4 AFDA Facts & Figures 2013 The Finnish defence, aerospace and security industry is represented by AFDA, the Association of Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries. AFDA covers almost all the defence related industries in Finland with ca. 100 member companies. A viable and competitive domestic defence industry is seen as a fundamental element of credible national defence in Finland. There are no guarantees of a security of supply without a capable national defence industry. Maintaining and developing domestic integration and maintenance capacities, systems capability know-how and crisis repair expertise is considered essential for national defence. Finnish defence companies have been successful especially in communications solutions, turreted mortar systems, armoured wheeled vehicles CBRN and logistics. The industry know-how is also extended to dual-use products, various sensor solutions and C2. Security solutions and civilian applications are becoming increasingly important. The Finnish companies have great competences within cyber and information systems. AFDA and the domestic industry have close relations with the Finnish Ministry of Defence and Defence Forces. A major part of army and air force maintenance has been outsourced to domestic companies, which act as strategic partners to the Defence Forces. The Finnish space industry has in-depth expertise in certain technologies and is especiallyknown for telecommunications, electronics design for demanding environments and sensor technologies. With a few exceptions, most Finnish defence, aerospace and security companies are privately owned and SMEs. Cumulative turnover in 2012 was approximately 1,28 billion Euros out of which ca. 43 % was exports. Direct employment in 2011 was ca In 2012 it was somewhat lower. The defence market in clearly the most important one, since it accounted for ca 67 % of the turnover of the AFDA membership. Finnish defence, aerospace and security industry s ongoing investment in R&D is very high, average being ca. 15 % of net sales. AFDA members are acknowledged internationally for producing high-quality, premium products with long life-cycle performance. International markets and competitions are vital for Finnish companies. 16 Exote Ltd. Exote is specialized in R&D and production of customized advanced materials for military and industrial customers. Business, Products and Services Exote-Armour is a new metal-ceramic composite capable of stopping multiple high-velocity AP rounds, including those equipped with hard metal cores. Exote is effective against any type of AP round, but most competitive against highly penetrative types, such as the M993 / FFV 7.62x51R or 12.7mm / 14.5mm caliber AP rounds. Exote-Armour is capable of stopping several such AP rounds fired at a small target area. After stopping a shot only the area of impact - marginally larger than the caliber - is damaged, and the remainder of the plate remains protective. Hence, the multi-hit capabilities of Exote-Armour are exceptional in comparison to any other light-weight armour material.
