2 SMALL BUT BIG GUIDELINES FOR SAVING ENERGY As a user of premises, your every-day actions have a significant impact on energy consumption. The most important energysaving decisions are made between the ears. For example, the share of office equipment and lighting may amount to 60% of the total electricity consumption of the premises. The aim of this guide is to describe smart practices that save energy in every-day life. These are big actions that allow us to improve energy efficiency and to reduce the consumption of electricity, heating and water. Please share these tips with your friends. 3 Keep the temperature of the work spaces moderate, during the heating season C. Please report temperatures that are too high or too low to the janitor or housing manager. Do not let heat escape through open windows or doors. Close the doors to the entrance hall, storage rooms, staircases and other cold spaces behind you. Close the windows when you leave. Leave enough space in front of the radiator (at least 10 cm) in order to let the air circulate freely. Use blinds to help balance the heat load. Closed blinds reduce the heating effect of the sun. Adjust the radiator to a lower setting when it is hot. If you cannot alter the temperature of your work premises, please contact the janitor or housing manager. TEMPERATURE

4 Make use of natural light whenever possible. Do not light empty rooms for no reason. Turn the lights off when: You are the last person to leave the premises, especially in the evening and on weekends. LIGHTING You are in premises that are not being used (e.g. auditoriums, classrooms, conference rooms, storage rooms, toilets). Direct the lighting for your work station appropriately. Make sure the lamps are easily accessible for regular dusting. Sammutathan kiitos! / Turn off, please!

5 COPY MACHINES AND MFPS Avoid unnecessary printing and copying. Aim to distribute information in an electronic form. Use print preview functions with printing programmes to avoid unnecessary print-outs. When you print, observe print settings. Use two-sided and black-and-white printing whenever possible. You can also print two or more pages on the same piece of paper. Check that the power saving settings for the copy machines and printers are appropriate. A workstation free of paper rules!

6 USING COMPUTERS AND PERIPHERALS Do not turn on the device until you are going to use it. Use a laptop instead of a workstation whenever possible. Make sure that the energy saving settings for computers and peripherals are appropriate. Turn off the computer screen whenever you leave the workstation for a coffee break, meeting or any longer period. Turn off the projector and screen in the meeting room when you are not using them. Unplug unused chargers from the sockets. Everyone deserves a break even your computer!

7 Only use as much water as you need. Do not let the water run for no reason. Do not use drinking water for cooling process equipment. The proper use of the double button in toilets has an impact on water consumption. Report a leaking tap or toilet seat immediately to the janitor or the housing manager. WATER CONSUMPTION

8 TIPS FOR THE KITCHEN Make only the necessary amount of coffee. Turn off the coffeemaker immediately when the coffee is ready and pour the coffee into a thermos. If you want cold drinking water, you can keep a pitcher in the fridge instead of letting the water run. Avoid opening the fridge or freezer too often. Check the correct storage temperatures of the cooling equipment (+5 C and -18 C). Make sure you defrost the freezer regularly. Use a dishwasher only when the machine is full and also use the quick programmes. Do not rinse the dishes for no reason. Avoid washing dishes manually under running water.

9 OTHER TIPS Use energy-efficient equipment. Instead of using your own car, you should walk, bike and use public transportation. If you drive to work, keep economical considerations in mind. Choose stairs instead of a lift. Walk or bike on campus whenever possible. Sort waste as appropriate. Step up and get on your bike!

10 AALTO UNIVERSITY PROPERTIES LTD In 2012, the share of electricity, heating and water was more than 50% of the total maintenance costs of Aalto University Properties Ltd s buildings. These costs amounted to EUR 6 million in total. The consumption of electricity alone was 36,653 MWh. Aalto University Properties Ltd has joined the Energy Efficiency Agreement for the Field of Real Estate (TETS programme of measures for commercial real estate). The company has committed to achieve 5,338 MWh in energy savings by This corresponds to 6% of the energy consumption in On 4 November 2010, the university and the company signed the energy saving agreement, which includes guidelines for the joint total consumption target for electricity, and for sharing the profit gained from the savings. Annual electricity consumption targets have been set for the buildings. The common goal of the university and the company is for Aalto University to have the leading sustainable campus in Finland, which is internationally acknowledged for its innovative solutions. In order to develop energy efficiency, the company has launched energy efficiency team operations together with the University Campus and Facility Services. AYY and Aalto IT will also participate in the team operations. The company office at Lämpömiehenkuja 2 A has the Green Office certification. Materials by Motiva and WWF Finland have been used in this guide.
