1 DANIDA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME COURSE FOR EMERGING LEADERS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR 25th 29 th August, Nairobi, Kenya. THE ESSENCE OF THE COURSE Leaders are individuals who establish direction for a working group of individuals, who gain commitment from these group members to this direction, and who then motivate these members to achieve the direction s outcome. Jay A. Conger Organizations are constantly refining their cutting edge in technology, strategy, innovation, competitiveness and customer satisfaction among others. To do these, both private and public organizations need young, energetic and dynamic new managers to drive these strategic initiatives to a sustainable end. Injecting new blood in management ensures a well maintained pool of leaders for succession, bold paradigm shifts and thereby sustainable customer satisfaction. The need for up skilling new managers is therefore the result of the exponential business growth that organizations in this region are experiencing. Organizations are increasingly discovering that leadership is about change, and change is constant. Therefore, as they expand to meet the needs of their clients, they will require specialized leadership skills on all levels to handle the increasinglyaware client. With the world having metamorphosized into a global village, and the need for an organization s products or services extends beyond its geographical borders, organizations are hard pressed to meet their clients at their point of need wherever they may be. Furthermore, the market continues to demand differentiated services from their companies of choice, necessitating a refined distribution channels to each far and wide. These unique and ever growing needs can only be met and exceeded if an organization has a pipeline of talent to reach out to their consumers. Thus the need for new managers with fresh insights in provision of distinctive solutions to discerning clientele. New young managers are also part of the organizations talent management agenda to ensure that corporations make good use of the human capital they have. Experience has shown that though promotion into management is an exciting rite of passage for any new graduate, there are many pitfalls to avoid as one sharpens their skills in an all-round way. While the new manager has been recognized for the technical skills, self and other people management is a minefield. 1

2 There is also the fallacy that leadership is more superior to management; a blind spot that may be a snare for the emerging young leader. It is for such as these that this program has been designed. Being an effective people manager requires not only excellent technical skills, but also social and interpersonal skills to get the leader and the team ahead. The need to train emerging leaders stems from evidence that the mistakes that a new manager are very costly not only to the individual but also to the organization. Whereas a manager delivers with the assistance of other departments, there is need for new managers to understand the concept of profit centres for each of their projects, to ensure maximum results. Consequently, a new manager needs guidance en-route to the ladder of successful leadership. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE This program aims to set the foundations aright on the principles of leadership and management. This will equip the participant with the right tools on which to build on as they rise to higher echelons of leadership. The program intends to bring meaning into the everyday managerial roles and give insight on how refined thought-processes can set an individual into the ladder of leadership. Upon completion of the program, participants will be expected to demonstrate self-awareness in their balanced leadership styles, understand and develop their teams leadership capabilities, and be seen to understand organizational politics by managing their bosses and their team members effectively. LEARNING OBJECTIVES The new manager will embark on the journey of leadership; unearthing the different leadership styles, the art of influencing, the etiquette of business, managing conflict, dealing with stress, among other vital organizational life skills. Also, participants will experience leadership training through combined methodologies, such as through personal growth, conceptual understanding, feedback and skill building. With regard to Leading Self, participants will begin their leadership journey by: Understanding their behavior modes; acknowledging and accepting self for personal growth Discovering the strengths in their leadership styles; reinforcing the positive and striking off the destructive patterns that may be their drawback. Appreciating the 2-sided coin that is leadership and management and how to tap into this relationship. 2

4 Case study discussions Syndicate groups PROGRAM BENEFITS The program offers a combination of tools in the acquisition of knowledge, such lectures, classroom discussions, working sessions and peer group learning. A strong emphasis is laid on concepts and practices that can really work in the Kenyan business environment. WHO WILL HOST THE COURSE? The course will be hosted by Strathmore University in collaboration with Danida Fellowship Centre. WHAT IS STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY? Strathmore University is a private university based in Nairobi, Kenya. It was started as an Advanced level college in 1961 by a group of professionals who formed a charitable educational trust (now the Strathmore Educational Trust). In August 2002 the Commission of Higher Education awarded Strathmore a Letter of Interim Authority to operate as a University with a Faculty of Commerce and a Faculty of Information Technology. The first undergraduate students to enroll in these faculties completed their 4-year degree course in December 2004 and graduated in August In June 2007, Kenya's Commission for Higher Education approved the award of a charter to Strathmore University. Currently, Strathmore University offers open programs in Accountancy, Administration, Finance, Management and Information Technology. It also prepares and delivers customized programs to various organisations in response to the needs of the market. WHAT IS DANIDA FELLOWSHIP CENTRE? Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) manages and implements the Danida supported Fellowship Program, which supplies training in support of capacity development in Denmark s priority countries worldwide. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE COURSE? This five days course targets young and emerging manager with leadership prospects in businesses in East Africa which are affiliated with a private sector development program or project supported by Denmark. They are first time managers and supervisors in seeking refined skills in managing organizational resources to achieve maximum results. 4

5 THE TUTORS: The courses will be arranged and facilitated by Strathmore University in collaboration with DFC. The facilitators on this programme will have a diverse, strong and distinguished background thus enriching the participants learning experience. Dr. Monica Kerretts-Makau program leader Dr. Monica Kerretts-Makau is currently Change Management Advisor Judiciary Transformation Secretariat Kenya. She is also a senior lecturer at Strathmore Business School. She holds a PhD in Public Policy and Regulation from the University of New South Wales Australia where she was also teaching. Dr. Kerretts has over the past three years been involved in advisory work for Governments in the East African region on public policy and regulation and has also been involved in the ICT Policy Development Process in Kenya. Privy to this Dr. Kerretts worked in the private sector as Regional Manager Knowledge Management for KPMG East Africa and in Standard Chartered Bank as Manager Institutional Banking. Her academic qualifications also include a Master of Science (Msc) in Business Management and Information Systems with a focus on Knowledge Management Systems for Corporate Organizations from the University of Salford UK. She completed her undergraduate studies at Daystar University Kenya, where she was awarded a Cum Laude degree in Communications and Economics. Dr. David Wang ombe Dr. David Wangombe has lectured Accounting and Finance courses both at university and tertially level for over 15 years. He is a BA (Hons) and MBA graduate of the University of Nairobi and a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA (K)). Currently he is The Dean, School of Management and Commerce, Strathmore University, Kenya. He has authored several books used at both university and professional accounting studies including Advanced Accounting, Theory and Practice and most recently Fundamentals of Accounting. He has also written several cases for teaching particularly business executives. Dr. Wangombe has several years experience in consultancy and executive training particularly in field of financial management. He is a consultant trainer with several organizations including, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in MDI Training program, Kenya Commercial Bank and Strathmore Research and Consultancy Company (SRCC). Dr. Wangombe is an alumnus of the International Faculty Development Program (IFDP) of IESE Business School. Dr. Hazel Gachunga Dr. Hazel Gachoka Gachunga is a faculty member at Strathmore Business School. She is also a lecturer in the School of Business in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She has considerable teaching and research experience in the areas of Leadership, Human Resource Management, and Organizational Behaviour amongst others. She is a holder of a Doctorate from the University of Nairobi. She has also conducted extensive research in the areas of leadership from the University of Sheffield, Institute of Work Psychology. 5

6 Hazel has published widely in the areas of organizational politics, human resource management, organizational justice and leadership. Hazel is also a lead consultant in the evaluation of companies for the Company of Year Awards (COYA/OPI) hosted by the Kenya Institute of Management. This has given her a wealth of exposure to the various leadership styles of participating companies. She is also a key assessor for the Manager of the Year Awards (MOYA). She has carried out numerous consultancy assignments. Dr. Fredrick Ogola Dr. Fredrick Ogola is a full time lecturer at Strathmore Business School (SBS) in the department of Strategy. He has a Research and Teaching visiting position in Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai and Xavier Labor Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, India. Fredrick has collaborated for three years with the Institute for Social Innovation in ESADE Business School, Barcelona Spain on various research projects and in the field of teaching. He is also a member of European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) and European Academy of Business In Society (EABIS). His research interests include the social responsibility of financial institutions in developing countries and anti-poverty programs. In teaching, Fredrick has taught Business Ethics, Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation at ESADE Business School. He has also co-taught Senior Leadership Management Program (SLMP) at SBS. Fredrick is a social scientist with specialization in Psychology and Philosophy with academic interests in strategic management and sustainability strategies. He obtained his PhD in Management Sciences at ESADE Business School, Barcelona Spain in April VENUE Strathmore University is a constantly growing campus with ultra-modern facilities. It has world-class facilities in the Green building in Strathmore Business School, the venue for the training. Accommodation will be at a conveniently located hotel. HOW IS THE COURSE FUNDED? The course is fully funded by the Danida Fellowship Centre. This covers accommodation, allowances, study fee, course materials, and for international participants airfare and insurances. HOW DO YOU APPLY? Application procedures follow the procedures stipulated in Guidelines for Danida Fellowships. The guidelines as well as the fellowship form are available at the Royal Danish Embassy or they can be downloaded at DFC s web site at fellowship form is to be filled in by the applicant, and endorsed by the Danida programme/project and the Embassy Desk Officer in order to ensure that the training is within the framework of national plans for capacity development. The Embassy will forward the forms to DFC. Selection of course participants will be carried out by DFC. 6
