1 HERO BIKE FESTIVAL 2015 PROGRAM SATURDAY 20 HERO XCO VAL GARDENA 10 AM S. Cristina Val Gardena, Nordic Skiing Centre of Monte Pana Make way for the new stars! The XCO Val Gardena opens the HERO 2015 World Marathon Week: a cross-country race on a 4 km circuit and 160 hm elevation gain. Bikers will have to complete the circuit various times depending on their category. As can be expected from an Olympic discipline, athletes will face hard, steep climbs and technical, demanding downhill rides. All this set against the backdrop of stunning views. The Val Gardena XCO is part of the cross-country South Tyrol Championship. It attracts numerous pro and amateur bikers to the starting line. However, the limelight is directed on the local youth. HERO has devised a race which acts as a stepping stone towards higher goals. Both bikers and audience will have a time to remember thanks to the spectacular location of the Nordic Skiing Centre in Monte Pana, at the foot of the Sassolungo, Val Gardena s symbol. Antonio square A ride down memory lane: the Amarcord bike The mountain bike as we know it was the last evolutionary step of the bike or the velocipede, as it was known at the start of the last century. Take a stroll back in time with us to celebrate the HERO Bike Festival: around 20 members of the period bike club bici d epoca, dressed in jerseys of the time, will showcase their historic bikes, genuine heirlooms from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. We ll travel back to the origins of the bike, the birth of the mountain bike and its use and development in the Dolomites. Videos from that period, live music with Noluntas, interviews and stories of experts will bring us a somewhat vintage and ancient atmosphere. Unmissable. 2 DOMENICA 21 SELLARONDA BIKE DAY 08:30 AM - 03:30 PM 4 passes around the Sella Group Biking in the mountains, surrounded by silence. In the last ten years, the roads of the four Dolomite passes have been witness to a magnificent, yet ever so quiet, event. The Sellaronda Bike Day: on this day no traffic is allowed on the roads and 20,000 (yes, you ve read that right!) bikers swarm onto the roads of Passo Sella, Passo Gardena, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Campolongo. This isn t a race. This isn t a competition. Therefor no registration is needed. It s a long bike ride around the Sella Group, in the heart of the Dolomites. From 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. the roads of the four passes will be free of motorised traffic. STARTING POINT: Start from the valley villages around the Sella Group: Canazei, Arabba, Corvara, and Selva Val Gardena. The official starting point in Val Gardena is at the Maciaconi crossroads in Selva on the border to S. Cristina at 8.30 a.m. For safety reasons, please bike anticlockwise. We highly recommend you to use the helmet. HIGHLIGHT: In occasion of the tenth edition of the Sellaronda Bike Day, members of the period bike club bici d epoca will visit S. Cristina Val Gardena at the starting point with their historic bikes. 3 MONDAY 22 PANORAMA TOUR ALPE DI SIUSI 09 AM - 04 PM Start from the Selva Val Gardena Tourism Association Picture-perfect biking More than just a race. In the run up to the HERO, we offer participants accompanied by friends and family the possibility of exploring the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on two wheels. Our mountain bike guides will help you discover mesmerising tracks and a stunning view such as the beautiful scenic view you can lose your gaze in on the Alpe di Siusi Tour. Thanks to the gondola lift in Ortisei, you will save yourself around 800 hm elevation gain and reach the biggest plateau in Europe. Once on the Alpe di Siusi, bike on dirt roads and perfectly groomed and signed paths for beginners and pros for a leisurely bike ride a couple of days before the race. This itinerary is the perfect introduction to mountain bike tours for its short stretches and welcoming huts. In the last decades, the Dolomites have seen a rising number of tourists and mountain lovers coming to visit the region. The time has come to share some insight on the future of this natural area. Our seminar reflects this: a debate on green, sustainable tourism in the Dolomites. The heart of the public debate will be the development of summer tourism and mobility in the Dolomite valleys now that they ve become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will endeavour to answer all those questions which tourism operators have been asking all these years: is this the right direction? Which steps should be taken next to allow green tourism to flourish to the benefit of people and nature? These are only some of the questions our experts will try to answer. Guided mountain bike scenic tour around the monumental Sella Group. Take the lift facilities to reach the Gardena, Campolongo, Pordoi, and Sella passes. Start from Selva Val Gardena in a clockwise direction accompanied by expert and professional guides who will make this a safe and fun experience from all sides. Stop at one of the gourmet restaurants for one or more dishes devised by Adelheid Larch, nutritionist, from Merano. HeroZero food for the best! 5 TUESDAY 23 DIRNDL & LEDERHOSEN PARTY 08 PM Selva Val Gardena, Piazza Nives Your typical South Tyrolean party... Traditional music and clothing have always been part of the life of the people living at the bottom of the Dolomites: we are happy to invite all the guests of our valleys to take part in the Dirndl & Lederhosen Party, the South Tyrolean evening with live music from the Vollbluet. Join us and listen to music which will put a lively spring into your step, taking you to danz Walzer, foxtrot and much more...in pure Tyrolean style. To animate you even more the Schuhplattler from Tramin will present some of their folk dances, composed of energetic moves, almost acrobatic, and of course dressed in typical Lederhosen. Lest you think we ve forgotten your grumbling stomachs, you can also try dishes such as Schlutzkrapfen and fanedes offered by traditional mountain huts, which to this very day still produce local delicacies. The e-bike first came on the market a couple of years ago. It now allows more and more people to experience the joys of biking in the mountains. We ve prepared a scenic tour for those of you wishing to experience the e-bike around the four Dolomite passes of Gardena, Campolongo, Pordoi, and Sella. Using the lift facilities, we will reach the top of the mountain and from there discover the huts, revel in the beautiful Dolomite landscape and then bike downhill on forest paths and paved roads in absolute safety. You have to be well trained to embark on the Sellaronda TOUR: there will be brief climbs on our mtb, while some downhill descents require good technique, mtb skills, agility and control. The track develops on new as well as tried and tested single trails and only connects to the main road on some occasions. 8 WEDNESDAY 24 FARMERS MARKET AND LIVE MUSIC 7 PM S. Cristina Val Gardena Art, tradition and handcrafts... On this evening, the traffic-free area of S. Cristina Val Gardena will host an extraordinary display of many local products by South Tyrolean farmers and craftsmen from Val Gardena. Duvets and pillows of purest of wool, honey and beeswax candles, hay decorations, belt and wallets made with peacock feathers, are just some of the baubles you will find on the stalls of South Tyrolean farmers. You will also get a taste of South Tyrolean Speck and the famous, homemade grappas. You will also admire the works of art of the wood cutter and of the farmer producing butter. Many works by well-known S. Cristina woodworkers and local, handmade products by the Locia and S ancunté protected workshops will also be on display. There are a good 8 Enduro tracks on 34 km and 4,300 hm elevation gain. Start from Selva Val Gardena in a clockwise direction with the aid of lift facilities, accompanied by expert and professional guides who will make this a safe and fun experience from all sides. To kick off the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championship 2015, we ve devised a suggestive opening ceremony, yet striking for its simplicity and symbolism. The athletes will parade with their respective country s flag (representing 50 countries) and the ceremony will reach its apex when the Head of the UCI will declare the race officially open, wishing every athlete all the best in a backdrop of loyal, healthy and fun sport.

Until the next HERO. At the end of the race, the 4,015 bikers are invited to attend the Pasta Party offered by De Cecco. Their guests can purchase a food voucher together with their heroes. A magical moment which will have seen all bike lovers share experiences and special moments. The main protagonists of the finale are our heroes, together with artists, acrobats, and musicians, all coming together in one big party.

The HERO Bike Festival can only go down in history after the last event in our programme, the Enduro: a rush of adrenaline, especially for our younger bikers.
