1 Certified Nurse Assistant Class Syllabus COURSE DESCRIPTION Throughout the program the adult students will study medical terminology, health science and information related to health care which will include: all body systems (cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, etc.), aging and geriatrics, death and dying, CPR, basic first aid, nursing assessments, prevention of infection, and taking vital signs. Clinicals will offer many experiences and offer many opportunities in the health care field. Clinicals also focus on hands-on patient care to prepare the adult student for competencies necessary to become certified. Students are to be here at 7:15 a.m. and will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m.; classes are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS Week #1 thru Week #5 we will cover the role of the C.N.A.; ethical and legal responsibilities; orientation of C.N.A. to Long-term care; review math skills and medical terminology. At the end of this course, you will have the ability to care for long-term residents physically and emotionally. Know the role of the C.N.A. Be able to identify ethical and legal responsibilities Understand math problems and conversion. Understand medical terminology, spelling, and definition MAS 1

2 NEEDS AND RESOURCES Required Background To successfully complete this course, you must have a GED or high school diploma, immunizations up to date and be able to give a 100% to this course. Know you are expected to ask questions when you don t understand be able to read, write, and articulate Understand English language and ability to speak English Know that you are to look up answers to lesson plan questions after each unit Materials (most of the items may be purchased at the Dollar Store) To successfully complete this course, you will need the following: Nurse Assistant Student Reference book Diversified Health Occupations book 7th edition for reference Black ink pens, highlighters, pencils, small notebook for notes Large 2 ring binder, small thin plastic 3 ring binder Index cards 2 packs, one spiral Tab dividers Additional Print Resources Death on Dying by Elizabeth Kubler Ross (easy read, small book) Taber s Medical dictionary Medical Terminology 5 th edition by Saunders Online Resources Nursing Assistant Resources On The Web C.N.A. s Empowering C.N.A. s MAS 2

6 General Rules: Students are to be well groomed and mannered, polite and courteous. No Sexual Harassment is tolerated. No Bullying is tolerated. No smoking on campus must leave the premises if smoking. No cell phones please unless told to use for internet. Please do not be loud there are students in the other rooms and these walls are not sound proof. Absenteeism or tardiness will be made up if appropriate hours have not been met by the end of the six week session. Grading Policies: Students will begin a portfolio, if a student has a portfolio started or completed the student may want to attach information from this class. Any extra work will receive points. Tests will be given at least weekly. The three highest grades will go on the AB appendix to be sent to state. Points will be discussed first day of class Grading Scale: 80% is passing; any score less than 80% on a test will be retaken.
