Knowledge emerges only through invention and reinvention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other (p. 72). Freire s quote underscores my personal teaching philosophy: that true education takes place through praxis and collaboration. I live and teach to the concept of Ubuntu, that we are not single actors in this world; rather, we are in others as others are in us, in ways that encourage unity and togetherness. As an educator, I am committed to: community; teaching social justice; critical engaged pedagogy; literacy; and cultivating responsive students, who are partners in critical dialogue, Socratic questioners, compassionate listeners, and practitioners of continuous and critical reflection. Bio Dana M. Stachowiak, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Diversity/Multicultural at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she teaching courses in diversity and multicultural education and instructional coaching. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Department of al Leadership and Cultural Foundations, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Women s

2 and Gender Studies. Dr. Stachowiak s main research interests are in gender studies in education, queer theory, social justice education, literacy education, multicultural education, and arts-based forms of research and learning. Dr. Stachowiak has published numerous peer-reviewed chapters in books on gender studies, education, and curriculum of place. She is currently co-editing a special edition of The International Journal of Critical Pedagogy on teaching social justice in teacher education programs.
