This handbook is produced to assist students enrolled in our programs; and is as up to date as we can make it at the time of publication. It should be read in conjunction with the official University regulations pertaining to programs offered by the University. Any student who has not passed a course after three attempts may be excluded from the program for a period of up to two years. Final Supplementary Assessment: Students who receive an MF grade in their final Semester may apply to the Program Coordinator within 7 days of the publication of results for supplementary assessment if that course is the only outstanding course required to complete the degree and the student has not been found guilty of plagiarism in that Semester. The highest grade attainable will be a Pass grade. If you prefer a more practical approach to learning, you will excel in this hands on program, with courses focused on engineering principles that are implemented to solve design problems. From your second year of study you will undertake a specialisation in Civil, Mining or Mechanical Engineering, developing skills that will enable you to undertake engineering design, cost and analyse project resources; conduct tests and research; and gather and analyse data to support decision making and reporting requirements. Upon graduation you will work in positions requiring expertise in planning, designing and construction. The School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering is committed to producing creative, engineering technologists who have a good knowledge of social, environmental, economic and organisational issues that are necessary to obtain employment as an engineering technologist and to be admitted as an Engineering Technologist with Engineers Australia*. As a graduate of this program you may choose to undertake our Master of Engineering Technology which is specifically designed to facilitate our Bachelor of Engineering Technology graduates gaining Professional Engineer status. The main characteristic of this program is applied design in a systems context; and from your second year, you will specialise in Civil Engineering. Students must obtain at least 8 weeks of suitable practical experience before being eligible to graduate. This experience should exposes the student to professional engineers and engineering technologists carrying out their typical duties. Perhaps you'll end up in renewable energies, working with robots or in the automotive industry. You'll learn how engineers can help solve real life problems. You'll also find out how to cost and analyse project resources, conduct tests and research and gather and analyse data. You'll use these skills to make important decisions and write reports. You'll have a hands-on role in the construction process, in whichever industries you choose to work. You'll be involved in design specification, development, research, evaluation, manufacture, installation, testing, operation, maintenance and management of machines and systems. The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)(Honours) provides you with a core of basic analytical and communication skills, common to all branches of engineering, which will help you achieve this outcome, and features a significant research project content in the final year.
