2 Page 2 Municipality of Gdansk - Children s View of Landmarks in the South Baltic Region To see how Gdansk Crane looks from kids point of view, the municipality has invited five kindergartens of Gdansk to enter its art contest. At the beginning of March 2011 each group of kids will get their Styrofoam model of Gdansk Crane to decorate. The municipality of Gdansk is organizing a contest for children from kindergarten according to the motto May Gdansk Crane be called an Elephant?. Before the kids start working on their models, they will have a chance to meet an author of this project. During the meeting an artist will tell the kids about Gdansk Crane and give them some advices on how to work on the model. Results of kids art work will be shown in an exhibition at the Polish Maritime Museum in Gdansk. A similar contest is also planned in Rostock, Karlskrona and Klaipeda. written by the Municipality Gdansk Regional Tourism Association Vorpommern SeaSide Represented at the 3 rd Tourism Day In the event of the 3rd Tourism Day Vorpommern organized at the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald October 18, 2010 presentations were held under the headline Cultural Tourism in Vorpommern. About 70 participants from municipalities, tourism and cultural institutions jointly discussed the latest trends and opportunities to carry on strengthening the cultural tourism in Vorpommern. Mrs Romy Sommer (animare projectmanagement) presented the EUproject SeaSide as a best-practice example of how maritime cultural tourism projects can be realized with high cross-border impact. Particularly the strong networking idea of the project was highlighted of which all involved actors of tourism and culture - such as destinations and museums - shall benefit for long-term. The Regional Tourism Association Vorpommern as project partner committed itself to promoting Vorpommern as tourism destination to the Scandinavian target market by making use of various marketing activities, such as brochures, flyers and trade shows with special attention to Swedish maritime cultural heritage and to informing about maritime cultural tourism offers. written by Regional Tourism Association Vorpommern

3 Page 3 Maritime Museum Rostock Museum Database to be Launched in Spring 2011 All five museum partners of the SeaSide project are presently working on the realization of the museum database. It is not only aiming at promoting exhibition highlights of the respective museum in order to attract more visitors but also to create a network platform for the maritime museums themselves. Currently, the database is fed with museum highlights. In spring the database will be online accessible on Bureau Hanse Sail - 1 st Journalistic Season Opening in 2011 The Tourism Association of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern and the company Bavaria Tourism Marketing organize the 1 st journalistic season-opening in Germany starting April 29, 2011 and ending May 2, Venue of this event will be the Hanseatic City of Rostock as well as Mecklenburg s Switzerland. This year s objective will be communicating relevant information for the tourism year 2011, representing water tourism between the Baltic Sea and Lake Chiemsee as well as promoting Rostock to the expected 80 participants via competition between North and South Germany. Highlight of this event will be the 2 nd Schooner Race. The traditional schooners JR Tolkien and SANTA BARBARA will compete against one another from April 30, 2011 to May 1, 2011 sailing from Rostock to Gedser. At the same time, this competition will be the official opening of the sailing season in Rostock. The evening is planned for a colourful variety of activities at the Marina Residence Hohe Düne and on board of a Scandlines ferry. Show-cooking with local products from North and South as well as a fruitful tourism talk are completing the Programme. The 1 st journalistic season-opening will be extended by a Castles and Lakes - Rallye in Mecklenburg s Switzerland ending May 2, 2011 as well as a press trip called Bavaria s Nature Holiday Dreams Between Water and Mountains" taking place May 2 4, The 2 nd journalistic season-opening is already being planned. In it will be hosted by Bavaria with participation of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

4 SeaSide Newsletter Page 4 Blekinge County Museum Boatbuilding Workshop in Blekinge Region Blekinge Museum invited the Seaside partners to a workshop on boatbuilding, which took place in connection to the 5th project meeting on October 14, All partners showed great interest to get a closer look into education and maintainance of traditional boatbuilding competence in Sweden. As the Blekinge Museum got most expertise in these issues partners have been invited to a one-day-excursion with boatbuilding in focus. During the day the Litorina Boatbuilding School has been visited, which is part of the so-called folkhögskola. One of the students introduced the school system and the history with education for adults, followed by a conversation with one of the teachers Nils Göransson. The participants also had the opportunity to go around, talk to students and explore the boats. The Naval Museum s workshop for its boats is situated in the same building complex of the school. This building is from the 18 century. So old and even older are many techniques used by the workers in this workshop. The rig master himself, Nisse Gustavsson was met, who guided the participants round the workshop. After lunch the excursion led to the next location Saxemara Boatyard, which is 40 kilometres away from the Litorina Boatbuilding School. This traditional boatyard is owned by the Blekinge Museum but managed by the boatbuilder Sony Olsson, who guided round the workshop participants. Afterwards a traditional Swedish coffee table was organized to have conversations with boatbuilders from Saxemara Boatyard and with a boat expert Bertil Andersson. 5 Page 5 Swedish Naval Museum - 1 Sea 4 Stories Opened in Karlskrona On the cold winter evening of December 15 the exhibition 1Sea - 4Stories opened at the second floor of the Swedish Naval Museum in Karlskrona. About fifty persons attended the opening. During the entrance of the visitors an ensemble of the Swedish Naval Band performed. Moreover, speeches held by Richard Bauer, director of the Naval Museum; Jerzy Litwin, director of the Polish Maritime Museum; Peter Danker- Carstensen, Maritime Museum Rostock; Vaiva Lankeleine, Lithuanian Sea Museum and Ann-Britt Christensson, Naval Museum. Finally the governor of the county Blekinge, Gunvor Engström, declared the exhibition opened. Visitors staying in the exhibition also had the opportunity to try some very special Swedish Christmas tastes. written by the Swedish Naval Museum Evaluation of the Production of 1 Sea - 4 Stories It is very unique to produce a joint exhibition in four different museums of different countries. The museum group, which has been involved in the production, faced a lot of new questions and situations. In such cases it is very valuable to make an evaluation to learn and to see the process all involved museum partners have been through in new ways. That is why the component leader, the Swedish Naval Museum, hired the evaluation expert Per Cederberg. He started to work with the museum group in a workshop during the project meeting in Karlskrona, October After the workshop, he interviewed all persons (except the manufacturer) involved in the production of the travelling exhibition. In total, eight persons were interviewed by Per Cederberg. The evaluation was made as a qualitative and summative study of the production process. The following quotation is the conclusion made by Per Cederberg: Everyone who was interviewed during the evaluation praised the collaboration. It was educational, we met new colleagues, solved problems and it was all conducted in an extremely positive environment. The consensus was that this was a very good way to create a professional network. In addition, everyone is convinced that the contacts and collaboration will continue in some form. If we compare the results against the set objectives, you can say that it was a great success. It resulted in an excellent exhibition, the creation of a professional network and the initiatives of the group can be seen as an exemplary model for the rest of the Seaside project.. written by the Swedish Naval Museum

6 N E W S L E T T E R Page 6 Edition No 1/2011 Upcoming Events Common Travelling Exhibition 1Sea - 4Stories April 15, 2011 final opening at the Lithuanian Sea Museum The common travelling exhibition 1Sea-4Stories will soon be opened at its final location the Lithuanian Sea Museum in Klaipeda, Lithuania. This will be the last chance to step into four (hi-)stories around the South Baltic area at once. Final Project Meeting on Rügen Island May 3-6, 2011 The SeaSide project group will have its final official project meeting on Rügen Island connected to an excursion leading from Rügen to Greifswald. Main topic of this meeting will be on reflecting the project results in accordance to the settled project objectives. European Maritime Day in Gdansk, Poland May 19-20, 2011 Every year the EC announces a European city for the European Maritime Day Conference dedicated to European Maritime Heritage. In 2011, Gdansk has been selected as official venue for the event to be held from 19 to 20 May.
