FROM THE INSIDE OUT (CONTRARY TO APPEARANCE) THE VALUE OF ALL THINGS LIES IN BACHELOR OF ARTS IN INTERIOR DESIGN THEIR PURPOSE Le Corbusier
PG Bison Finalist What is Interior Design? Interior Design is a multifaceted discipline that deals with the design and construction of indoor environments. 28 From inspired concepts through to detailing and project management, Interior Designers are responsible for creating spaces and places that are stimulating, functional, user-centred and sustainable. They are creative problem solvers with an ability to visualise ideas in three dimensions and a strong desire to see their ideas come to life. Interior designers with a three year qualification are entitled to register with the South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions (IID) and enter an exciting industry in the built environment with many career opportunities and areas of specialisation. The profession encompasses a wide range of fields including domestic and residential design, leisure and hospitality, corporate offices, retail environments and exhibition design. Potential employers include Interior Design and architectural practices, shopfitting and furniture manufacturers, exhibition/event companies and the design departments of large corporate institutions, hotel and retail chains. Interior Design at GDC The BA Interior Design Degree is a 360 credit point qualification at NQF level 7 (SAQA ID 63009). It can be completed in three years of full time study. The programme emphasises that Interior Design is a creative problem solving activity that has the potential to affect our responses to living and working environments on a profound level. GDC students are trained to think conceptually, to frame design problems through research and analysis, to apply the design process and to develop design solutions that are innovative & original, socially responsible and technically resolved. As an academic discipline, the programme further enables students to become critical thinkers who can locate and critique the practise of design within contemporary theoretical discourse.
Loerie Award Graduates at GDC have a repertoire of high level skills and can: 30 Produce and present a professional Interior Design portfolio that is highly regarded by industry Plan, research and organise design projects in a signature style Be creative conceptual creators, producers and problem solvers that think outside the box Manipulate and articulate ideas, concepts and information with confidence Create high quality visualisations and technical documentation using advanced software Learning by Doing GDC maintains that programmes based on separate and independent modules or subjects do not teach students how to integrate the various skills needed to be an exceptional designer. At GDC we practice a highly integrated and holistic educational philosophy. The core of the curriculum is made up of two principal components. In the Studio classes, students execute design projects that mirror the practise in industry. The learning is experiential, hands-on, authentic, and exposes students to real-world design. In the Critical Studies classes, the ability to engage meaningfully with the theoretical and critical underpinnings of design is emphasised. Through the writing of essays, students come to grips with existing theory in visual culture and develop critical thinking and academic research skills. Additional enrichment classes, such as computers, visual communication and academic writing, set extra tasks that hone specific skills to support the Studio and Critical Studies components.
autodesk Finalist 32 As a holistic programme, assignments set by either the principal or enrichment classes are assessed according to one or more of the four subjects that make up the programme. This facilitates an awareness of the interrelationship of the many facets that lead to good and responsible design. The four subjects for each year are: Design, which focuses on the creative process and the development of design solutions Communication, which focuses on the ability to visualise and communicate solutions through various media and industry conventions Technology and Professional Practice, which focuses on the technical and technological aspects of design in addition to professional codes of practice Critical Studies, which focuses on a critical understanding of design theory and academic practice Credits and Progression As the curriculum is highly integrated and project-based, students must complete the full year of study (all four subjects of 120 credits) in order to progress to the next level of study. In the event of failure, students are allowed one additional opportunity to enrol and complete the year. It is possible to repeat only the Critical Studies subject, or only the practical subjects (Design, Communication, Technology and Professional Practice) should the student fail only one of these two components of the programme. Articulation On completion of the BA Degree in Interior Design, candidates will be eligible to enrol for an Honours Degree in Interior Design or a cognate field, either at GDC or other registered providers.

LOERIE AWARD What is Graphic Design? Graphic Designers have the important role of communicating ideas though a variety of visual methods. 36 Graphic Design is essentially concerned with the creation and manipulation of imagery and text to communicate a message and is sometimes referred to as Visual Communication. Whether a design encompasses corporate identity design, an advertising campaign, information graphics, packaging a book cover or a complete magazine layout, a Graphic Designer needs to relate imagery and text in a creative and purposeful way. Graphic Designers work with illustration, photography, typography, computer and handgenerated images in order to communicate the desired message. Graphic designers are creative, pay attention to detail, and are lateral thinkers. Areas of employment for Graphic Designers include design consultancies, advertising agencies, exhibition design and signage companies, retail chains, large corporations and print, film, television and electronic media houses. Graphic Design at GDC The BA Graphic Design degree is a 360 credit point qualification at NQF level 7 (SAQA ID 62760). It can be completed in three years of full time study. The purpose of the programme is to develop students into competent and employable designers that specialise in print-based communication. The programme emphasises the ability to form, create and rationalise both design and theoretical argument; as well as the ability to implement and critique print-based design processes. The programme further provides a theoretical and practical foundation in print-based communication for further study.
OKI AWARD Graduates at GDC have a repertoire of high level skills and can: Conceptualise and produce creative design solutions with a personal design philosophy Communicate meaningful design messages in a signature style Create and present a professional print-based design portfolio that stands apart from the rest Operate Graphic Design related computer hardware and software at industry level 38 Articulate and represent ideas and arguments professionally and with confidence Learning by Doing GDC maintains that programmes based on separate and independent modules or subjects do not teach students how to integrate the various skills needed to be an exceptional designer. 25 DESIGNERS HELP INTERPRET SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MULTIMEDIA DESIGN A HUMAN WAY. THEY ENSURE PEOPLE ARE LIBERATED RATHER THAN ENSLAVED BY TECHNOLOGY William Morris
What is Multimedia Design? Multimedia Design is very much on the cutting edge of technological and industry developments. 44 Whenever someone invents a new kind of digital display, Multimedia Designers have to think about how the public engage with it. Designers working in the field of Multimedia Design use imagery, typography, video, sound and computer-based interactive elements to communicate design messages. Design projects could include the creation of animated logos and identities for television broadcast, the animation of titles for movies, the interface for a new smart phone game or app, or the way a website looks and delivers its information. The field includes basic animation, computer graphics, storyboarding and interfaces for web design and mobile applications as well as design for interactivity. Multimedia Designers are innovative, tech savvy and independently minded. Areas of employment include interactive design consultancies, advertising agencies, marketing and promotion companies, television, film and electronic media houses. Multimedia Design at GDC The BA Multimedia Design degree is a 360 credit point qualification at NQF level 7 (SAQA ID 71672). It can be completed in three years of full time study. The purpose of the programme is to develop students into competent and employable designers that specialise in digital screen-based communication including motion based visual communication systems and interactive design. The programme emphasises the ability to form, create and rationalise both design and theoretical argument, as well as the ability to implement and critique digital design processes, and realise the potential of technology as a tool for communication. The programme further provides a theoretical and practical foundation in digital communication for further study.

THE PURPOSE OF DESIGN IS TO MAKE THINGS BETTERAnonymous BACHELOR OF ARTS HONOURS DEGREE
istd merit AWARD GDC offers three postgraduate programmes: Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Interior Design (SAQA ID 93876) Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Visual Communication (SAQA ID 93628) 52 Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Multimedia Design (SAQA ID 93875) As postgraduate qualifications, the purpose of the programmes is to consolidate and deepen the student s expertise in their design specialisations, to develop research capacity and the application of the discipline s methodologies and techniques in terms of theory and practice. The programme is focussed on preparing students for both academic and design leadership. This is achieved by an emphasis on individuality (where students are encouraged to identify and pursue an area of speciality), independence (where students are encouraged to manage themselves and their work with greater independence and autonomy), and complexity (in that the scope of work requires greater maturity and responsibility as a designer). Graduates are expected to enter the design industries as middleweight designers or continue with a professional or academic Masters degree.
LOERIE AWARD Programme Structure 54 The BA Honours Degree programmes are registered at NQF level 8. They are 120 credit qualifications and can be completed in a minimum of one academic year. Three modules make up the programmes, namely the Minor Design Module, Major Design Module, and Critical Studies Research Paper Module. Students are required to complete all modules in order to complete the qualification. The Major Module is allocated 18 credits and is completed in the first quarter of the year. Where possible in terms of timing and educational value, local and/or international competitions will be set as projects. The aim of the module is to prepare students for the independence and self-directedness of the Major Design Module. The Major Design Module bears 60 credits, and requires students to identify, interrogate, and generate a creative and functional response to a complex design problem. The emphasis is on independence and individuality as students essentially determine their own brief and specialise in their own area of interest. The Critical Studies Module carries 42 credits and aims to foster independent research skills, critical thinking and writing skills. In this module, students produce credible, basic but original research on a topic of their choice. Articulation On completion of the BA Honours Degrees Design, candidates will be eligible to enrol for a MA Degree (general or professional) in the given discipline or cognate field.
DESIGN IN IT S INITIAL DESIGN PLUS PLANNING STAGE IS THINKING ABOUT PROBLEMS, NOT THEIR SOLUTION Arthur N Beevar
58 Currently GDC offers an internal bridging programme, Design Plus, for students who narrowly miss the admission criteria for the BA Degree programmes. The programme caters for students who complete the National Senior Certificate with entry into certificate or diploma programmes. On completion of the Design Plus course, students are eligible to register for the degree programmes at GDC. The Design Plus programme is a not accredited. The purpose of the programme is to lay a foundation in the broad principles and practices of design. The programme offers an introduction to design thinking, the design process, analysis and critique of design solutions, and visual communication methods. It prepares learners to become flexible, problem-solving thinkers outside the boundaries of a single design discipline. The knowledge and skills taught are fundamental to many visual and creative professions, and graduates will be able to transfer these to a variety of design specialisations, including visual communication design, Interior Design, product design and environmental design. Additionally, the programme focuses on learners command of the English language, particularly in academic reading and writing pertinent to visual culture theory.
