1 Harmonizing Street Names Following the municipal merger creating the new City of Sherbrooke, numerous streets had to be renamed to avoid repetition and confusion in public security and other matters. Also, the names of several major routes across the City change from one borough to the next and civic numbers vary inconsistently, which can create problems finding addresses during an emergency or during the delivery of parcels and the like. The City of Sherbrooke has 1775 street names and odonyms, 531 of which are targeted by the harmonization project. Of those 531, 195 will be given entirely new names and 118 will have slight changes to their names such as the removal of a compass point or the addition of a first name. On October 18, 2004, City Council adopted the list of street names that must be changed. THE HARMONIZING PROCESS An information brochure was mailed to the general population, and a letter and information brochure were sent to landowners living outside of the area. Citizens were consulted through a mail-back coupon included in the brochure. Information was made available on our Web site. The public was provided with a hotline for questions and comments. Meetings with the borough councils were held to analyze comments from the general population. On March 21, 2005, after the consultation process, the city council adopted the new street names. A list of these changes follows. FURTHER STEPS Council approval of the new names was the end of one stage and beginning of a major undertaking for City departments, Canada Post, the Groupe Service Client 9-1-1, the Commission de toponymie du Québec and several Quebec government departments whose computer and administrative systems have to be programmed to handle the new addresses. The amount of work to do (the following list is not exhaustive) in the coming months is daunting, because it involves: changing 313 street names (18% of the City s streets); subdividing several postal codes into an urban format in Brompton and Saint-Élie-d Orford, where some postal codes are still rural; correcting incongruencies in routes that cross the City to achieve one street name (a new name) and correcting civic numbers to achieve a logical sequence. This work will be carried out in cooperation with Canada Post. MAY 2006: NEW STREET NAMES TAKE EFFECT In some cases, changes will include the name of the street, the civic number, the postal code, and the name of the City. All addresses in the new city will carry the city name Sherbrooke. INFORMING THE PUBLIC In early 2006, the City of Sherbrooke and Canada Post will advise you on how to proceed if you are affected by an address change. Wait to receive this information before making any changes! It is very important not to make any changes before May The exact date will be specified later. Since the City of Sherbrooke is working in cooperation with various departments, ministries and agencies, address changes will be communicated to them automatically. YOU WON T HAVE TO ADVISE THEM. WE LL DO IT FOR YOU! A list of such organizations will be published closer to the change date. Also, Canada Post will handle and deliver mail carrying your old address for a period of six months after the change date at no direct cost to you. This applies to both residences and businesses. Thank you for your cooperation! 115
