2 FRA: Principal s Report Dear All Congratulations to WhereB2, I m really pleased with their enthusiasm, passion and of course success. Also, I would like to say well done to our winners in the Fowey Festival writing competition. We have had a very successful Opening Evening for Yr 8 and have tried out our new interim reports. Having received feedback we will amend our format slightly and issue Yr9 reports early next week. I d like to announce that Miss Jennie Hick will be joining us at Senior Leadership level as a consultant Senior Leader. Miss Hick has vast experience of Senior Leadership, and is an Advance Skills teacher and expert in teaching, learning and assessment. Miss Hick will work with us two days a week over the next year. Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend. Best wishes Martin Dale Principal
3 Cornwall SumDog Competition REPORT BY Mrs Miller On Friday 18 th March at 8am the Cornwall SumDog competition started. The competition involved students answering up to 1000 Mathematical questions and lets students compete against students from all across the world. The Cornwall competition takes the pupils scores from the questions they answer and rank them against each other. 4 FRA: creative Music Student of the Week: Jack Murphy REPORT BY Miss Giles Jack showed excellent music skills this week when he learnt how to play the bass guitar in one lesson and then performed Rock and the Clock with his group. He showed excellent musicianship and performing skills, very well done! Yr 8 Dance Student of the Week: Ashleigh Allison REPORT BY Miss Dennes Ashleigh is the Yr 8 Dance Student of the Week for her determination and ideas. Her group choreographed a dance piece using a prop and were extremely imaginative, they chose hospital as their theme and selected clear actions to perform. They used a range of choreographic devices to develop their piece and performed with good rhythm and timing. Ashleigh was key in leading this group and showed excellent understanding of the skills required. Yr 7 Dance Students of the Week: Callum Palfrey and Harry Moyse REPORT BY Miss Dennes Callum and Harry are the dance students of the week for working extremely well in their groups and being creative in developing assisted jumps, taking each others weight and performing lifts. They understood the safety issues and observed an inspiring video about a range of lifts which could be completed they then proceeded to work on producing some excellent lifts with tension and control.
5 FRA: creative Art Student of the Week: Lily Carmichael REPORT BY Mr Law We have chosen this piece to celebrate the work of Lily and her response to the wood block print by Durer. Student practice their mark making and tonal values skills by giving the famous rhino a new skin. Textures are drawn from a collection of surfaces students made for homework. Lily has used a wide range of marks and tonal values throughout her project. She has also added her research facts and her opinions of some of Durer s work to the rhino s armoured skin well mastered Lily!
6 FRA: creative Fowey Festival Writing Competition Winners! REPORT BY Mrs Guest FRA are delighted to have won a range of awards for this year's Fowey Festival writing competition winners include: Katie Walker (Yr7) won the Highly Commended award for her poem 'The River' Eliot Toms (Yr7) won second with his story 'Sailing on The River' Peyton Fulwood (Yr8) won second for her poem 'I am River Fowey' Rory Winch (Yr8) won first prize for his story 'There was once a bike rider' Ross Jezard (Yr9) won second for his story 'Fowey Regatta' Hannah Abbiss (Yr10) won the Special Judges award for her story 'Biting Waters' Winners will receive prizes and certificates in a special presentation from the children's author Tanya Landman on Thursday 12th May Mrs Guest also took Peyton, Ross and Hannah to St Austell Radio Station today to record their writing so it can be played during Fowey Festival which celebrates art and literature.

8 FRA: inspired Success for FRA Young Enterprise students at the Cornwall Innovation Awards! It s certainly been an exciting year for Year 10 Business Studies students from Fowey River Academy! The students have created a Young Enterprise Company and have been competing in local and national competitions throughout the academic year. This week, five representatives of their team reached the Finals of the Cornwall Innovation Awards, competing against 12 other Cornish schools and colleges. Hosted by RNAS Culdrose at Helston, and compered by Daphne Skinnard of BBC Radio Cornwall, this event is the showpiece of the Young Enterprise Programme in Cornwall, with the winner set to represent Cornwall at the regional final of this national competition. The team came away with an array of certificates and awards, including Best Use of IT and Best Presentation, and were overall Runner Up Company in Cornwall, having been pipped at the post by The Seaweed Gardeners of Truro School. Business Studies Teacher Ms Wehmeyer also won the prestigious award of Young Enterprise Centre Lead Teacher of the Year.
9 FRA: enriched Yr 9 DofE Practice Expedition REPORT BY Mrs Wakeham We had a superb weekend with 25 Yr 9 students on their practice expedition. Day 1 Students walked 14K on lanes and footpaths, camped at Penhale camp site near Fowey. Once their tents were set up it was dinner time, cooked meals were cooked using trangia stoves. Day 2 Students walked 13K on coastal paths, lanes to finish at Charlestown in the afternoon. They will now be planning and preparing for their assessed expedition in the St Wenn/Bodmin area on 21st-22nd May. FOR MORE PHOTOGRAPHS HEAD TO THE WEBSITE!
10 FRA: enriched Rambling Club REPORT BY Mr Horton Rambling - a chance to explore the stunning surroundings we are lucky to have near our Academy in Fowey and the local villages. So far we have visited Readymoney Beach in Fowey and have taken in the amazing view over Bodinnick and the River Fowey by marching through Station Woods. Furture walks will include the Gribben Head and Menabilly. Rambling is a very sociable club, come with friends or make new ones whilst out being active, healthy (apart from the ice creams) and experiencing all that the local area has to offer. 12 FRA: competitive enriched Athletics Update REPORT BY Mr Horton The Athletics season is underway with competitions having taken place at Par track. The first Wednesday saw Year 8's take the stage for the opening event. Lewis Ovens jumped well for the boys high jump finishing 3rd and Jamie Stanlake achieved the same position throwing the Discus. On the track Olly Swiggs sprinted into 2nd place in the 100m and Oscar Simmons showed true Cardiovascular Endurance to finish 3rd in a tough 800m competition. Alisha Murphy exploded into 2nd place in the girls long jump, and Nancy Mansell capped off a fine day for the Academy by Finishing in 1st place in the girls high jump. The following week saw the turn for years 7 & 9. Year 7 debutants performed well across the board and represented the Academy with passion and commitment. Stand out performance from Anna Treseder who placed 2nd in the 1500m continuing her fine form from the Race for Life held last month at the Academy. For year 9 girls Issey Blackie jumped into 3rd place in the high jump and Sasha Alexander sprinted herself into 2nd place in the 300m. Harry Brooks stole the show for year 9 boys striding to victory in the 400m and claimng 1st place by at least a dozen strides in a time of seconds. Well done all students that took part and represented the Academy! Year 10 were on work experience for the first event so hit the track next Wednesday for their 2016 opener. Events will run as follows at Par Track: Wednesday 4th May Y8 & Y pm Wednesday 18th May Y7 & Y pm Wednesday 25th May Y7, Y8, Y9 & Y pm School Games Qualifier Transport and a late bus will be provided to all the above fixtures. Athletics Practice runs on a Tuesday open to any student - meet in the sports hub!!
