1 Master's Program in Satellite Technology
2 Introduction to Satellite-Tech The Satellite-Tech Master Program of the Technical University of Madrid (TU Madrid), Spain, is an international Master s Degree designed to develop students into competent and interdisciplinary engineers prepared for future engineering roles in space related industries, government agencies and business management. It has a strong emphasis on both theoretical and applied aspects, including practical hands-on lab sessions held at the most important space centers and companies involved in the master. The TU Madrid Satellite-Tech Master comprises a total of 60 ECTS credits divided into three Formative Modules plus one final Master Project module. It offers a comprehensive and integrated curriculum, conducted in a flexible manner to accommodate individual students needs. The TU Madrid Satellite-Tech Master contains the experience and expertise gained during a decade of teaching graduate studies on satellite communications, remote sensing and satellite navigation at TU Madrid. As a result of this background, our Master s Program has been developed in a multidisciplinary context involving four TU Madrid Faculties and a number of international leading industrial companies located in the region of Madrid, Spain, that are top centers of space activities. Now as ever, it is our commitment and our goal to offer the best education in a practical, useful and challenging manner. All participants in the Master will have the occasion to interact with outstanding instructors and experts from both the Academia and the Industry and Space Organizations, learning from their professional experiences and working together in a current real project. After completion of all courses, students have to develop a Master Project by working in a space related facility from one of the participating companies or by taking part in a task group conducted by one of the most influential senior managers in the space sector, who has directly led a number of key satellite projects, from the first phase to the exploitation phase. In this case, students will work together in a satellite mission analysis and will be involved with the different phases of a typical space project. Another remarkable issue of the Master Program is its modularity, so students interested in getting an accurate specialization on a certain subject may choose to attend any of the courses offered in the Master Formative Modules. Academic credits obtained in this way may later be applied towards the Master degree. On top of that, students who successfully pass the Master Courses and the Master Project will obtain an accredited Master s Degree in Satellite Technology awarded by the Technical University of Madrid. About TU Madrid The TU Madrid is located in the city of Madrid, the capital of Spain and the political and financial center of the country. It is a modern metropolis with a vibrant economic and cultural life, and the prime European hub to Latin America. The region of Madrid receives two thirds of all foreign investment coming into Spain, and it is also the source of two thirds of Spanish investment going abroad. Thanks to those figures, TU Madrid ranks first among Spanish universities in Europe R&D funding, having around 15% of the total number of European Union funded projects such as FP (Framework Program), EUREKA and ESA held in Spain. There are four Schools involved in the organization and running of the Satellite Tech Master s Program, all belonging to the Technical University of Madrid: EUIT de Telecomunicación, ETSI Aeronáuticos, ETSI Topografía, Geodesia y Cartografía and Facultad de Informática. They all will have an active participation in the Master through their own Professors and Lectures. More information about TU Madrid at: Characteristics of the Master s Program Well suited for graduate students working in space related fields All phases of space missions and all services provided are covered Every element in a space system architecture is deeply studied thanks to specialized experts With the participation of the main companies and institutions working in the space sector Structured in a modular manner to facilitate the specialization in a subject and to let the possibility of accumulating credits Classes scheduled during evenings to combine study with other business activities A remarkable on-the-ground, hands-on experience is included with practical sessions in the facilities of the main space companies Master Project carried out at one of the space companies or involved in a task group under the supervision of a senior manager
3 Master s Program Structure First Term Fundamental Courses Courses to match the level of the students, introducing fundamentals in aeronautics, telecommunications and management Second Term Advanced Courses Courses for upgrading skills as well as for catching up with the modern technical knowledge related to space technology Third Term Specialized Courses Courses which are aimed at those who wish to obtain a specialization in some specific field of space technology Forth Term Master Project It consists on a real-world work project carried out by applying a project based learning methodology Master s Program Structure Courses included in the TU Madrid Satellite-Tech Master can be took by following two different modes: the Master Mode and the Continuous Education Mode. The Master Mode requires to pass, at least, 12 ECTS credits of the Fundamental Courses Module, 20 ECTS credits of the Advanced Courses Module, 16 ECTS credits of the Specialized Courses Module, and to do a Final Master Project equivalent to 12 ECTS credits. Continuous Education Mode is designed, instead, as an educative upgrading option for students who have an interest on a particular space-related topic. In this case, students can be enrolled in courses of interest to them if there are available places. Fundamental Courses will take 36 hours each one, including next activities: Lectures: 24 hours (6 days) Hands-on activities or cases of study: 12 hours (3 days) Advanced Courses will take 48 hours each one, including next activities: Lectures: 24 hours (6 days) Lab activities: 16 to 24 hours (4 to 6 days) Hands-on activities: the rest up to 48 hours (0 to 2 days) Specialized Courses will take 48 hours each one, including next activities: Lectures: 24 hours (6 days) Lab activities: 12 to 24 hours (3 to 6 days) Cases of study: the rest up to 48 hours (0 to 3 days)
4 Fundamental Courses (FC) This part of the Master s Program comprises 12 ECTS, which are given during the first term. It consists of four courses, introducing fundamentals on telecommunications, aeronautics and management, selected among five offered. They are planned to match the level of students learning and contribute to better understand advanced and specialized courses that come afterwards. CSFC Communication Systems Topics related to signals and spectra, coding and modulation, basic link engineering and electromagnetic spectrum are included SPFC Signal Processing This course involves digital signal processing applied to navigation receivers as well as radar and image processing ICFC Instrumentation & Control This course introduces field instrumentation and aerospace sensors and how they are modeled and calibrated SSFC Space Science & Engineering This course describes most all of the various scientific topics that are concerned with the study of the space environment SBFC Space Business Management Topics related with economics and business management of space industry, including the operation of services related Advanced Courses (AC) Advanced Courses comprise five compulsory subjects, with credits each, which are given during the second term of the Master. They are related to key elements of space systems, covering the space and ground segments and including a specific treatment of the communication channel in between. Two subjects on orbital mechanics and space project management complete this part. OMAC Orbital Mechanics Topics related to Astrodynamics, with focus on trajectories, perturbations, determination, maneuvers and other matters related SSAC Space Segment It comprises those subsystems on board the space vehicle and the payload included, depending on the mission GSAC Ground Segment It is related to the means and resources to manage and control the mission and to receive and process the data SLAC Space Link It involves link budget analysis, multiple access techniques, data processing, multibeam systems and others topics related SPAC Space Project Management Course intended for all those interested in the operational and management aspects of space projects
