1 UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS COLLEGE CREDIT BY EXAMINATION College Level Examination Program (CLEP) DANTES Subject Standardized Test Program (DSST) International Baccalaureate (IB) Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) University of Indianapolis Examinations Prepared by: Office of the Registrar University of Indianapolis 1400 East Hanna Avenue Indianapolis, IN Updated July 2013

2 University of Indianapolis Testing Programs The University of Indianapolis offers students a number of opportunities to demonstrate prior learning experience through examination. Three different types of testing programs are available: National testing programs designed for the purpose of awarding credit University tests designed for the purpose of awarding credit University tests designed for the purpose of determining proficiency or placement The School for Adult Learning Office disseminates testing information about these testing programs and administers the on-campus testing programs. The Office of the Registrar, using the prescribed guidelines and the advice of the deans and department chairs, awards credit. General guidelines for the granting of credit by examination at the University of Indianapolis are as follows: 1. National or university examinations may be taken prior to or during enrollment at the University of Indianapolis. 2. Credit that a student has been awarded by examination is recorded on his or her permanent record during his or her initial enrollment (new student) or at the time of testing (currently enrolled student). 3. No letter grade is assigned for credit awarded by examination; therefore, this credit is not used in calculating a student s grade point average. 4. The student pays a proctor fee to the University of Indianapolis to register for a CLEP or DSST exam, and a test administration fee to CLEP or DSST. 5. The student may not take an examination in a subject in which he or she has had a sequential course. 6. Dual credit will not be awarded: The student may not take an examination in a subject in which he or she has already taken the equivalent college-level course and received a passing grade. 7. The student may not take an examination in any subject to remove or replace a letter grade in an equivalent college-level course completed at, or transferred into, the University of Indianapolis. National Testing Programs The five national credit-by-examination programs in which the University of Indianapolis participates are: College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP) Educational Testing Services College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Educational Testing Service Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DSST) International Baccalaureate (IB) Excelsior College Examination (ECE) The faculty sets general guidelines for participation in each of these programs (see above) and the deans and department chairs determine which tests will be accepted and which UIndy courses are equivalent to them. The CLEP and DSST programs are administered through the School for Adult Learning; the Excelsior College Examination is administered at national testing sites; the Advanced Placement Tests & IB exams are administered through high schools. Individual testing programs are described on the next page. Advanced Placement Program. The College Board Advanced Placement Program tests are administered annually at high schools that offer Advanced Placement courses. Scores for these examinations are sent to the University of Indianapolis at the request of the student. Guidelines for awarding of credit are included by subject area beginning on page 3. Further information about AP exams is available through one s high school guidance office. Updated July Page 1
