1 The State of the European Public Cloud Market 2015 UPDATE A year ago, startups, early adopters, and test and development professionals were the key markets for European public cloud service providers. Now, there is evidence that corporate IT departments in EMEA are starting to consider public cloud more formally as part of their digital infrastructures. Although concerns about privacy and EU data protection remain, a clearer understanding of legislative requirements and the practical considerations of shared services is apparent. KEY FINDINGS Spending on IaaS in EMEA will rise from $1.6bn in 2014 to $2.2bn in 2015, and is expected to climb to $2.9bn by the end of Western Europe still represents over 80% of the market and service providers, but this will change as other regions start to emerge. While currently small, an increasing proportion of the total market in Europe is expected to be public cloud: scalable, elastic, pay-as-you-go, multi-tenant compute and storage services. More service providers are offering public cloud as part of their portfolios in Europe, although their number is still relatively small when compared with private cloud providers. Five key disruptive factors are influencing the take-up of public cloud services in Europe, including continued expansion and consolidation, data protection concerns and forthcoming EU legislation, pricing models and service consumption, local language support and data jurisdiction, and the move to the application layer as service providers look beyond infrastructure.
