1 Vita Gregory P. Sherman, Ph.D. Instructional Design and Evaluation Consulting Associate Professor of Educational Technology School of Teacher Education & Leadership Radford University P.O. Box 6959 Radford, VA (540) Home Address 1712 Grove Ave. Radford, VA Cell: Education Ph.D. Learning & Instructional Technology Arizona State University 1994 M.Ed. Educational Media Arizona State University 1991 B.A.Ed Sec. Education: General Science Arizona State University 1985 Evaluation and Education Career Experiences Instructional Design & Evaluation Consultant: NSTA Present Throughout the past eight years, I have helped lead the design and development of a variety of web-based and blended professional development programs for members of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). These programs have included asynchronous web-based instructional modules, synchronous web seminar experiences, face-to-face training exercises, and a blending of all three implementation environments to facilitate specific program objectives. In addition to designing and developing training materials for adult learners, I have also been responsible for conducting both formative and summative product and program evaluations for a variety of NSTA training initiatives. Currently, I am the lead evaluator on a program designed to help secondary science teachers integrate STEM-related career awareness strategies into their practice. I also recently completed a program evaluation project designed to help NSTA integrate science and engineering videos developed by the National Department of Defense Education Program into their collection of online professional development resources. Some of the evaluation reports have been published in refereed journals.
2 Instructional Design & Evaluation Consultant: Other Contracts I have worked as an instructional design and evaluation consultant for a number of different organizations during the past 18 years. The list below presents brief descriptions of a representative sample of contracts I have completed: Edvantia, Inc.: I worked on an evaluation team to collect and report data associated with the effects of professional development programs on practicing educators. Certified Medical Representatives, Inc. [CMRI]: I worked as an instructional designer for CMRI developing graduate-level self-directed distance learning materials for a variety of courses, including Business Ethics and an overview of the pharmaceutical industry in the United States. Southwest Virginia Professional Education Consortium: I served as the project evaluator for the VDOE-funded SWVAPEC. New Jersey Professional Education Port: I developed video-based tutorials for New Jersey math teachers in the area of standards-based instructional strategies. Virginia Educational Technology Alliance [VETA] Evaluation-1998 to 2000 Academic Years: This project included the program evaluation of individual technology integration projects at seven different Virginia institutions of higher education. I designed and implemented the program evaluations, including all data collection instruments. I was responsible for writing the annual reports. TRO, Inc. PLATO Computer-Based Instruction Evaluation: I evaluated PLATO computer-based courseware in a variety of educational settings, including K-8 computer labs and self-contained classrooms, community after school programs, and WorkKeys workforce training. I collected and analyzed data from client computer management systems, interviewed stakeholders, and wrote evaluation reports to inform TRO, Inc. corporate practice, policy and product development. R.R. Donnelley Train-the-Trainer Workshops: I developed and implement trainthe-trainer workshops for human resource employees at R.R. Donnelley s Roanoke, VA publishing campus. Intel, Corp. s Corporate Logistics Division Instructional Design Multimedia Projects: I designed and produced orientation videotaped presentations for employees and clients of Intel's North American Distribution Center. I also videotaped, edited, and digitized footage for a variety of multimedia computerbased tutorial programs, as well as conducted needs assessments for various operations within the logistics process to aid in the development of computerbased training materials. Associate Professor, Radford University Present I currently teach graduate instructional technology courses in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership at RU. In addition, I conduct research on variables affecting the efficacy of technology-supported professional development environments as well as specific technology-related factors that improve the quality of in-class as well as distance learning instruction. I also have experiencing teaching evaluation courses as well as science methods courses. Greg Sherman s Vita Page 2
3 Educational Research Analyst, Radford University I managed a variety of assessment, evaluation and research projects through the Dean s Office in the College of Education and Human Development. Some of these projects involved the development and implementation of web-based data collection tools and procedures. Instructional Technology Consultant, Northern Arizona University I was responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating a number of professional development programs as part of the federally-funded Preparing Tomorrow s Teachers to Use Technology initiative. Education Reform Consultant, Innovative Designs for Education, Inc I worked for a year implementing and evaluating a model of education reform called The Learner Active, Technology-Infused Classroom. This model focused on strategies for helping learners take control of their own learning experiences within meaningful, purposeful problem-based, technology-supported learning environments. I worked in K-12 environments as well as teacher education programs in the New York City/New Jersey area. Instructional Technology Assistant Professor, Virginia Tech My primary responsibility at Virginia Tech included developing and implementing a hybrid distance learning instructional technology master s degree program for practicing teachers. This was a portfolio-driven program that enrolled multiple cohort groups throughout the state of Virginia. My research and teaching responsibilities at VT included graduate courses in principles of instructional design, program and product evaluation, educational software evaluation, and instructional technology for teachers. Instructional Technology Assistant Professor, Emporia State University My responsibilities at ESU included teaching undergraduate instructional media courses as well as graduate instructional design and multimedia development courses. Some graduate courses were facilitated via distance learning technologies (interactive television combined with web-based material). I also helped develop and implement a portfolio-based instructional technology graduate program for practicing professional educators. Junior High School Science Teacher, Mesa [AZ] Public Schools My experiences included all aspects of teaching in the public school setting. I taught primarily life science courses, but I have experience teaching physical science and drama as well. Throughout my nine years at Hendrix Junior High, I developed and implemented a number of technology-supported instructional programs for my courses, including individual computer-based programs, individual and group interactive video programs, and instructional videotapes. I was also involved in the development of the school district's new junior high school science curriculum, which included the creation of a science essential skills information network in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Education.
