During the first few days of October, the project participants gathered at the partners meeting in the northern Polish tri-city area of Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot, with OPEC Gdynia hosting the meeting. During their stay, the participants discussed comparisons of energy policy in Poland, Lithuania and Sweden, among other topics of interest. The group also visited some multi-family residential properties and substations in the vicinity, and were given a guided tour of OPEC s newly inaugurated Combined Heat and Power Station (CHP) in Wejhereowo. The Lithuanian energy companies Silute SST and MST Mazeikiai were busy during the autumn gathering data for a technical analysis of their respective facilities. A corresponding technical analysis was carried out in Polish companies MEC Kolobrzeg and OPEC Gdynia during the spring of The data collected was analysed and the results were used to plan a study visit to the region of Blekinge in south-east Sweden in November. A description of the project s study visit to Blekinge can be found below. Optimisation and smart district heating grids were some of the topics for discussion during the study visit to Blekinge. Christian Johansson and Fredrik Wernstedt from NODA Intelligent Systems illustrated how smart controllers can be used proactively in order to compensate for changing weather conditions and fluctuating energy consumption. When we look back on 2012, our conclusion is that cooperation within InnoHeat has come a long way, and that activities are continuing according to plan. 2 A milestone in the project After an intense year of data collection and analysis, InnoHeat is now entering a new phase of the project. A study visit, in which Swedish district heating technology was the focus, was organised in conjunction with workshops and discussions with district heating experts. The Swedish expert panel has many years of experience gained from optimisation and upgrading work in grids and substations, knowledge which the project partners will be able to make good use of. The analyses, which were carried out in conjunction with individual interviews with managers of the respective district heating companies, and discussions with the expert panel, formed the basis for the study visit to Blekinge. Several of the participating district heating companies have already shown interest in the specific solutions presented during the visit. Further discussions regarding funding are scheduled to start during the summer of The recently completed phase of the project taught us that the analysis of district heating plants is complex. There may be a number of factors that determine the reliability of the analysis. InnoHeat has been able to isolate these critical elements in order to develop a method that can be applied by district heating companies regardless of individual technical conditions. This method of analysis will be used in future in the form of a tool for e- courses and in the South Baltic District Heating Association platform.

3 Smart Heat Grids Christian Johansson, CTO NODA Intelligent Systems Christian Johansson, CTO, at NODA Intelligent Systems AB was one of the invited district heating experts in the Blekinge study visit programme. As Guest Writer in this newsletter edition, Christian outlines the NODA business idea about proactive use of control systems to compensate for changing conditions in weather, pricing and energy use. Read the full-length article Study Visit to Blekinge From 20 to 22 November, InnoHeat held the project s first study visit to Blekinge in southeast Sweden. The programme for the study visit was tailored to match the specific needs and areas of interest identified during the technical analysis of the Polish and Lithuanian companies. Visits to farms and buildings were interspersed with discussions and workshops with experts who analysed the companies technical data. The companies have a common interest in efficiency improvements in district heating grids and properties in parallel with a focus on customer dialogue and information, and these topics were all dealt with in the workshop with experts. 4 The first stop on the study visit was Affärsverken s new Combined Heat and Power Plant in Karlskrona, which was recently inaugurated by the Swedish Minister for Information Technology and Energy, Anna-Karin Hatt, in September The Lithuanian participants were particularly interested in the use of biofuels at the Karlskrona facility. To meet the EU s energy and climate targets, known as , a major shift from operating with gas to the use of biomass is being introduced in Lithuania in the coming years. The municipal housing company Karlskronahem was the second destination during the trip. Here, Ulf Kvist, Technical Director at Karlskronahem, spoke of the gradual renewal and modernisation work the company has undertaken in order to increase energy efficiency in its property portfolio. Among other things, Karlskronahem has been installing solar panels on roofs to provide hot water in the Marieberg neighbourhood. Ringö is supplied with heating and hot water from a nearby maritime heating plant. InnoHeat participants also had the opportunity to take a look at the production of Alfa Laval s substations in Ronneby. The group discussed the importance of efficiency measures throughout the heating system from monitoring and commissioning to maintenance, improvement, and optimisation. Read more...
