5 Services you need to succeed PHCC offers a full range of services designed to support success. Career testing, counseling and advising help you plan your career and gain employment. Our Teaching-Learning Centers offer personal tutoring and customized study materials in core subjects including English and math. Each PHCC campus offers a full service library, student development offices and a College Store. Subsidized child care is available and an accredited facility is located on the West Campus. Admissions and Student Records The Office of Admissions and Student Records assists you with PHCC program offerings and requirements. Applications to PHCC are available online. The application asks for personal information, educational background and proof of Florida residency, which is required for in-state tuition discounts. Visit phcc.edu/admissions/ for a PHCC application. Either complete the application online, using our web registration system WISE, or download a PDF to complete and mail to PHCC. Applications must include a non-refundable $25 fee (subject to change). The fee may be paid by mail, at any PHCC College Store or online with Visa or MasterCard. If submitted online, the fee must be paid by credit card on the same day or no information will be retained. Student Development Academic advisors provide current and accurate information regarding college policies, procedures, resources and programs. Advisors work diligently to assist you in setting and achieving your educational and career goals. Teaching-Learning Center (TLC) The Teaching-Learning Center located on each campus is an environment designed for students academic and personal success. 7 Student Activities Throughout the academic year, numerous events and activities provide opportunities to expand knowledge, support personal growth and improve connections to other students, the community and PHCC. The following opportunities are available on all campuses: Student AmBASSADOR PROGRAm. Ambassadors serve as a vital link between the College and prospective students, current students and community visitors. This dynamic group assists in special activities including PHCC College Nights, commencement ceremonies and other PHCC sponsored events. Selection for the Ambassador program takes place over the summer. For more information visit any Student Activities Office. Student GovERNmENT ASSOCIATION (SGA). The purpose of the SGA is to promote active, responsible and cooperative citizenship through participation and self-government. The SGA strives to promote campus events in harmony with student interests by planning and participating in campus events. SGA serves as the official voice of the students at the campus, district and state levels. It provides a foundation for unity and a sense of community, among students and student groups at PHCC. Student ClUBS. PHCC has more than 45 active student clubs. Each of these clubs was formed based on common interests. Most student clubs are primarily active in the fall and spring semesters. PHCC Athletic Programs PHCC has a successful intercollegiate athletic program and is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA). The PHCC Conquistadors compete in the FCCAA Suncoast Conference in five sports: women's volleyball, softball and cross country and men's basketball and baseball. Equal opportunities are provided to women and men. A limited number of athletic scholarships are available for those selected for intercollegiate sports. Prospective students, as well as current students, who are interested in intercollegiate opportunities should contact the athletic director at the West Campus in New Port Richey. Child Care Located on the New Port Richey campus, TodayCare Children s Center provides PHCC students with full-time, part-time and evening, drop-in child care. This state-of-theart facility remains one of the highest quality preschool centers in Pasco County. The center serves infants through 11 years of age. 9 Find the program that's right for you Whether training for immediate entry into the workplace, changing careers or updating your professional skills, PHCC will get you job ready and success bound. PHCC offers a variety of options, some that can be completed in as little as one semester. Many fast-track programs prepare students for high-demand careers within one year. Outlined below are the different types of career degrees and certificate programs offered at PHCC. Each varies in length and purpose. Speak with an academic advisor to determine the right path for your success. Associate in Science Programs The Associate in Science (AS) degree is designed to prepare students for immediate employment in the workforce. Students must earn a minimum of 62 college credit hours, mostly degree-specified courses and related courses. Credits earned for many courses in these programs are acceptable to upper division colleges, should you decide to pursue a four-year degree. Associate in Applied Science Programs The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is a two-year degree that leads to employment in the workforce and is not intended for transfer to a four-year institution. College Credit Certificate Programs Focusing on a specific job or set of skills, these programs require fewer credits than an Associate in Science degree. The credits earned from the certificates will apply to the related AS degree program. They provide quick training to get you into the workforce. Additional courses may be taken to advance career options. Applied Technology Diplomas Applied Technology Diplomas (ATD) offer streamlined training in specific occupations. Courses in these diplomas include professional and technical material, with an emphasis on practical application. PHCC program completers may receive credit for ATD hours toward specific Associate in Science degrees. A high school diploma or GED is required for entry into these programs. Dual Enrollment Program Earn FREE college credit while in high school. Dual Enrollment is designed for academically talented students who want to accelerate their college careers. Dual Enrollment offsets college expenses, shortens the time needed to earn a degree and allows for a reduction in course-load per term when attending college full-time. Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) Ever considered becoming a teacher, but don't have the time for the drastic career move? The EPI provides the opportunity to become a certified teacher in as little as seven months to individuals with a bachelor s degree from regionally-accredited institutions. Gain a solid foundation in classroom management, pedagogy and instructional strategies that will enable you to enter the classroom with the skills and confidence you need to be a successful educator. GED Preparation PHCC is a preparation and testing site for General Educational Development (GED). Complete your high school equivalent diploma in the comfort of a college environment with other adult students and work online at your own pace. Students may also enroll in some of PHCC s technical certificate courses to develop job skills while working toward a GED. Technical Credit Certificate Programs Technical Credit Certificate programs provide focused training in select occupational fields. Students in these programs earn technical credit, which may count as college credit transferable to a university through statewide articulation agreements. Upon successful completion, students are eligible for positions in a specific field, prepared to take the necessary licensing exams for certification, or possibly transfer to a university. 9

Our certificate and associate s degree programs are created to prepare individuals for a career in our world s ever-changing economy or to advance into a baccalaureate degree program. Critical Success Factors The College partners with local businesses to provide internship opportunities for PHCC students. Internships allow students to gain first-hand experience in the workforce, while earning college credit. Many of the business programs at PHCC require that students complete an internship. Business internships are available through the PHCC Career Center and are currently available in the areas of sales, banking, retail, financial services, health care, information services, law, utilities, publishing, government, education, general management and administrative services. Resources Offered on all four campuses, the business programs provide wireless connectivity, computer labs, online course offerings and small class sizes for students. Business Administration with Specialization in Marketing Want excitement and versatility in your work? Industrial Management Technology Industrial production managers coordinate the personnel and the equipment involved in the manufacturing process. This program provides supplemental training for individuals previously or currently employed in an industry. A desire for someone s well-being, often expressed as a toast. Program Diagnostics Objective To provide a quality education to future health care professionals. Our certificate and associate s degree programs prepare individuals for one of the fastest growing areas health care. PHCC programs teach the necessary medical and technical skills while providing the highest quality of patient care. Critical Success Factors As part of their training, health students at PHCC receive extensive clinical experience at PHCC and area facilities under the supervision of experienced instructors. Resources The health programs provide students with hands-on learning experiences in state-of-the-art labs. Patient simulators, which mimic human physiology and respond to medical interventions, allow students to apply classroom knowledge to realistic medical scenarios. PHCC dental labs provide students with the necessary tools to perfect their occupational skills. The facilities include a dental clinic, two X-ray rooms and an equipment sterilization area. The Dental Clinic at PHCC provides inexpensive services to the public including dental cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants for children and deep periodontal scaling. Dental procedures are performed by dental hygiene students under the supervision of a dentist and instructors who are licensed dental hygienists. Emergency medical services, emergency medical technician and paramedic program facilities include an ambulance bay with a mock emergency room, a fully operational ambulance and simulated home environments. Radiography students at PHCC simulate various image-taking techniques at two fully-energized laboratories equipped with digital imaging technology. 18 H E A L T H Dental Assisting You will learn to assist in virtually every dental procedure, process X-rays, set casts of clients mouths, prepare instruments and help keep patients calm. Dental Hygiene As a dental hygienist, you will perform oral cleaning, deep periodontal scaling and other dental procedures once handled only by dentists. The Dental Clinic on the New Port Richey campus provide hands-on experience and patient interaction needed to enter the workforce as a professional hygienist. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic If you like excitement, work well under pressure and enjoy helping others, a career in emergency services may be right for you. At PHCC, you will receive intensive classroom and clinical instruction. Learn to respond quickly and appropriately to victims needs while working as a basic life-support caregiver on ambulances and in hospitals. Health Unit Coordinator A friendly demeanor and strong organizational skills will serve you well as a health unit coordinator. Learn to greet and admit patients, maintain patient charts, transcribe physicians orders, schedule appointments, organize staff schedules and more. Human Services Human Services Assistant Are you dedicated to helping others? In this career field, you will work with social workers, psychologists and other professionals who help families and individuals with problems related to poverty, inadequate housing and illness. PHCC s program incorporates over 200 hours of experience with local community agencies so that you can enter the workforce with confidence. Medical Administrative Assistant Medical Administrative Assistants perform basic clerical and office management duties and often double as examining room assistants checking patient vital signs, assisting physicians with exams and even assisting with minor medical procedures. 18

19 Medical Coder/Biller Learn the coding systems used by insurance companies and health care organizations to process medical billing. Your expertise will make you highly employable. Medical Record Transcribing Health care providers and insurers will depend on you to transcribe patient records efficiently and accurately. This program provides training in medical language, office equipment and procedures and effective communication. These skills along with laboratory training are valued in this high-demand field. Nursing Assistant Longer life expectancies and a large elderly population have increased the demand for nursing assistants. Nursing Assistants perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. These caregivers answer patients basic needs. They deliver messages; serve meals; and help patients to eat, dress and bathe. They also provide skin care to patients, monitor basic vital signs, set up equipment and observe patients physical, mental and emotional conditions. Nursing, (RN) Generic Nursing, (RN) ADN transition from PN or Paramedic From maternity wards to emergency rooms, registered nurses enjoy many options for employment as well as competitive salaries, employer incentives, flexible work schedules and good benefits. Some nursing students at PHCC receive tuition sponsorships from area hospitals. Day, evening and weekend programs are available. Licensed practical nurses and paramedics qualify for accelerated transition programs. Phlebotomy Hospitals, laboratories and other clinical settings require the skills of professional phlebotomists to collect blood samples for analysis. LPNs care for the sick, injured, convalescent and disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. Radiography Focusing on detailed knowledge of human anatomy, the radiography programs will train students in various image-taking techniques. You will learn the proper duration and exposure to X-rays, which minimize harmful risks to patients. PHCC s certificate and associate s degree programs are designed to prepare students for the workforce in local industries or to successfully advance into a baccalaureate degree program. Critical Success Factors PHCC partners with local businesses to provide internship opportunities to students studying computer programming, networking and information technology. Internships allow students to gain first-hand experience in the workforce, while earning college credit. Many of the programming and computer information technology programs at PHCC require an internship. Obtained through the PHCC Career Center, internships are currently available with a wide variety of local employers. PHCC also offers competitive opportunities for students in AutoCAD, drafting and design and geographical information systems. The competitions are designed to showcase students skills to industry professionals. Students also prepare working portfolios which will be needed in a job search. In one, students learn the fundamentals of construction and drafting. This provides the foundation for the intensive technology portion of the program. The second lab, equipped with computer workstations, utilizes the latest industry standard computer-aided drafting software, professional quality printers and a prototype machine that prints design files in full three dimensions (3D)! PHCC s East Campus in Dade City houses a state-of-the-art welding facility where students receive extensive hands-on experience in a variety of welding techniques. 21

22 I N D U S T R Y & T E C H N O L O G Y A+ Certification Preparation A+ Certification prepares students for entry-level competency as a microcomputer service technician. Gain extensive hands-on experience in troubleshooting and repairing microcomputer system hardware and software problems and prepare to pass the CompTIA A+ certification exam. Courses may be taken independently or as a part of the Computer Programming and Analysis, Information Technology Security, Internet Services Technology or Networking Services Technology programs. Cisco Networking Academy Become a Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) or Network Associate (CCNA). This training led to my position as a patrol off icer at the Dade City Police Department and later to my advancement into the Criminal Investigations Division. Action Plan Objective To provide a practical education and training to pursue a career in public service. Proper use of oral and written communication skills is emphasized. PHCC s degrees and certificates challenge students to think critically and to strategize independently and in a team environment. Programs allow students to advance into a baccalaureate degree program. Critical Success Factors The Law Enforcement Officer and Correctional Officer programs provide the required job-related training at the entry level. These programs include classroom instruction and hands-on training in the high liability areas of first aid, driving, firearms and defensive tactics. Upon successful completion of these programs, students are eligible to sit for the applicable Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification Examination. PHCC partners with community agencies to prepare students for employment in a variety of human service fields. PHCC partners with local law firms and government offices to offer internship opportunities to PHCC Paralegal Studies (Legal Assisting) students. Internships allow students to gain firsthand experience in the workforce, while earning college credit. The program requires that students complete an internship. Paralegal internships are available through the Paralegal Program Coordinator at PHCC and are currently available in a broad variety of private, civil and criminal law firms, as well as the County Attorney s Office, State Attorney s Office, the Clerk of the Circuit Court and with the local courts. Resources The state-of-the-art Public Service Technology Building on the East Campus in Dade City has the latest equipment and labs for the criminal justice, law enforcement and corrections programs. In addition to spacious classrooms and a 100-plus seat auditorium, the facility houses mock jail cells, interrogation-style interview rooms, a forensics lab and a courtroom. Academy cadets practice skid recovery maneuvers on an 1,800-square-foot, state-approved driving pad equipped with a police cruiser that simulates high speeds. Simunitions labs are used to replicate building searches and other realistic "shoot don t shoot" scenarios. The facility also includes a firing range for weapons training. PHCC offers paralegal courses at the West Campus in New Port Richey and online. Facilities are equipped with wireless connectivity for students, computer labs and small class sizes. The Paralegal program at PHCC requires that students observe local court proceedings, utilize local law libraries and online research tools, draft a myriad of legal documents, participate in a mock trial and moot court proceedings and complete an internship in a law office. 27 Correctional Officer The Correctional Officer Academy will train you for a career in less than six months. Correctional Officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, reformatory or penitentiary. Cadets at PHCC may have their tuition sponsored by a local law enforcement agency. Students may participate in cross-over training with the Law Enforcement program at PHCC. Criminal Justice Technology The Criminal Justice Technology AAS degree offers a concentrated study of all facets of our criminal justice system, including crime prevention, law enforcement, corrections and correctional probation. This program can be an excellent stepping stone for certified law enforcement and correctional officers, as well as other criminal justice professionals. Human Services Human Services Assistant Are you dedicated to helping others? In this career field you will work with social workers, psychologists and other professionals who help families and individuals with problems related to poverty, inadequate housing and illness. PHCC s program incorporates over 200 hours of experience with local community agencies so you can enter the workforce with experience and confidence. Law Enforcement Officer The Law Enforcement Academy prepares students for a law enforcement career in about six months. Law enforcement officers are relied upon to serve and protect citizens lives and property. They maintain regular patrol and respond to calls for service. 31 Steps to apply FIRST: Apply for Admission Students must submit the application online with a $25 non-refundable fee through PHCC s website, located at phcc.edu/admissions. THEN: Submit Transcripts All degree-seeking students, college credit certificate-seeking students and limited access technical certificate applicants must submit either an official high school transcript confirming graduation or official GED scores indicating the award of a high school equivalency diploma. Official transcripts from each U.S. college or university attended and official scores from external agencies as appropriate (i.e., AP, CLEP, IB, etc.) in order to finalize admission to PHCC are required. Transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions and Student Records, Ridge Road, New Port Richey, FL Official transcripts must arrive in a sealed envelope from each issuing agency or institution. Apply for Federal Financial Aid/Veterans Benefits Students are strongly encouraged to apply for federal financial aid by applying directly online at fafsa.ed.gov. Any application for financial aid should be completed by at least six (6 ) weeks before the deadline date when registration fees are due. Applicants for Title IV Federal Aid (e.g., Pell Grant) must submit either high school transcripts or GED scores indicating successful program completion to the Office of Admissions and Student Records at the West Campus, New Port Richey. Students in eligible technical credit programs must submit high school transcript, GED or, if applicable, appropriate College Placement Test (CPT) scores. Contact one of the PHCC Financial Aid Offices or Veterans Administration advisors for further information. PLEASE NOTE: PHCC s federal school code is Complete College Placement Test (CPT) or Submit Placement Test Scores Students planning to enroll in degree programs and/or college-level English and math courses must submit placement test scores no more than two years old on any of the following exams: ACT, COMPASS, CPT or SAT.
