Style, function, quality and safety are of utmost importance in the manufacturing field. Because of the variety of consumer goods, industrial employees enjoy highly specialized jobs in many product categories. Industrial managers lead a team of employees and manage complex projects, while engineers, designers, welders and other specialists expedite production within their areas of expertise. Products continuously being developed and upgraded include: motor vehicles, appliances, medical equipment, furniture, tools, buildings, roadways, household goods and construction equipment. What you will find in a technology career Technology is an essential component of everyday living and a key operational element in virtually every successful business. Because computers are vital to processing and managing information at home, school and in the business world, opportunities in technical fields continue to expand. Routinely computers require maintenance, protection and repair. 4 What you will find at PHCC Pasco-Hernando Community College offers a variety of industrial and technical programs that range from certificates that can be completed within several months to programs based on two years of full-time coursework. PHCC, a regionally accredited institution, offers general education, technical and industrial coursework to prepare students for direct entry into the workforce. Students who wish to pursue advanced degrees can transfer these courses to a Florida state college or university. Most programs incorporate internships, product management courses and/or hands-on experience needed for employment. In some programs, students are also prepared to take industry standard certification examinations. 7 Computer Programming and Analysis Associate in Science Computer programmers, also known as data analysts, develop, implement and maintain overall system-programming and applications software. The most qualified applicants for programming jobs possess strong analytical skills combined with the patience and creativity needed to design complex, results-oriented programs. Many software programs are sophisticated and abstract. Effective programmers exercise superior problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills. Employers particularly value programmers that communicate clearly and work well within a team environment. Purpose: To prepare students for employment as entry level computer programmers, programmer specialists, senior programmers, chief business programmers, programmer analysts and information systems programmers or to provide supplemental training for those previously or currently employed in these occupations. Students who wish to transfer credits from this program to another institution must accept responsibility for securing approval in advance from that institution. PHCC offers two certificates that can be earned as students work toward the Computer Programming AS degree. Students may earn a Computer Programming Specialist certificate after earning 18 credit hours and a Computer Programmer certificate after 33 credit hours of study. As the certificate hours of study requirements are completed, students need to contact the Admissions and Student Records Office to apply for the certificate(s). 11 Drafting and Design Technology Associate in Science Drafters and designers produce schematic drawings, instrumentation diagrams and create drawings of finished products. While trained to use traditional drafting machines, rules, curves, triangles and other drawing tools, most professionals produce designs using computer aided design software (CAD). Most drafters are expected to create freehand drawings and often incorporate lettering and label information to complete final design projects. Many areas of specialization offer unique opportunities within the field, each with its own collection of skills related to civil, electrical, electronic and mechanical architecture. Successful drafting and design professionals combine computer ability with a proficiency in measurement, critical thinking and communication. Drafters and designers must be able to visually interpret concepts and work with engineers to give form to ideas. Purpose: To prepare individuals for employment in the drafting and design and computer drafting and design fields. This program emphasizes theoretical knowledge required for a variety of drafting positions in building and manufacturing industries. The Associate in Science degree in Drafting and Design Technology includes a certificate in AutoCAD Foundations. Access: This is an open access program. Length: This 62 credit hour program can be completed in approximately two years if students attend classes on a fulltime basis. Location: This program is located on West Campus in New Port Richey. Many of the general education courses in this program can be taken on any PHCC campus. Format: All courses for this degree are offered in a traditional classroom or lab setting. Sixty percent of the courses, mostly general education courses, from this program can be completed online. This program also includes a 120 hour internship course to reinforce classroom and lab training. 9

12 AutoCAD Foundations College Credit Certificate Under the direction of engineers and architects, computer aided design (CAD) operators or drafters prepare drawings for various industries, including the architectural disciplines of civil and mechanical engineering. CAD drafters should be able to draw well and perform detailed work neatly and accurately. Visual aptitude and mechanical ability are essential. Must be able to prepare complex computer-aided design from applications. Purpose: To prepare students to assist architects and construction engineers in planning, designing and detailing. Computer design techniques are emphasized in this program. Upon successful completion of this program, students may transfer into the two-year Associate in Science in Drafting and Design Technology degree. Access: This is an open access program. 15 ebusiness Technology Associate in Science The e-business technology field consists of marketing, sales and other business initiatives conducted via computer-mediated networks. In this quickly expanding profession, technology business professionals perform a variety of duties that require training in both business and technology. A solid understanding of business principles, ambition and the ability to envision the big picture are essential to the successful e-business professional. Additional talent includes strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. Purpose: To prepare students for employment in occupations such as supervisory and management positions manager/supervisor, benefits administrator, customer services manager/supervisor, department manager/supervisor, marketing manager/supervisor, or other mid-management positions in a variety of business environments; especially those that incorporate e-business into day-to-day activities. 16 Geographical Information Systems Technical Credit Certificate In this evolving field, geographic information systems (GIS) technicians integrate, sort and analyze information from various sources, link the data to global positioning systems (GPS) or map coordinates and display the information in map formats. End users rely on this continuously updated information to make educated decisions and implement plans that involve geographical information. Successful GIS technicians demonstrate enthusiasm for adapting to emerging information systems and continuously push technological limits. This profession demands excellent verbal and written communication skills, a passion for problem solving and a solid understanding of math and statistical analysis. Purpose: To prepare students with project-based skill development using the same geospatial tools that GIS technicians in the industry are using. Students will use remote sensing applications and data to develop skills that will allow them to take images and convert them to data to be used for different types of analyses. Analyses will include using data in image analysis, feature extraction, vegetation mapping and change detection and image enhancement. The program ends with a project-based, capstone course challenging students to apply all skills and techniques learned. Length: This 20 technical credit hour program can be completed in one year if students are enrolled full-time. Location: This degree program can be completed on West Campus in New Port Richey. 19 Industrial Management Technology 17 Associate in Science Industrial production managers plan, direct and coordinate the production activities that generate millions of materials and goods annually. These professionals ensure production proceeds smoothly, on time and within budget. Depending on the size of the manufacturing plant, industrial production managers may oversee the entire plant or a single area. These professionals are responsible for quality control, containing costs, increasing productivity and maximizing profits. Interpersonal skills and the ability to compromise, persuade and negotiate are essential. Successful production managers are well-rounded professionals with excellent communication and computer skills. Purpose: This Industrial Management Technology program is designed for articulation from technical certificates issued at Florida technical centers and Florida state colleges. These programs are traditionally referred to as postsecondary adult vocational programs and run on a clock hour basis. Students completing postsecondary adult vocational programs receive technical training needed for employment. This program gives those students the managerial and supervisory training needed for job advancement. Access: To be eligible to articulate into this program, students must have completed a state approved postsecondary adult vocational certificate at a state technical center or Florida state college in a program such as: Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating; Applied Welding Technologies; Automotive Service Technology; Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing Building Construction Technology; Carpentry; Electricity; Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Mechanics; Interior Décor Fabrication; Interior Decorating Services; Manufacturing Technology (Machining); or Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts. Students must arrange to have official transcripts sent to the PHCC Admissions and Student Records Office. Length: This 60 credit hour program can be completed in approximately 18 months if students attend classes on a full-time basis. Location: This program can be completed on East Campus in Dade City, North Campus in Brooksville, and West Campus in New Port Richey. Several courses from this program can be completed on Spring Hill Campus. Format: All courses for this degree are offered in the traditional classroom setting. Approximately 90 percent of the courses from this program are also offered online. Students can articulate 24 or 27 college credits for approved postsecondary adult vocational certificates.

20 Information Technology Security Associate in Science Information technology professionals protect computers and networks from security breaches and system threats including hackers, viruses, spyware, dialers, worms, Trojan horses and other Internet and software risks. A solid understanding of business and management principles along with a strong educational background and experience in a variety of technical fields is needed for a career in IT security. Purpose: To prepare students for employment as information technology security professionals, or to provide supplemental training for individuals previously or currently employed as computer specialists in network security, e-commerce website support, and networking. This program prepares students to work in Internet, intranet, extranet and enterprise environments; installing, configuring, designing and managing secure data and e-commerce resources. Program completers will receive training that will prepare them to take the Network+ and Security+ certification examinations. These exams are not offered on campus. Length: This 63 credit hour program can be completed in approximately two years if students attend classes on a fulltime basis. Location: This degree program can be completed on West Campus in New Port Richey. Format: All courses for this degree are offered in a traditional classroom setting. Webmasters approve and integrate web content, often including complex layers of information combined with visually appealing graphics, photography and design elements. Purpose: To prepare students to enter the workforce as Internet/intranet technicians, web technicians, Internet/intranet administrators, web administrators, Internet/intranet developers, website developers, webmasters, Internet support specialists, Internet managers, web managers, or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these occupations. The content prepares individuals to work in Internet, intranet and extranet environments; installing, configuring, designing and managing Intranet and web-based resources. Program completers will receive training that will prepare them to take the Network+ and A+ certification examination. These exams are not offered on campus. 31 Networking Services Technology Associate in Science Network systems and data communications analysts design, test and evaluate systems including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), the Internet, intranets and other data communications systems. These professionals continually survey current computer sites to determine future network needs and may also monitor and adjust the performance of existing networks. Strong problem-solving and communication skills are essential. Purpose: To prepare students to enter the workforce as networking specialists, network systems technicians, network support specialists and network technicians. Program completers receive training that prepares them for the Certified Cisco Networking Associate (CCNA) and Network+ certification exams. These exams are not offered on campus. 35 Information Technology Technician College Credit Certificate Help-desk technicians respond to telephone and requests from customers or clients seeking assistance with technology and computer issues. Because these frontline technicians directly interact with customers and understand their needs and issues, employers value the technician s feedback and suggestions on products and designs. Most computer support specialists and many other IT professionals begin their careers as information technology technicians. With additional training and education, these professionals can advance their careers in business and technology. These skilled professionals must listen carefully to customers, ask thoughtful questions, translate complex computer jargon into common language and patiently guide customers through multiple problem-solving steps. Purpose: To prepare students for employment as information technology specialists, network control operators, help desk specialists, network technicians, network systems specialists, network support specialists, or microcomputer technicians or to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in these occupations. 36 Applied Welding Technologies Technical Credit Certificate The welding industry offers diverse opportunities for technicians in positions that range from manufacturing to the professional auto racing circuit. Welding techniques implemented are often determined by the types of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding takes place. Highly skilled welders are trained to work with a wide variety of materials, from titanium and aluminum to plastics and steel. Welders select assemble welding equipment, execute planned welds, and evaluate their work to ensure that job specifications and industry standards are met. Welding, soldering and brazing technicians must possess good eyesight, excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. The ability to concentrate for long periods of time and strong math, problem-solving and communication skills are necessary. Dexterity is required in order to bend, stoop and work in awkward positions. In addition, welders increasingly must be willing to receive training and perform tasks required in other production jobs. Purpose: To acquire skills and knowledge necessary for initial employment as welders. Emphasis is placed on care and safe use of welding equipment, tools and materials. 38 Fast facts, figures and findings Computer programming job growth is projected to be faster than the average for all occupations. Job prospects for computers should be good, especially for college graduates with relevant skills and experience. Employment opportunities for drafters and designers should be best for individuals with at least two years of postsecondary training in drafting. Most employers prefer to hire industrial product managers with a college degree. Experience in some aspect of production operations is often required. Job prospects for skilled welders are above average because employers are reporting difficulty finding qualified people.
