
