1 St. Clair County Recycling Directory St. Clair County Health Department Sponsored by the Illinois EPA Printed on Recycled Paper Revised May 2014

2 GENERAL RECYCLING TIPS Buy recycled products. Reuse and Recycle whenever possible. Use reusable products rather than disposable (i.e. dinner plates vs. paper plates). Use reusable bags for all shopping. Buy in bulk. Large sizes deliver more product with less packaging waste and is usually more economical. Pack yourself or your children a waste free lunch. Put food in reusable containers rather than a disposable bag. Leave your grass clippings lie - don t bag them. As the clippings decay, they return important nutrients to the soil. Start a compost pile. Recycle paper - Support local school paper recycling programs. 2

4 Introduction Thank you for recycling! Your actions do make a difference. Making new products from recycled materials instead of virgin materials conserves natural resources, saves landfill space and reduces the pollution created in the manufacturing process. For example, by making new steel cans out of recycled material, energy use is reduced by 74%, air pollution by 85%, solid waste by 95% and water pollution by 76%. Keep recycling working by purchasing products made from recycled materials. Contact the Office of Pollution Prevention at (618) for information on waste reduction and recycling for schools, businesses and homes, alternatives to leaf burning, air pollution, ozone alerts, reducing household hazardous waste, school education materials, classroom presentations etc. Visit for more out of state or mail in recycling programs. General Rules ALUMINUM CANS: Rinse, flatten and separate from steel cans. GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS: Rinse, remove lids and separate by color. NEWSPAPER: Inserts are acceptable. Don t let the newspaper get wet, it will not be recyclable. PLASTICS: Rinse, remove lids and flatten. STEEL CANS: Rinse, remove labels and flatten. FERROUS METAL INCLUDES: Tin and steel (anything a magnet can stick to). NON-FERROUS METAL INCLUDES: Scrap aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel. OFFICE PAPER: Includes junk mail and cereal boxes 4

The burning of household trash is a violation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act. Some municipalities and unicorporated St. Clair County allow burning of landscape waste. Contact your City or Village Hall for specific restrictions. Otherwise landscape waste may only be burned if all of the following conditions are present: It is burned on the site where generated It is burned when atmospheric conditions will readily dissipate contaminants Burning does not create a visibility hazard It is not burned in a municipality that has enacted ordinances which restrict or ban landscape waste burning It is also illegal for any business to burn waste materials without an IEPA permit. Building contractors, landscapers and other businesses that generate wood and other easily combustible materials are often found violating this law. 11

12 SAVE ENERGY RECYCLE Did you know that when you recycle, you not only reduce the amount of waste going into the landfills, but you also save energy...and more. Here are some fun facts about energy and recycling. One pound of recycled steel saves enough energy to light a 60 watt incandescent bulb for 24 hours. For every glass bottle recycled, we save enough energy to light a 100 watt incandescent bulb for four hours...or enough energy to light an equivalent 23 watt compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) for more than 16 hours! All of the materials recycled in Illinois each year save enough energy to provide heat and light for 400,000 Illinois homes. Recycling one ton of glass saves the equivalent in energy of 10 gallons of oil. Every ton of paper recycled saves enough energy to heat and air condition the average American home for at least six months. Recycling two aluminum cans saves the same amount of energy it takes to power a personal computer for one work day. Tossing away an aluminum can wastes as much energy as pouring out half that can s volume of gasoline. Source: Illinois Department of Energy and Recycling 12
